RDS 2012 R2 - NLB RDCBs and HA

$

Current setup:

RDCB, RDWB and RDLC roles on same server.  x 2 servers.  These are load balanced using MS NLB.  Lets call these CF01 and CF02.  External cert deployed to all servers, DNS Round robin name: remoteapp.mydomain.com which points to the NLB of both these servers.

1. Are Active Remote Desktop management server and Active Collection Broker the same? Or are these different entities? I think the same? https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj215479.aspx

I note in RDS Server Manager > Overview > Deployment Overview the drop down to change the active Connection Broker. However this displays the machine names either CF01 or CF02.

During HA testing (set Active Broker to CF01) disable NIC on CF01, new and previous clients can still access apps via RDWB fine with no interruption :-)  So CF02 must be being accesed via the NLB at remoteapp.mydomain.com

The RDS Server Manager can't find the alternative Collection Broker for around 3 minutes, Get-RDLicenseConfiguration will also show a change in ActiveManagementServer and returns the second broker after this approx 3 minutes. Update - not true, after checking fail-over from CF01 to CF02 this appeared true but CF02 to CF01 not - weird! Get-RDConnectionBrokerHighAvailability : The active Remote Desktop management server is not reachable.

Clients appear completely unaffected by this outage and RDS Server Manager facilities are available too (after 3 minutes), on the surface all good.

Get-RDConnectionBrokerHighAvailability returns:

ActiveManagementServer   : CF02.mydomain.com
ConnectionBroker         : {CF01, CF02}
ClientAccessName         : REMOTEAPP.mydomain.com
DatabaseConnectionString : DRIVER=SQL Server Native Client
                           11.0;SERVER=DB01;Trusted_Connection=Yes;APP=Remote Desktop Services Connection
                           Broker;Database=RemoteApp
DatabaseFilePath         : E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\RAPP\RemoteApp.mdf

2.  But for this HA environment, should the Broker HA settings be set as follows?

Set-RDConnectionBrokerHighAvailability -ConnectionBroker "remoteapp.mydomain.com"

Confused as to why HA works without 2. being set above!

Any pointers welcomed

Local drive not mapping on Mac/Apple products

Hello all,

My organization was able to implement RemoteApp with what we thought was no issues. One issue has popped-up with our mac/apple product users using the Microsoft Remote Desktop app. The issue being that the local drive does is not mapping in their sessions as a network drive as it normally should. Is this currently working for any of you?? Any advice?

RDS Access Policy Error after changed published FQDN

Have to build an easy RDS 2012 R2 Farm:

- 1 Session Host

- 1 Connection Broker, combined with the RDS Web Site Role

- 1 RDS GW in the DMZ

The Setup was easy, and it works very fast, but with a lot of annoying prompts for the user (certificate mismatch, two logon prompts...).

But what a pain it is to make the farm work right! The best artcle we found is http://www.rdsgurus.com/ssl-certificates/windows-2012-r2-how-to-create-a-mostly-seamless-logon-experience-for-your-remote-desktop-services-environment/. Microft obviousely forgot to write any documentation about 2012 RDS. There is nearly nothing in Technet and MS Library. The only thing available from Microsoft are some Wiki articles.

From what I have read, public certificates have to be used on all systems except on the session hosts, and the "internal names" have to changed to external names.

We tryed to change the published FQDN Name with the powershell command Set-RDClientAccessName, but this command does not work when there is only one Session Broker server installed. For this purpose, we found another PS Script from Microsoft on https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Change-published-FQDN-for-2a029b80. This script worked and the FQDN name is changed, but the connection from the client to the RDS farm doesn't work at all anymore: We are getting an error message that access is denied due to "authorization policies". We have never modified the default client and ressource access policies on the RD Gateway.

Thank you in advance for any advice regarding these problems.

I need solution for small remote group of  users that was on the same Lan( Windows 2008 r2 DC) and they accessed SQL database via lunching sql client app installed on local Windows 7/8 pro PC., but they been moved to other building and they lost (do have access to local lan any more) only via Wan.

TS server is available based on Windows 2008 with old Windows 2003 TS licenses)

How i can allow then to access ?

I know about "citrix publish app" access what is perfect, but Citrix option is too old and not updated.

Is Windows 2008 RDP is a option , but not to the SQL 2008 server desktop, only as "like publish app"

Uninstall RDS Web Access role

We have a client with a server running RDS as a session host. It also has the other necessary roles, RD Web Access, RD Licensing, and RD Session Broker. They also installed XAMP on this server which they use to host an internal company web portal. Apache binds all interfaces on port 80, which causes IIS to throw an error that it can't bind the port.

