Remote desktop by name and IP

$

When I built a server I can not remote desktop to it by name.  I can remote to it by IP address.  It has a static IP address.

When I put the server on DHCP, I can access it by name or IP address.

When I put a static IP address on the server, I can only access it by IP address.  The name does not work.

When the server was on DHCP, I copied all the DNS info and configured the server with the static IP address with that information.

Any idea what's going on?

Do I need an entry in the hosts file?  The IP address is 192.168.102.96

The server name is studentfp

The full name of the server is  studentfp.student.onboces.org.

How would I address this in the hosts file.

Thanks

Hello! Having a problem with an application which I starting as a Remote App. It works OK, it has a nice look like you are starting this program from you own PC BUT...Actually it doesn't shows the windows which are dependent on the other windows and you'll have to push the icon of this RemoteApp to force this window to appear. Any suggestions? I am having no idea why it happens.

Here are the articles about the same issue which I am downloading thought I can't download hotfixes because they are not available.

Unable to access RDP session of a host in a Windows 2012 RDS farm.

We have a Windows 2012 RDS farm that contains 3 RDS hosts.  When I try to access a published app as a domain user, I am getting an error "The user was denied access".

When I try to RDP to a farm host as a domain user, I am getting "The requested session access is denied".

I have already made sure the local Remote Desktop User Group includes mydomain\domain users.

Please advise where I should look at.

Thanks,

Remote Desktop group automatically resets every day

Every day the local group - Remote Desktop Users - is reset.  Initially I thought it was a Windows update that had reset it once off, but it's happening every day.  Is there any way I can configure the group to no longer be reset?

Thanks for any help.

Shotcuts / GPP?

Hey

I am preparing a new RDSH environment (Windows 2016)

In our production environment we use RES One (Workspace Manager) to manage/assign shortcuts based on group membership

RES One is very expensive (for only assigning shortcuts – and a few settings)

We consider using Group Policy Preferences but have one issue.

For example:

We assign (“item level targeting” – by group member ship) a shortcut to “ApplicationA Ver 1.0” under programs (“ApplicationA Ver 1.0” – destination: C:\AppA\1.0\App.exe)

Now the user copies the shortcut to his desktop. (Or whatever location - unmanaged)

Now a new version of “ApplicationA Ver 2.0” is installed (new destination C:\AppA\2.0\App.exe)

The “managed” shortcut can be updated using Group Policy Preferences – but how do I handle the “unmanaged” shortcut? (RES handles this issue – using an “application-starter”)

Any ideas how to handle this?

Server 2012: Remote Desktop + RemoteApp = No GPP Mapped Drives for 2nd Session

Setting up and testing a new 2012 Remote Desktop/RemoteApp server.

We have Group Policy Preferences mapping drives (S for Shared, U for User).  Also have logging turned on for GPP Drives.

Possibly relevant Group Policy settings:

  • Computer/Policies/Administrative Templates/System/Logon/Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon: Enabled
  • Computer/Policies/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services/Remote Desktop Session Host/Connections/Restrict Remote Desktop Services users to a single Remote Desktop Services session: I've tried 'Not Configured' (2008+ should restrict to a single session by default right?) and 'Enabled' without change of behavior

Scenario 1:  When I log in with a full Remote Desktop I get my mapped drives.  If I leave this session either Active or Disconnected and open a published RemoteApp (WordPad for example) I get a 2nd session (viewed from the CONNECTIONS list from Server Manager) but no mapped drives (File/Open in WordPad does not show mapped drives.

Scenario 2: (From no Active/Disconnected sessions) - When I do the opposite - open up RemoteApp WordPad I get the mapped drives.  If I leave this session Active or Disconnected and open a full Remote Desktop I get a 2nd session again and no mapped drives.  The full Remote Desktop login window went by really fast here - I usually see "Applying Drive Maps...", etc... but I didn't see it here - either it didn't process it or it went by so fast I couldn't see.

GPP Mapped Drive logs are not updating on the 2nd session created (looks like GPP Mapped Drives are not getting called)

I run these tests on a 2008r2 RD/RemoteApp server and I get the mapped drives in the 2nd session in both scenarios above.  GPP Mapped Drive logs still do not update on the 2nd session (so I assume this is by design).

