Remote Desktop Connections in Server 2016 Essentials

$

I am getting ready to purchase windows server 2016 essentials for a small business. Because of our accounting system, we need to have 6 concurrent remote desktop connections to one server. We are currently running 2012r2 essential evaluation, which limits us to 2 connections. Before plunking down cash for 2016 essentials (or breaking my currently running setup to try 2016), I need to know how many remote desktop connections windows server 2016 essentials allows. Can anyone point me to documentation telling me what i need to know? Thanks in advance!

Is there a way to locate my Remote Desktop Licensing Server?

Hello,

Let me give you some context:) I'm new in a company. We have a medium size environment and we still use Server 2003 Terminal Server for user access.

We've added a few 2012 RDS Servers to replace the old TSs and ran into a brick wall with licensing.

As far as I know, there is/was a licensing server hidden somewhere, but I don't know where.

Is there a way to locate that server? A Powershell command maybe?

Or if I connect to a 2003 TS, is there a way to find out who issued its license?

win 2012 R2 Licensing Diagnosis error

hello

I have a problem with License Diagnosis tool.

My Terminal Services works fine, everywhere I check I see that my CAL licenses are installed.

Meanwhile License Diagnosis shows message:

"the remote desktop session host server is in per user licensing mode and no redirector mode

but license server ServerName.domain.com does not have any installed licenses with the following attributes:

Product version: Windows Server 2012

Licensing mode: Per User

License type: RDS CALs"

but in the same window below i have:

details of license server configuration:

License Type: RDS CALs per User

Version: windows Server 2012

Installed :5

Available:0

So is there a bug in Licensing Diagnosis ?

How can I check for sure if everything is OK with my Terminal Services ?

Maybe some PowerShell script ?

thanks in advance for any help

single session with multiple logins

I have a single user out of 10 using remote web workplace who's home computer is logging in multiple times per session, as in 9-11 in a half hour, then the whole session collapses and all of the sessions are closed out.  Very frustrating for the user (boss) who is trying to work remote.  I've replaced the profile, the local ISP repeatedly insists there is no problem on their end and I can't duplicate the problem from another computer.

This is a Windows 10 system connecting to a 2008 r2 server.  Other Windows 10 systems don't have a problem connecting and staying connected for hours.

RDS Profiles not Roaming on 2016 Servers (when using AD profile setting), but works with GPO

Hey Everyone,

I'm experimenting with 2016 RDS, as I want to upgrade our 2012R2 Session Host servers. I have 2012R2 domain controllers (if that matters).

I am noticing that roaming RDS profiles isn't working at all on my 2016 RDS session host servers. A user logs in and gets a local profile, and when they log out, the profile isn't uploaded at all. It's basically just a regular local profile. I have the field set to \\fileserver\rdsprofiles in AD. This has worked fine in RDS in 2003, 08R2, and 2012R2.

However, if I create a GPO and set the profile location that way (Computer - Policies - Administrative Templates - Windows Components - RDS - Session Host - Profiles - Set path for Remote Desktop Services Roaming User Profile), roaming profiles are created on the share and everything works fine, and I can see a new .v6 profile being created. Logging in and out roams the profile properly.

Any thoughts as to why? Has the AD 'Remote Desktop Services Profile' attribute been depreciated for 2016?

I have tried lots of troubleshooting, deleting profiles, new shares, etc, I can't seem to get it to work with the AD attribute (but works fine when set with GPO).

EDIT: Tried this in a homelab setup as well (all 2016 servers), and same thing - only the GPO setting takes effect.

Remote Desktop Homedrive not being mapped

Hello,

I'm running a Windows 2016 Remote Desktop PoC. When the Remote Desktop profile location is specified in the Active Directory the Home drive is not being mapped in the session. Any idea how this is possible? It works for Windows 2008 R2 and 2012 R2.

I've checked and there is no DNS issue of any kind and I can map the drive manually.

When I use a GPO to map the Remote Desktop home drive everything works as expected, however this is not possible since we have users with TS home drives in different locations.

I'm running the latest January update, DCs and AD Schema is 2012 R2.

