Hi
I have some confusion related to accessing a Windows Server 2012 (or Windows 2008R2) remotely. Following are my queries:
- When we access full Windows Desktop on a Windows 2012 using RDS from our desktop, do we need a separate RDS CAL (User/Device based) for that? Isn’t that included with the Windows CAL itself?
Note: We‘re not publishing any application using RDS. Just simple RDP session is what we need.
- As far as I understand (Please correct me) till the time we are just using 2 RD sessions to access full Windows Desktop on a Windows 2012, we don’t need any other CAL except the one that is available with Windows CAL. Remote Desktop supports two concurrent connections to remotely administer a computer. We do not need a license server for these connections.

- Do we need to install a Remote Desktop license server to install, issue, and track the availability of RDS CALs.
4. In case the Windows 2012 system that we’re accessing remotely using RDS is a VMWare Virtual Machine, does the licensing changes in any way? Do we need a Windows VDA license then?