I'm assuming it shares session settings for drive maps in 2008r2 but not in 2012 (? from what I can see how in 2008r2 the 2nd session does not update the GPP Mapped Drive logs).

How can I get GPP Mapped Drives to show up in Remote Desktop AND RemoteApps?

Thanks

-Andrew

Confirmation of client requirements for Aero in W2K8 RDS

Hi,

Apologies if this has been answered previously, I did attempt a search but perhaps my search terms were inadequate to find the correct information?

We have Windows Server 2008 (not R2) running RDS.  We now require Aero to be enabled to support a LoB application feature.  I've deduced that the basic graphics card in the server will need to be upgraded and have been looking at a Quadro K1200 card with 4GB RAM - we're supporting 10 simultaneous RDS clients at present so I'm hoping this will be sufficient.

I also need clarification on the following client related questions:

1. Will Windows XP clients using RDP run the Aero interface in the server session?  I believe not, irrespective of HW/SW.

2. Will Windows 7 clients using RDP run the Aero interface in the server session? I believe they will, without any additional HW/SW requirements.

2. There are a few Wyse V10LE (Thinos) thin clients attaching to the server as well.  Will these devices support an Aero enabled session on the server?

Thanks in advance

Paul

Hello,

Lately we have an issue with one of the backup server(Windows 2008 R2) which is not responding when user try to logoff using RDP. When user initiates logoff from RDP it shows message "Please wait for the Remote Desktop Configuration" and does not respond after that and user will not be able to login. Did any of you face same issue before?

Please let me know how to get this fixed.

Thank You,

Server 2012 RDS - User Profile Disks - Errors during Logoff

$

I have set up a test Server 2012 RDS collection (Single Server for now) and implemented User Profile disks.

I have two problems.

First: My generic test user can connect and does successfully use the user profile disk as expected. However, atlogoff, the system event log contains these errors:

The error (NTFS 137) is: The default transaction resource manager on volume C:\Users\ts3.test encountered a non-retryable error and could not start.  The data contains the error code.

The warning (NTFS 50) that concerns me is:

It appears that the user profile disk is being "disabled" or "disconnected" before the profile data is completely written at logoff. What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Second:

Update: A post from Mike Connor on the following page: -LINK- solved the problem described below.

My administrative user always logs on now with a temporary profile. At the beginning, the UPD was working and mounting. That stopped working. In attempting to troubleshoot, I logged the admin user off and deleted the UPD disk file from the share. I remember it working again after generating a new UPD disk file in the share. Soon, it quit working again. I deleted the UPD disk file again from the share and ever since, it has never regenerated a new UPD andalways logs on with a temporary profile.

Server 2008 R2 Remote App Web Access suddenly apps are gone

I was using Remote apps just fine through RD Web Access and suddenly when i log on to the RD Web Access site there are no longer any apps listed.
When i go into the Remote apps management, all the apps are still there and available for Web Access.
If i use a remote app rdp file, it still works as well. So basically everything is still working except the population of the remote app we part.

this is a standalone TS server, gateway, session host, remote app server all in one install

When i go in the configuration site, i make sure its the correct fqdn or shortname tried both of this standalone server and it gives me the error, place the server in TS Computers.

The server is in that group and i made sure all the correct Com+ and wmi permissons are set as per the technet article...still gives me event id 8 and still apps arent showing.

im out of ideas

RDP to W12r2 results in black screen and then disconnect - Windows Internal Database?

$

Trying to make a Remote Desktop Connection from a W7 pc to a W12r2 Server on the LAN and same domain. Using the administrator credentials for the W12r2 Server , connection is made but I get a black screen for about 5 seconds and then the connection goes away.

I see in the Event Viewer on the W12r2 Server an error message Event ID 4005 , Login process has unexpectedly terminated. I also see an error from Service Control Manager but it is quite confusing:

The Remote Desktop Connection Broker Service depends on the Windows Internal Database service which failed to start because of the following error:  The Operation completed successfully.

Umm, what?  Any help greatly appreciated.

Certificate and Remote Desktop Deployment.

