Using RDS 2012 with 2008 R2 session brokers/Terminal Server Computers

$

We are trying to migrate our Terminal Services to a Windows server 2012, but keep our Server 2008 Session Brokers and Terminal Servers. Is this possible?

Our original configure for Terminal services was simply

2008 R2 Server had installed the RDS Licensing and Connection Broker roles

On this server we simply added the our servers to the respective Session Broker Computers and Terminal Server Computers groups in the Local Groups on this server. And activated licensing.

On the 2012 server is was an easy setup, but I do not see where to add the 2008 session broker and terminal servers. I finally got them to show in the objects wizard, but it said that the RDS had to be on a 2012 or greater OS.

How can I get this to work?

Allow only connections through RDWeb servers from outside

Hi All,

for a proof of concept i would like to Build an RDS Farm 2012 R2 that is accessible from the outside. But only when logging in on the RDSWeb. So to get access outside i installed a RD Gateway. But now it is possible to login through servers behind the gateway without loggin in to the RDWeb. Is it possible to disable this?.

Thanks in advance

RDS Login minimum time restriction?

I know about Remote Desktop Session time limits for disconnected and idle sessions etc.

Is there a way to set a minimum time for users to log back in?

We just had an issue where a user logged out, then logged right back in. Their User Profile Disk did not have enough time to un-mount and the user got logged into a different Session Host with a temporary profile.

This is on a Server 2012 Standard RDS Farm.

We would like to force users to wait at least 60 seconds before they can log back into the RDS Collection.

Intial App Launch shows logon screen

The initial launch of an app shows a logon screen with

title: Waiting for remoteapp programs to start
Please review any messages that appear

Showing our logon banner, and then loading profile etc...is there a way to not show this to each user on the initial app launch?

Edit: We are using Windows 2012 R2 for the gateway and host

Restricting access on an application

Hi,

I have an application "A" installed on a Windows 2008 server which is configured as a Terminal server but not published the application "A" as a remote app.

Here my question is who ever has rights on that server logs in open the application "A" automatically. Now I want to restrict that application "A" to be open by certain users only. I tried to restrict the permissions on the application"A" configuration folders which are in Program files but not happy with it. Any ideas please?? Thanks.

Cannot log off or reset a user's session from Remote Desktop Services Manager

Server 2008 R2 - fully patched - Running Remote Desktop services

We regularly have Remote Desktop users whose sessions become hung and will not logoff.

I found a thread (which I cannot link to) but the "Answer" does not work.

Any running processes will not stop, I tried the Task Manager, Remote Desktop Manager, Powershell commands, DOS commands, etc.

Is there a fix for this?

RDWeb apps keep appearing as RDP files.

Hi All,

Currently have a server 2008 r2 machine running rdsh & rdweb services (no broker or gateway installed).

I recently started customizing our RDWeb page - a few changes i made were to remove the remote desktop access option from the rdweb menu (showdesktop from true to false), comment out the help link once logged into rdweb and added in compatibility options for IE when viewing RDWeb on IE11 - X-UA-Compatible IE=9.

Once i did these i then tried publishing some apps using the App Manager, however now when i publish any apps, as shown in the pictures, they seem to appear as RDP icons even when i dont have any custom RDP options set. I also seem to get 'The Remote computer could not be found' even when executing both the 'paint' file or the custom rdp files i created.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Can a TS client find their disconnected session?

We use TS for our major software application.  We have 7 TS servers.  The TS environment/network can be a bit dodgy.  We have users getting kicked out of their TS sessions.

What I would like to do is have the users who are booted from their TS sessions, reestablish their old session on the TS server which they were on previously.  This would allow them to go right back into the application and finish what they were working on.

Is there a way to do this?

Prevent Users from Restarting server through Terminal Services

$

We have a Terminal Server running 2012R2 with an Access-based program installed using Access Runtime2k3. We are noticing that when users execute the program for the first time, the program runs through an automated first time configuration, after which the user is prompted to restart the system to complete the setup.  If the user clicks No, the program opens and runs fine, but if they click Yes, the entire server restarts.

We need to find a way to prevent the users from being able to restart the server as this would completely interrupt other users that are logged in.  We have already modified several Group Policy settings to prevent users access to Shutdown and Restart options, as well as prevent them from opening the Run dialogue box.  We have also modified Local Policies of the Server to specify that only administrators have the ability to shut down the server, however, when this program runs the first time configuration and prompts the user for a restart, it seems to get around all of that.

Is there some other GPO setting that would completely prevent a system from being restarted by a standard user, even if the restart is initiated from a program that the user has access to?  Is there a way to possibly prevent the program from prompting for user input?  The users have a desktop shortcut that points to a .adp file so I'm thinking some kind of quiet switch /q or something that could follow this and prevent user input we could possibly try?

Azure MFA with Azure AD and RDS

I have setup the following lab in Azure and i need your help.

A server (Domain controller) and Remote desktop services.

And another server with Multi factor authentication server.

I have setup everything following this one http://www.rdsgurus.com/uncategorized/step-by-step-using-windows-server-2012-r2-rd-gateway-with-azure-multifactor-authentication/

and when im connecting i got the following error.

The user "domain\username", on client computer "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx", did not meet connection authorization policy requirements and was therefore not authorized to access the RD Gateway server. The authentication method used was: "NTLM" and connection protocol used: "RPC-HTTP". The following error occurred:"23003".