Thanks

Remote Desktop - user account environment settings are ignored at logon

I recently purchased a Dell T130 server with Windows Server 2016 Standard, and installed the Remote Desktop Services role on the server.  I set up a new user, checked the "Start the following program at logon" option on the environment tab of the user account, and entered the program file name and start in path.  However, when the user logs into the server via the RDP/RDS client, the environment settings are ignored.  The program does not start, and the session logs the user onto a desktop, which I don't want.

Here are some things I tried which haven't helped...

1. Made the user a member of the "administrators" group.
2. Added my application to the published remote apps list
3. Enabled the "Allow remote start of unlisted programs" in the Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services/Remote Desktop Session Host/Connections group policy
4. Disabled the "Always show desktop on connection" in the Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services/Remote Desktop Session Host/Remote Session Environment group policy
5. Installed the "Windows Server Essentials Experience" on the server
6. Logged onto the server with a local user instead of a domain user
7. Uninstalled Remote Desktop Services roles and reinstalled them

How do I get Windows Server 2016 to launch the program configured on the environment tab of the user account when the user logs on to a Remote Desktop session?

Multiple RDS deployments same forest

The setup has:
-2x 2012R2 server with the session host role configured
-1x 2012R2 server with the gateway, webaccess and connection broker installed
-1x domain controller
-1x application server running a SQL database

A application is published on the RD Web Access server, the users are only using the remote app to connect.
-The web access URL: tenant.fabrikam.com
-The gateway URL: tenant.fabrikam.com

The plan is to setup a multitenant environment, the others customers need to access a different domain/URL, for example:  tenant.contoso.com

An option would be to add a second RD Web access website to the existing RD Web Access server, however the preferred way is to add a second RD Web Access server. But the problem is the RD Gateway is also installed on the same server and has the wildcard certificate.

For the reason above i think the best option is to deploy a new RDS infrastructure (Gateway, Web Access, Connection Broker and Session hosts) that uses the same AD domain and is able to use the same application server.

Is it possible to deploy multiple remote desktop services in the same forest?

I do not find this option.
Configure Remote Control of Remote Desktop Services Sessions.

This link (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771538%28v=ws.11%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396) is about the process in Win server 2012. And here (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725700(v=ws.11).aspx) remotely control a user session.

How to disable local resources in RDP using policy?

Hi all,

I'm reaching out for help with an issue I have. Some of my end users need to use external, third party RDP servers. I have no control over the configuration of these servers. For security reasons I want to make it impossible for internal resources (such as my end users local drives) to be available in their RDP sessions on these external servers. My end users use thin clients and domain accounts to connect to Win10 sessions on a Citrix farm. They have to connect to the external third party RDP servers from these Win10 sessions.

Does anyone know if this is possible at all and what my options might be? Any solutions I found myself require server side configuration. Any help is much appreciated!

How to enumerate virtual device which should only appear in that session

Hi,

I have a project where it will enumerate virtual USB audio device in windows 7/8,.. I am able to run this in windows server too but this device is appearing as a server resource where all the sessions able to access (if they disable local audio redirection while connecting to remote desktop services in windows server 2008). My question is I want to enumerate my virtual device so that it should only appear for the session/user. No other session/user should access this device.

When I enable local audio redirection and connect to widows server machine it is able to show one audio device ("Remote Audio") and will be available to that user. Once I disconnect the session this audio device also being removed. I need similar behaviour with my virtual audio device.

Please help in this regard.

Hi All

I have just installed an RDS solution for one of my customers, I am now in the process of creating a document outlining the schematics and infrastructure, basically what is RDS and how it works.

Is there any template that I can use that will help me create this document?

Hey

We have a HP moonshot with m710x cartridges (and Iris Pro P580 graphics)

Would you recommend installing the RDS on baremetal or as VM (hyperV)?

Thanks in advance

ADS & DNS Server with Hyper-V

Dear All

I have the following setup.

1. Host Server which is also ADS server and DNS Server. This is the physical server. WS2012R2 is the Base OS.

2. 4 x Hyper-V Guest Servers running WS2012R2 Std Edition configured  onto this server.

