Remote Desktop Licenses

I have an Amazon AWS EC2 instance that I installed in 2010 running Windows Server 2008. At that time I purchased 5 RDS CALs to support this server. I recently upgraded this AWS EC2 instance to run Windows Server 2012 R2 and am now receiving this message:

Remote Desktop licensing mode is not configured.

Remote Desktop Services will stop working in 117 days. On the RD Connection Broker Server, use Server Manager to specify the Remote Desktop licensing mode and the license server.

Can I reuse the 5 RDS CALs from 2010 on this newly upgraded server? If so, how do I enter the license information?

RDCManager error on openning console

Hi,

after messing up with profiles on one machine, I get an annoying message when open the rdg file on new Windows 10 machine.

I entered credentials and can access my whole server structure by double clicking on server icon, after closing error message. But it appears every time I open the console.

I don't have any profiles. But the info is stored somehow in the file from previous saving.

How to solve this?

Thx.

RemoteAPP auto login

Hi there,

i'm currently building a environment which gives users access to the RDweb of terminal services.

They can already access it and use it, but they need to enter their credentials everytime, even though they already logged in on the RDweb page. So using the rdp from the RDweb asks Credentials.

Any way to make it remember the credentials after logging in on the webpanel so it will copy it to the RemoteApps?

RemoteFX - Adaptive encoding stack

Hello All,

I am using RDP8.1 [from Windows 8.1 - Dell Thin client - Z90Q8] to connect to Windows 8.1 VM hosted in hyper-V (Windows server 2012) with  NVIDIA Quadro 4000 GPU. Remotefx is enabled on the host VM. UDP and auto network detect is enabled on the client. Followed recommendations in below articles

https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/rds/2012/08/23/remotefx-for-wan-overview-of-intelligent-and-adaptive-transports-in-windows-8-and-windows-server-2012/

https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/rds/2013/10/31/remotefx-h-264-codec-improvements-in-windows-8-1-and-windows-server-2012-r2/

http://microsoftplatform.blogspot.in/2011/03/how-to-enable-and-test-remotefx-on-rdsh.html

The thin client has AMD Radeon 8400 Integrated Graphics card, which is capable of H264 hardware decoding.

While running 3d benchmark tests (https://unigine.com/products/benchmarks/heaven/) and viewing H264 videos through VLC player on the host, in high speed LAN network, I am able to see host side rendering.

The article, https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/rds/2012/08/06/remotefx-adaptive-graphics-in-windows-server-2012-and-windows-8/talks about RemoteFX offloading all image decoding to an AVC/H.264 hardware module on the client side based on network conditions.

When I switch to 1Mbps, 250ms latency, 5% latency network, I don't observe client side decoding. Modifying group policy  to server scalability or network bandwidth didn't have any impact. Event-viewer logs show remotefx is enabled, the RDP connection bar also shows low bandwidth.

Is there any specific criteria for remotefx to switch to client hardware H264 decoding?

Thanks,

User Profile - Windows Search Index resets on User Logoff?

$

We are seeing an issue with the Windows Search Service on WIndows Server 2008 R2, where we use Outlook 2010 and cached mode. The index appears to start and index fine, but when a User logs off the index is removed for that User. WHen that User logs in again the "indexed files" count is back to 0.

How can we prevent this?

I see in a post on Server 2012 using UPD this is "by design", but not sure if this also applies?

2012 R2 Internet Facing RDS, Double Login - Certs?

$

Hi,

I have an RDS Implementation using 2012 R2 with HA Brokers.  4 VM's  The first pair  are each configured as  Web/Brokers(HA), and Gateways. The other two VM's are just App Servers.

I am just in the POC phase, and looking to have a clean login from the Remote App Website which allows an app to start without any additional login.  The Cert for the external FQDN's is applied to all 4 functions,  Web/Broker(single signon and publishing)/Gateway.

I continually get a double login to start an app... One from the Web Site and the other before the app starts.  I am beginning to suspect this is because public cert (applied at all 4 cert levels)  doesn't work for each of the internal RDS Session Hosts. The external FQDN of the brokers/web/gateway's  is apps.domain.com   while the internal AD domain is [servername].corp.domain.com.   I am wondering if I am seeing the double login because of this.