Also on the security log i've got the following

Authentication Details:
Connection Request Policy Name: TS GATEWAY AUTHORIZATION POLICY
Network Policy Name: -
Authentication Provider: RADIUS Proxy
Authentication Server: test.test.local
Authentication Type: -
EAP Type: -
Account Session Identifier: -
Reason Code: 113

Reason: The remote RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service) server group does not exist.

I have setup CAP to allow Domain users... Register the NPS to active directory....

I don't know what else to do.

Can someone help on that?

Thanks

Hyper V 2012 R2 Host & 2 VMs 2008 R2 - Application hangs

$

Hi -

I have a Hyper V 2012 R2 Host that has 8 different VMs. 2 out of 8 VMs are running 2008 R2 as Terminal servers.

In the terminal server environment, we run one application, which hangs in the background even after closing the window. It happens on only that program.

I ran process explorer, process monitor - it doesn't point anything out to why the application is hanging under windows task manager under processes even after closing the application window.

Not sure what/where to take this issue, is it hyper-v? is it Terminal services?

Thanks.

Remote Desktop hangs at Configuring Remote Session

$

I've had this issue occur just recently where whenever I try to RDP into servers on my network the RDP connection hangs at configuring remote session and eventually fails saying it cannot connect. But when I try to connect the second time it goes right through with no issues. Doesn't seem to matter if I use just the host name or FQDN. Has anyone seen this before? All but a couple of the servers are 2012 R2. The DC's are 2012 and 2012 R2. DNS appears to be working properly and I see no errors in event logs that indicates an issue.

Event ID 311 - remote computer does not support secure device redirection

$

I'm seeing the following 311 Event ID in my Remote Desktop Services logs on a Windows 2012 R2 server when trying to connect to the RDGateway server using itself as an Remote Desktop Gateway server:

The user DOMAIN\User, on client computer "IPv4 IP Address", did not connect to the following network resource: "hostname" because the remote computer does not support secure device redirection. Try selecting another network resource or possibly lower RD Gateway security by modifying RD CAP to allow client connections to resources that do not enforce device redirection.

  • DOMAIN\User is a Domain Administrator account
  • IPv4 IP Address is the external IP address of the PC from which I'm attempting the connection
  • hostnamis the name of the server I'm trying to connect to (which is the RD Gateway Server itself)

I can RDP directly onto the server, so I don't believe it's a problem with the Remote Desktop client application on my PC.  I can also use the RDGateway server to connect to other machines on the same network and domain as the RDGateway server - it only fails when I attempt to connect to the RD Gateway server using the RD Gateway server.  All machines on the domain are Windows 2012 R2, but I can only surmise there's a difference somewhere between the working servers and the RDGateway server which is causing this error.

Looking through some articles the only suggestion is to remove the Only allow client connections to Remote Desktop Session Host servers that enforce RD Gateway device redirectionoption from the CAP, however that appears to make the connections less-secure, and also shouldn't be necessary being as it works for all the other PCs I'm connecting to.  To confuse matters further, I have another completely separate environment built from the same scripts where this works as expected!  Finally, to add insult to injury, this does appear to work following a reboot of the RDGateway server (not a practical solution for a production environment, obviously!).

Any ideas, assistance or thoughts would be greatly received.

TS client's printout going to another TS client's printer -- HOW?

The clients belong to two different companies that both utilize our TS on 2012R1. We have made no changes to the server in 3-4 months and this just started happening this week. It has happened 3 or 4 times that we know of. There are 300-500 clients on the TS at any given time. Th TS client sessions are configured with a single startup program so they do not have access to the desktop.

Remote-App lost focus / Screen/Window jumping

$

Hi everybody,

we have a new Terminal Server with Remote-Apps and a very interesting problem.

Host: ESXi 5.5

Guest: Windows Server 2012 R2

Remoteapp: CAS (not importend, all Remote-Apps have the problem)

Client-OS: Win7 and Win 8.1

Now the problem:

A Remote-App is started on a client - this works fine. The Remote-App opens a lot of windows (new mail, customer informations and so on) and it happens that the active windows lost the focus and jumps into the background and another windows is in front with the focus.

The problem is not reproducible and with this caution it is not possible to work with the Remote-App.

I found following hotfix (http://support.micro...b/2964832/en-us) but it is not applicable to the clients.

If somebody needs additional information, i will be available.

Thanks for your help and time!

Kind regards

User Profile Service event id 1530 with every remote desktop logout

$

I've been receiving User Profile Service event id 1530 with nearly every logout from an rdp session.  Our environment is Windows 2008 R2 64 bit running on Citrix XenServer 5.5.  RDP is in remote administration mode.  Tested with and without Windows updates applied.  No additional printers added, no connection to a domain.

Because the environment is virtual, I've been able to try many combinations and have narrowed it down to this: When Windows 2008 R2 has a single processor, the event does not occur.  When I give the virtual server two processors, the event occurs with nearly every RDP logout.  Same results with or without XenTools installed.  I do not have the resources to test the single/multi processor difference on physical hardware.

Any insights would be appreciated. I've posted the full event as well as information about the process that is mentioned in the event.

Access is Denied - Remote Desktop

$

I have set up my Server (2008 R2 Foundation) for remote desktop and RemoteApp as per the instructions provided by Microsoft.  I am using a single server for all functions.  When a user logs in to the Server through remote desktop, the remote desktop screen comes up and then the user immediately gets an 'Access is Denied' message.  If the user connects through RDWeb, the RemoteApps are displayed, but when the user clicks on an application, they are prompted again for their login credentials and then they get the remote desktop screen with an 'Access is Denied' screen as well.  This happens even for Administrators.

I am getting very frustrated with this as I have read many blogs and tried everything to no avail.  PLEASE help me.