3. One of the Hyper-V Servers is a Terminal Client Server. We have about 50 Thin Clients connecting to this server. Another is the application Server.

4. The Thin Clients have Win7 OS embedded on them. The Thin Clients connect to TS server first and then they can access the application server.

Problem :

Sometimes when Thin Clients try to log in ; they get message TS-Server could not be located ; i.e. the TS-Server is not accessible. But when the Thin Client is rebooted

Some times the problem goes away after a few minutes. Without doing anything.

Sometimes we have to reboot the TS Server ( Virtual).

Sometimes we have to shutdown all servers and reboot the physical host server and restart everything all over again. But the problem comes up again in next 2-3 days.

We have installed all the windows updates and patches and we do it weekly for all servers.

Any suggestions ?

Task you are trying to do cannot be completed because remote desktop services is currently busy

I have an odd issue connecting thin clients to a new 2012r2 RDS Farm.

I have ~200 Wyse thin clients using remote apps to a farm of 5 Term Servers..  Connections work fine, no issues with connectivity.

We are wanting to use a pure RDS environment, so we have provisioned a 2 server farm for testing.  All connectivity is internal.  Thin Clients are in Appliance Mode, so they power on, user logs in, Client starts RDP to server.

At first connection, the trust warning is provided.  If we check the box to not display the message again, this first connection is made, user logs in.  All is good.

When the user logs out, connection is cleared from the collection, and client powers down.

Next login, user logs into client, RDP session starts, message "Task you are trying to do can't be completed because remote desktop services is currently busy".  Note that there is only this test user connecting to servers.  It shows that user has logged into the collection.  At this point, we have to log the user out of the collection, and have them reboot the client.

Now at the above mentioned Trust warning, if we do NOT select the "do not ask..." box, and it displays the warning, we select continue, it makes the connections without issue.  So we only receive the message if we select the "Do not ask for future connections" button.

I am at a loss.  I am NOT a term server guy, and my consultant that has done our original setup here, and the new setup is stumped as well.

Any help appreciated!

James

Terminal Server loads temp profiles

$

Hi Guys,

We are experiencing an issue with one of our terminal servers were if we have more than 60 connections they all load into temporary profiles. We have done the usual of removing the sid from the profilelist in regedit, Remove the user account folder and we have replaced the default profile many times. It just seems once we have that magic 60 number it refuses to let another load his profile. The server has loads of resources and it's not under any load.

I have a license of 75 per device cals installed so im within my limit. It also shows 4 temporary device cals are issued is this normal?

Its Server 2008 r2.

Sorry any profiles beyond the 60th connection loads into a temporary profile.

I also get these messages even though it says i have 15 licenses available.

The Remote Desktop license server "MSK-TERMSERV-04" does not have any remaining permanent licenses of the type "Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 : Per Device CAL (TS or RDS)". As a result, the Remote Desktop license server cannot issue licenses of the type "Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 : Per Device CAL (TS or RDS)" to the Remote Desktop Session Host or Remote Desktop Virtualization Host server "MSK-TERMSERV-04". To resolve this problem, verify that the Remote Desktop licensing mode configured on the RDSH or RDVH server matches the type of licenses installed on the Remote Desktop license server. If required, purchase and install additional licenses as needed for this Remote Desktop license server.

RDP Licensing per user

Can I RDP from 7 computer using Jack username and RDP from 9 computer using John username simultaneously?

RDS - Session Virtualisation - How to open App in users own desktop

$

Hi Guys
I am hoping to get some clarification.
I am in the middle of deploying a RDS FARM (Session Virtualization) for a client.
I will be presenting a bunch of URL in the "Remote App" page once a user authenticates via the webaccess URL.

I understand when a user clicks on a URL from the Remote App page it fires up a RDP session for the user and hides the RDP window so the user gets a feel that they are using a Web app. But this means, the user is using the RDS Farm resources when they click on the URL.

Question

Is it possible to have a Citrix like experience, ie, when the user clicks on the URL from the Remote app page
rather than opening an IE browser window from the Session Host server the IE session opens from users own desktop?

Thanks in advance
J