Is this the compelling argument for purchasing a wildcard cert as *.domain.com and will this work when apps.domain.com is the external FQDN and the internal servers are [servername].corp.domain.com?

Arjan Mensch wrote a great 2 part article about advanced RDS deployments, but I am just not entirely sure the wildcard cert is causing the snag I am experiencing. I get that other prompts can appear about trusting the publisher, but the double login is really a big deal.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Server Manager shows BPA error regarding license server

Hi,

I have a server topology existing of two remote desktop servers and one server acting as session broker and license server. Everything seems to be working as expected and have for quite a long while, but the Server Manager reports an error regarding licensing.

It tells me the license server has to be activated before I can install client access licenses for our remote desktop servers.

Here are some images I seem to not be able to insert in the post: http://imgur.com/a/ISsk8

I can't seem to get this error to disappear, because the license server is activated and I can see that the servers are using it as the license server and licenses are assigned to users just this morning. Not all logged in users are showing up as having a license assigned to them though.

The RDS distribution group is set to use this license server, and I have tried to find errors with Event ID 1130 and 1128 in the event log as I have seen these should report missing license server and grace periods, these errors can not be found.

How can I get rid of this error? Is it critical and might become a problem for users to logon suddenly? Everything looks normal to me and have no idea what more to check to resolve this error.

Thanks.

RDS 2012 R2 with 1 GW, 1 CB and 3 session hosts. How is one to rdp into their PC when 3389 is not open at the firewall? We do NOT desire to open that port either. We do use a RDS gateway. When i access RDWeb and click on access a remote computer, the private ip and public ip does not get me to my PC on the LAN. I also tried to use a gateway server in the rd client to no avail. How does one get to their PC when they are external to the LAN?

Counters missing in windows 2012 and 2012 R2

Hi, I have a script which work on few Performance counters of windows 2008. But, after switching to Win 2012/2012 R2,  my scripts are no more working. It seems like few counters available in Win 2008 are no more present in Win 2012/2012R2.

Counters of my interest are -

ObjectName="Terminal Services Session" Counter = "Total Bytes"
ObjectName="Terminal Services Session" Counter = "Total Errors"
ObjectName="Terminal Services Session" Counter = "Total Frames"
ObjectName="Terminal Services Session"  Counter ="Total protocol Cache Hit Ratio"

Any idea, how to fetch these information in 2012/2012R2 ?  Are these counters completely got removed or any other counter is doing the same work?

Account becoming Disabled

On a virtual desktop (Windows 7 Pro) I have several apps running (no services). The account I use is a network (admin) account. I access the account via Cisco VPN. For a long while I been accessing the account and RDP to that desktop without indecent. Ever since I rebooted the desktop due to upgrades, the account will become disabled after about 15 minutes. This happened once before and by creating another account and running the apps on that new account worked for a while. Then the new account started "locking". I moved back to the old account which stayed working for months until the next reboot. Trying to recreate the same procedure to keep the old account from locking again did not work.

What is causing the account to lock? How can I tell what may be causing the account to lock?

Session Broker Drain Mode Problems.

Hi Technet.

I have a small problem with a all 2008 R2 environment.

We have a large farm and a small farm for a selected group of customers.

On the large farm the load balancing works fine. Every servers gets its share of users (about 30-50 each day) and if a server is put into drain mode the current connection get removed and diverted to other servers once they Logoff and Login again.

However on the small farm (only 2 servers) once server TS-01 gets put into Drain Mode (User Logon Mode = Allow reconnections, but prevent new logons) some users still connect to the same server and get a "Server Refused Login" while other users that have previously connected to TS-02 get directed there and are able to connect. Users connect to a NLB DNS name through our Gateway server on both farms with different DNS names.

The farms both use the same Connection Broker at SB-02. SB-02 is located on the root domain along with the large farm but the small farm is located on a child domain. Both farms seem to have identical GPO´s for their settings. Checking the event logs on both the large/small farm give errors at Microsoft/Windows/TerminalServices-SessionBroker-Client/Admin.

The error is a 1280 Remote Desktop Services failed to join the Connection Broker on server SB-02 HRESULT = 0x88150003

Any ideas on what could possibly be the problem?

Performance Counters RPD in what measure-unit?

Hi,

I'm trying to found out how much data traffic is flowing from Remote Desktop Host to client.