Unfortunately we can't talk this client into moving the XAMP server, but we'd like to make this error go away. So what are the repurcussions of us disabling the site in IIS or removing the Web Access role altogether? Will the broker and session host continue to operate without the web access role?

Where is my Reconnect to Work Resorces button on Win7?

Hi!

Recently we set up a little RDS2012R2 farm with few session hosts and one broker. On my win10 and some of win7 machines we can see option Reconnect to Work Resources in system tray RDS icon, but on most of our machines this option is missing. It is critical option for our users, we need provide the ability to restore all running remote applications on the users desktops with one click.

Please, point me to a right direction, i have no idea why on some machines option is present and why is not on others.

Windows 2012 RDP Gateway licensing

Hello,

We are thinking about implementing a rdp gateway using Windows Server 2012.  As I understand it, we need the appropriate amount of CALs for each user or user device.  However, I am wondering how this works in terms of the counts being applied to each user.  Does each user that accesses the gateway get tied to the license, so that once the 11th user hits (with a 10-user CAL) that user gets rejected?  If so, how do you "unassociate" the user from the CAL in event that user leaves the organization?  Ditto for the device I guess, if that user's device gets refreshed or lost/stolen, do you have to disassociate it in some manner?

Hide "Details" under RemoteApp Starting Screen

Hello,

Is there any way I can disable "Show Details" part of RemoteApp Starting?? I don't want to give users option to click on "Show Details" and actually see they are being logged on to some server, I prefer less clicks/curiosity.

Please let me know.

Thanks,

Options for redundant terminal servers

We recently spun up 2 new terminal servers running server 2012.  We want to install the RDS CALs in such a way that if one is offline it won't affect the other.  I would have set up the DC as the license server, but the DC is running 2008 R2 and a quick search tells me that while 2012 CALs can be installed on 2008 R2 it downgrades them so they wouldn't work with 2012 RDS.  Is there a way to share the CALs between both terminal servers so that if one goes down the CALs are still available to the other?

Access is Denied - Remote Desktop

I have set up my Server (2008 R2 Foundation) for remote desktop and RemoteApp as per the instructions provided by Microsoft.  I am using a single server for all functions.  When a user logs in to the Server through remote desktop, the remote desktop screen comes up and then the user immediately gets an 'Access is Denied' message.  If the user connects through RDWeb, the RemoteApps are displayed, but when the user clicks on an application, they are prompted again for their login credentials and then they get the remote desktop screen with an 'Access is Denied' screen as well.  This happens even for Administrators.

I am getting very frustrated with this as I have read many blogs and tried everything to no avail.  PLEASE help me.

Connection to remote desktop/apps failing via RDWeb

Hi,

2012 R2.

I have connection broker, gateway and web access on same box.  A collection has been create with access to two session hosts.  The rdp connection is presented in RDWeb.  When clicking on this it attempts to connect but immediately fails.  If I manually create an RDP session to one of the session hosts in the collection and specify the gateway server it works correctly.

Error wise all I see on the CB is:

TerminalServices-SessionBroker-Client

Remote Desktop Connection Broker Client received request for redirection.
User : xxxx
RDP Client Version : 5

Remote Desktop Connection Broker Client failed while getting redirection packet from Connection Broker.
User : xxxx
Error: Element not found.

Remote Desktop Connection Broker Client failed to redirect the user xxxx
Error: NULL

under TerminalServer-SessionBroker

RD Connection Broker failed to process the connection request for user xxxx
Error: Element not found.

So this all looks like a connection broker issue but I cannot see any more clues as to what is causing it...

On the session host the following is logged:

Remote Desktop Connection Broker Client failed while getting redirection packet from Connection Broker.
User : xxxx
Error: Remote Desktop Connection Broker is not ready for RPC communication.

there is a firewall between the CB and the session hosts so perhaps a required rule is missing?

Any ideas?

Thanks

server 2012 R2 Start Screen Layout GPO not updating

We have a Citrix xendesktop using 2012 R2 shared desktops.   I was able to use the GPO setting to specify a start screen layout file.   However, once that was done, it is not letting me update the start screen.   I created a new xml file and pointed the GPO to the new file, but when the users log in, their start screen does not change.

I am not sure what I am missing.

Thanks

RD Session Broker - allow a specific user to override redirection or redirect to specific server in the servers farm

Steps to remove RD Gateway?