I am setting up a Windows 2012 RDS "Farm" to present the published app from multiple RDS hosts for a group of users.

Question, do I need to configure certificates  on "RD Connection Broker - Enable SSO" and "RD Connection Broker - Publishing" for my deployment?  If yes, may someone suggest a good article of explaining why and the step by step of setting that up?

Do I just go to any web server and create some sort of wild card cert, put it to a network share and configure "RD Connection Broker - Enable SSO" and "RD Connection Broker - Publishing"?

Please advise.

2012 R2 RDS Temporary Profile issue

$

I have set up a standard 3 node 2012 R2 RDS for testing. All virtualized on VMware ESXi 5.0. I have a connection Broker, session host, and web access server. I have published several applications and I can access them without a problem. Here is my issue:

When I try to log on to my session host server either locally or thru RDP, I am always logged in with a Temporary profile. It does not mater what user account I use. Even logging on locally as the administrator I get a temporary profile.

All windows updates are installed and current.

I have removed the server from the domain, deleted the account, and rejoined it to the domain.

I have deleted all .bak registry entries from here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

There is a hotfix here for a similar issue on 2012 but it does not apply to 2012 R2

The only event viewer errors are:

1515 (Windows has backed up this user profile. Windows will automatically try to use the backup profile the next time this user logs on.)

1511 (Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.)

Any suggestions to resolve would be greatly appreciated.

What could be the issue? Cert? RD Gateway?

Hi,

Recently there is a weird issue.

1. The Connection Status does not show the domain\user that is connected to the VM. Usually it shows which user is connected.

2. Then from RDWeb, user encountered unable to connect to the VM with error below.

3. Could this be Cert issue? or RD Gateway issue? I checked RD Gateway services are running.

Windows 2012 R2 RDS - Remote Gateway Manager is temporarily unavailable

$

Hi,

I have a question about my current setup:

1 - Gateway and Web access server (serverA)
1 - Connection Broker and License server (serverB)
1 - Session host server (serverC)

When I open a browser to access the web access url, there is a prompt for me to login. Once I login I see my published apps, however when i click on one of the published apps, another Remote App prompt pops up and asks for me to login to ServerB. I try to login but it says my "Remote Gateway Manager is temporarily unavailable".

I have opened up port 443 to my serverA and applied the SSL certificate I purchased externally to all the server machines.

What am I doing wrong? Why is it prompting me to login to ServerB?

Thanks,
John

User profile on RDS Farm Server is not showing correctly.

I follow this link to setup my Windows 2012 RDS farm - https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/tommypatterson/2014/02/19/step-by-step-lab-guide-for-building-a-windows-server-2012-r2-remote-desktop-services-environment/

I login as domain administrator on one of the host, I open up cmd prompt and see the default directory is "c:\users\temp".  While on another farm host, I see "c:\users\administrator.mydomain" which seems normal to me.

Where should I check?

Thanks.

Is there to grant a standard user privilege to view the running processes of other users in Task Manager (Server 2012 R2 Terminal Servers)

$

Hi Everyone,

I'm one of the help desk guys in our company and we're trying to figure out how we can give a standard user to view the process of other users via task manager. We're using Windows Server 2012 R2 Terminal Hosts. Reason why we need this is because we've been getting very high CPU usage from some users in the terminal servers and it slows down everyone. We'd like to grant some members of the help desk team access to view the processes without giving them admin accounts to the server. With this, the team can analyze what process consumes the most CPU.

Thanks is advance.

Group Policy not applying on Windows 2012 r2 RDS servers

$

Hi

Hopefully someone can help me on this. I have created a series of group policy objects linked into an OU and I have created a security group with certain users in so this group policy only applies to them. How ever when I log in as one of those users the group policy does not apply. If I run a GPRESULT /R I can not even see that group policy listed.

We have the following servers in place at the minute:

2 Windows 2008 r2 domain controllers (These are being replaced by the 2012 servers with a whole new set of GPOS)

3 2008 TS servers (These are being replaced by the 2012 servers with a whole new set of GPOS)

1 2012 r2 domain controller

3 Windows Server 2012 r2 TS servers
