RDS 2016 - preventing users hitting Session Host machines directly via RDP client

$

0

Hi, I am interested in how to prevent users hitting Session Host machines directly via RDP client - if they are not members (directly or indirectly by being members of some other group) of Remote Desktop Users group on Session Host machines then they will not be able to log in there via RDP as on any other server with Remote Desktop enabled. In that case if the same users belong to group session collection is published to, they will be able to log in to Session Host machine from RDWeb URL?

Also if everything written above is correct, that means local admins on Session Host machines (or domain admins) will always be able to hit them via RDP - that is perfectly ok since machines could have issues and admins are logging there to solve those.

RDS Infra sizing and capacity Planning

Hello Every one,

I'm implementing a RDS 2016 solution and I have been trying find a MS article around Recommended RDS Capacity planning and Sizing. But Im surprised that there is none of that sort. can anyone please share any link on this or please provide suggestions how it can be planned, below are my questions.

1. How to plan RDS server sizing?

2. How many connections can each RDSH server can take(i understand that it can be 999999 and depends on compute of the server),  there must be some calculation we should go with to optimize the traffic.

3. During login storms how many parallel connections can each RDgateway can handle?

Thanks,

Black Screen for Users in RDS 2016

$

Windows Server 2016 RDS setup with one DC and 3 session host servers, all running as VMs under Citrix XenServer. This is a session-based deployment for RDP sessions.

Occasionally (that means approx every 7-10 days), new users logging in to RDS get a
black screen. That is, they can successfully log in but then see only a black screen, no task bar, nothing. Users can see moving mouse cursor, and they can bring up the Task Mgr with Ctrl+Alt+End. Sometimes, after 10-15 minutes the user desktop becomes visible, but most of the
time it never does.

Normally, every additional user logging in after this occured also gets the black screen. The only solution is to reboot this session host server.

The servers are updated to PT (July 2018).

Note - I installed an additional session host server recently and noticed that this phenomena does not seem to happen on that one (at least not as frequent). Same update status but was installed from later download media (evaluation edition download from internet, then converted to Standard edition by inputting a license). They do, however, all show the same build number in the settings app: 14393.2248.

So is it recommended to make a new install for all session host servers? Do not really understand why I would have to do that. They have the same update level, just one was installed from a later base media - but it's the same edition. Doesn't a server end up with an identical setup no matter what original media file was used, with all the updates? That should be the point of the updates, or not?

Or is there any other underlying reason for the black screen phenomenon which I should address?

Windows 7 using Remote App & RDP logging into Win 2012 Server - Corrupt colors

$

The colors are off (yellow text & black back ground in Windows Explorer) on some users when they log into a Windows 2012 server via RDP & using the Remote App..  It only happens from a Windows 7 machine, and only on that particular Server, and only certain users.  When I use RDP or the Remote App from a Windows 10 machine (same user), no issues.

I've tried updating the registry key via GPO to go with the Aero theme

I've tried deleting everything in the  C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\aero\VSCache folder to let the server rebuild, but there was nothing there.

I've changed the C:\Windows\Resources\Ease of Access Themes\basic.theme file to only go with the Aero theme not the Aero.lite theme.

I've done this "SFC /scannow" and "DISM /online /cleanup-image /resorehealth"." -

Nothing has worked..  I'm about a week away from just creating a new server and migrating the data... but that's not giving me a reason why or a way to prevent it from happening again.

User Disk Profile and Folder Redirection + RemoteApp fails first attempt

I will try explaining the scenario we have there:

We created two RDS collections to seperate desktop sessions from remote app sessions, so in this case we can control who can access which applications:

Collection1: Remote Desktop

Collection2: RemoteApp

Issue 1:

Each collection has it's own UDP (That's by design), so in order to allow users to have the same desktop folder, documents... etc we implemented Folder Redirection to another shared location, and that's worked perfectly.

My question is:

Does that have any impact on performance, because the environment is still fresh now and we don't have much users using it, but I don't know what will happen when the environment grows and users save gigabytes on there desktops?

Issue 2:

The other issue I have here is related to the remote apps:

RemoteApps are installed on collection2 and published inside the desktops in Collection1 by GPO:

https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/dsadsi/2011/11/30/automating-the-silent-deployment-of-remoteapp-and-desktop-connection/

Running a remote app at the first time a user logs in fails at the first attempt, and it works the second time a user tries. I can't figure out what would cause such a behaviour.. do you have any idea?

Thanks in advanced

Start Menu Not Working Frequently for Users (RDS 2016)

Windows Server 2016 RDS setup with one DC and 3 session host servers, all running as VMs under Citrix XenServer. This is a session-based deployment for RDP sessions.

On 2 of these servers, the Start menu does not work most of the time. Users logged in to RDS cannot use it. You click and nothing happens, not even after many minutes. Search function does not seem to work either at this time, so it might be a general UWP app problem.

Seems that it does work for a short time after a session host server has been rebooted but latest the next day it doesn't work.

I find lots of posts, mostly years old, on Windows 10 start menu not working but cannot necessarily apply the "fixes" in a RDS scenario. And most of them seem to say (years ago) that the latest Windows Updates fixed the issue. But it isn't fixed as of right now, July 2018.

What is the reason for this and is there any fix or handling for it?

RDP logon takes 5 minutes

$

Hello,

I have a problem on several 2k8 servers: since a few days, when I get my hands on it in RDP the logon lasts 5 minutes. In the eventviewer I have: A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the  ShellHWDetection service. And the same with the processes: Dnscache, CryptSvc, NlaSvc. the server reboot solves the problem but only for a few days. After that starts again, I tried among other things:
- Testing from another workstation
- Disabling the print spooler
- Disabled smart card printers, etc. in connection settings
- Disable antivirus software
- GPO : System\Logon\Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon (Turns off Fast Logon Optimization)
- No Active directory replication problems
- No DNS problem
- The servers are in the OU computers and my user in the OU users (so no GPO)

without success, not against when I connect directly to it (without going through an RDP connection) I have no problem.
Do you have any idea?