I think it should be the counters Remote FX Network: TCP Send Rate and UDP Packets send. Does anyone know in what unit these counters show there value? is it in bits/sec?

And one other thing. I have disabled UDP by GPO, but I still see the counter UDP Packets give a value higher than 0. Is that normal? You should think all traffic would go over TCP when disabling UDP by GPO.

Stuck on signing out screen when connecting into a Server2012R2 machine.

Hi all,

I RDP into this server, it gives me to the company security warning and has me click OK, from there it goes to the signing out screen with the rotating dots and just sits there indefinitely.

If I log into the server using the console on our VM host, after entering my credentials it immediately goes to the singing in dot circle.

I suspect this has something to do with way I may have disconnected from the server with a previous RDP session, the only fix I've found is to have someone else log in and disconnect/log me off.

Any ideas?

We need to set something up as a public demo for any internet user. Maybe limiting it to five, something like a 5 floating license; so the first user (no login or password needed) automatically gets a seat, etc.

Hi all,

I am following this guide, i am wanting to configure RDP with VDI in my home lab.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/canitpro/archive/2013/04/25/step-by-step-deploying-virtual-desktops-with-windows-server-2012.aspx

Is this going to be possible with just one physical server?

I have one Dell T110 with Xeon CPUs, server 2012 r2 and the hyper-v role installed.

I have a feeling i am going to need another physical server?

Any help would be great!

Thanks

Printers disappearing on TS 2012 R2

$

Hi,

I have a RDP environnement (1 broker and 2 TS) all 2012 R2 where ~40 users connects each day. I have a print server that manages ~20printers. The users uses terminal clients to connect to the Terminal Servers and the printers are added by TCP/IP.

Everything works perfectly exept that once in a while, when a user tries to print something (Ex: Pdf or doc) there is no printers in the list. If we go in Control Panel, all the printers are there. If I completly log off and come back, the problem is still present. The only way to get the printers back is to delete them and add them back. They will now show in the applications but only for a few days/weeks. The problem occurs randomly to all users but not a the same time. Today, I had 4 users and yesterday it was 7 but not the same ones.

Additional info:

I have ~20 users on Windows 7 that uses the same printers and the same server and they never had a problem.

When I want to delete the printers, sometimes I can wait 2-5 mins until the printer disappear from the control panel.

It didn't happen often but I aleardy saw a user that had multiple instance of the same printer. For exemple, when I right click on it, I get a menu that ask me to choose between 3 printers of the same name.

Thank you

Help with configuring 2012r2 farm/gateway/web access for external access

$

Hi

I am trying to install a server farm for users at our site. I have followed the documentation, but I am getting errors, and am confusing myself now with what I am trying to achieve.

I have installed/configured the following:-

RDS-CB.somedomain.local - Connection Broker, Web Access and Licensing

RDS-GW.somedomain.local - RD Gateway

RDS-SH-01.somedomain.local/RDS-SH-02.somedomain.local - Session host 1 and 2

Configured an external URL as remote.somedomain.com and forwarded port 443 to the RDS-GW server.

Installed a trusted wildcard certificate for *.somedomain.com on all the servers.

Configured a remote desktop collection and published it on the session hosts.

Created internal DNS for remote.somedomain.com to point to RDS-GW

Created internal DLS for broker.somedomain.com to point to RDS-CB

When I try and connect externally, I do the following:-

Open MSTC

In Computer, I don't know what to put. Do I put in one of the session hosts, the connection broker, or something else?

I chose show options, Advanced, settings and then put remote.somedomain.com in the server name.

If I put in one of the session hosts, for the computer, then after putting in my credentials, I eventually get a certificate warning that says RDS-SH-01.somedomain.local is not from a trusted authority.

Can anyone help me to complete the configuration. Do I need round robin DNS and use that alias for the connection host? Whats the connection broker for if I have to use round robin DNS? Doesn’t it allocate the sessions to the hosts?

How do I stop the somedomain.local being used from the session hosts?

Is there an easier way to give users access to the terminal servers from outside? What I was imagining was that they would log on to the RDWeb site and somehow they would automatically be proxied through the gateway. Is that possible? I only have one external IP address available to me.

Sorry about my confusion/misunderstanding and thanks in advance