$

We have major issues with our Server 2012 RDS farm. We have had a case open with Microsoft Support for months and they cannot resolve the issues.

We have the Remote Desktop Gateway role configured, but I don't think it is needed. All users connect to the RD Collection by name "RDS" - via LAN or VPN.

We are trying to simplify our configuration and eliminate possible cause of all the issues.

What are the steps to remove the Remote Desktop Gateway from our environment and still have everything operate correctly?

Here are the Servers and Roles:

TS01 = RD Session Host

TS03 = RD Session Host, Gateway, Connection Broker and Web Access (currently not allowing Session Host connections)

TS04 = RD Session Host

TS05 = RD Session Host

App01 = RD Licensing Host

FS01 = UPD Shares

Connection Broker and servers pool

Can you direct me to a possible solution to make a 2012 pool of servers?
We have 20 identical 2012 servers that my students use in class.
I will like to assign them from a Pool and not on on one basis.
(we cannot use win7, 8 , or 10. Only 2012 for education purposes)

Server 2012 RDS - User Profile Disks - Errors during Logoff

$

I have set up a test Server 2012 RDS collection (Single Server for now) and implemented User Profile disks.

I have two problems.

First: My generic test user can connect and does successfully use the user profile disk as expected. However, atlogoff, the system event log contains these errors:

The error (NTFS 137) is: The default transaction resource manager on volume C:\Users\ts3.test encountered a non-retryable error and could not start.  The data contains the error code.

The warning (NTFS 50) that concerns me is:

It appears that the user profile disk is being "disabled" or "disconnected" before the profile data is completely written at logoff. What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Second:

Update: A post from Mike Connor on the following page: -LINK- solved the problem described below.

My administrative user always logs on now with a temporary profile. At the beginning, the UPD was working and mounting. That stopped working. In attempting to troubleshoot, I logged the admin user off and deleted the UPD disk file from the share. I remember it working again after generating a new UPD disk file in the share. Soon, it quit working again. I deleted the UPD disk file again from the share and ever since, it has never regenerated a new UPD andalways logs on with a temporary profile.

Win2008R2 SP1 Application crashes when enumerating DLL functions via tlbinf32.dll

Hi,

I need to investigate some IT environmental problems in our Terminal server environment. We ourself don't manage this, it's a contractor that deals with all of the IT stuff. It must be some influence from GPO or virus scanner etc, becasue the problem occurs also on a clean VM they made for testing purposes. Because that new VM still follows the rules of the managed environment I think this is a systematic problem and not a coding error - if I install Windows 2008R2 on my own test machine I don't see this problem.

The problem itself:

in our "managed" productional environment we have an application we develop by ourself. The application has a Richtext editor that can help VB scripting by reading out the "public" functions from two DLL they come with  our applicaiton. The readout is done with the Tlbinf32.dll which is part of the operating system. By doing this the application crashes.

In an "unmanaged" test environment the problem doesn't occur, debugview and process monitor just stop, but don't show any particularities or even errors.

Remote-App lost focus / Screen/Window jumping

$

Hi everybody,

we have a new Terminal Server with Remote-Apps and a very interesting problem.

Host: ESXi 5.5

Guest: Windows Server 2012 R2

Remoteapp: CAS (not importend, all Remote-Apps have the problem)

Client-OS: Win7 and Win 8.1

Now the problem:

A Remote-App is started on a client - this works fine. The Remote-App opens a lot of windows (new mail, customer informations and so on) and it happens that the active windows lost the focus and jumps into the background and another windows is in front with the focus.

The problem is not reproducible and with this caution it is not possible to work with the Remote-App.

I found following hotfix (http://support.micro...b/2964832/en-us) but it is not applicable to the clients.

If somebody needs additional information, i will be available.

Thanks for your help and time!

Kind regards

RemoteApp Login Without domain or UPN

$

Hello,

We're building and RDS environment and are running into a use issue we don't like.  We're going to serve RemoteApps strictly from the Web interface.  We have the login working without requiring the domain to web but can't seem to get the RDP login to work without requiring the domain.

I've tried to set the customRDP settings but they never make it to the RDP file that is downloaded.

Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration -CustomRdpProperty "use multimon:i:0`nusername:s:DOMAIN\"

I've also added to the RDS HA Database and tried the domain custom property as well.  Nothing seems to work.

I followed these directions for the web, and they worked great: msfreaks.wordpress.com/2014/07/22/properly-removing-the-domain-prefix-requirement-from-rd-web-access-2012-r2/

Does anyone know if it's possible to get this to work?