Thansk in advance,

C.

RemoteApp fails to connect on a single PC

I have 2 different customers that both have 1 PC each that will not run RemoteApps from their terminal server.  This started on about 4/15/2018 for the first customer, and the second customer had the issue since at least 4/23/2018.  These are established Remote Desktop Services installations with other PCs able to run the apps fine, and these PCs were able to successfully run the RemoteApps previously.

When they attempt to run the RemoteApps, it immediately pops up an error message stating "Your computer was unable to connect to the remote computer.  Try to reconnect. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator."  However, both workstations can still successfully open a Remote Desktop Session to their respective terminal servers.

I have gone through Event Viewer on the Remote Desktop Services servers and could not find any correlating events. I searched through Application, System, Security, and all of the Remote-Desktop*, RemoteApp*, RemoteDesktop*, and TerminalServices* logs in Applications and Services Logs/Microsoft/Windows/.

On the client PCs, I do find a correlating event in Microsoft-Windows-RemoteApp and Desktop Connections/Operational. Example:

Unable to delete the Userclass.dat as it is open in SYSTEM

I have tried to delete the Userclass.dat file precisely as it is annoying to get deleted throwing pop up as : the userclass.dat is used by SYSTEM.

Here are the troubleshooting that I did so far:

1. Tried to delete the user from the User Profiles in System Properties but cannot fine that profile precisely as there are so many Unknown account.

2.deleted the profile from Profile List in registry and rebooted the system.

3. tried to disable inheritance to the .dat file and removed the SYSTEM from the Security.

Let me know what needs to be done next.

Slow RemoteApp connection, pauses at "Preparing Windows"

Hello, we're running a Server 2012 R2 server as an RD server.  When I log into the full desktop via RDP it connects fast, however whenever I launch a remote app to that server and click on "show details" while its connecting I see that when it gets to "Preparing Windows" it hangs there for about 5 - 10 seconds before finally connecting to the app.  We connect from Windows 7 systems and are running RDP version 6.3.9600 with protocol 8.1.

Any ideas?

Server 2012 R2 RDS Deployment - RemoteApp Issues with Multiple Session Hosts

$

0

I'm having major issues with a Server 2012 R2 RDS environment when adding an additional Session Host to the existing RDS setup. Here is the configuration so far:-

- 1 x VM running Licensing, Broker & Gateway services

- 4 x VM's running Session Host services (1 = Collection #1, 2 = Collection #2, 3 & 4 = Collection #3)

Before adding the additional Session Host (#4) for Collection #3, everything runs perfect, I can access RemoteApp from RDS gateway and via RDP connection files. However whenever I add the additional Session Host, the collection stops working and I can no longer launch the RemoteApp - the connection begins to load as normal, when viewing "View Details" tab during RDP load process the process stops on "Redirecting to server" and then there's nothing - no RemoteApp. I cannot see any error logs within Event Logs for Connection Broker or existing / new Session Host Event logs. As soon as I remove the new Session Host, everything starts to work again.

I was under the impression that Server 2012 R2 had vastly simplified this process since Server 2008 R2, there is no longer a requirement for Round Robin DNS or Load Balancing because the Connection Broker handles all of this automatically - am I correct? The new Session Host (#4) is an exact replica of the original Session Host (#3), the RemoteApp application is installed in exactly the same file-path and successfully loads when opened locally. I have also re-created the Collection responsible for the 2 Session Hosts, but to no avail.

However, I have noticed that when I try to manually RDP to new Session Host after adding it to Collection #3, I receive the following error:-

Remote Desktop Connection cannot connect to the remote computer.
The remote computer that you are trying to connect to is redirecting you to another remote computer. Remote Desktop Connection cannot verify that the computers belong to the same RD session host server farm

I get around this for Admin purposes by launching mstsc using /admin switch.

Has anybody come across this? It seems simple what I'm trying to achieve but I'm clearly missing something.

How to determine RDP version used in the remote session on the server?

$

Hi!

I need to determine the version of RDP used by connected client in the terminal session on Windows Server 2012 R2.

For Windows Server 2008 I found this solution:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/8863a44e-9393-43f8-8c1f-6180eff08495/how-can-you-tell-what-version-of-the-remote-desktop-protocol-an-rdp-session-is-using?forum=winserverTS

But there is no RDS Manager where I can see session Status in Windows Server 2012 R2. How can I determine RDP version? With PowerShell maybe or something else?

Copy/paste of CF_HTML formatted content not working

$

Hello,

I did post this issue in a reply in another thread, but though best to create a new post for this issue.

I have a RemoteApp that uses CF_HTML formatted content and the only way this content can be copy/pasted from the app to the local user's computer is if drive redirection is disabled.

This issue affects Windows 7 machines but does work on Windows 10. So seems to point to a bug/limitation in the older RDP protocol.

RDS farm is Windows Server 2016.

Only info I can find online is: https://www.spicelogic.com/docs/WinHTMLEditorControl/KnownIssues/150

and this which only relates to Citrix: https://support.citrix.com/article/CTX221798

Is anyone able to shed any light on this issue and if there is any solution (other than just disabling drive redirection, which is far from ideal)?

Thanks,

One RD Licensing Manager for all servers

Hello,

I have several servers in my company and there is a need to connect remotely more users with multiple servers.
Example:
Server1.net.local has an offica installed
Server2.net.local has SQL SMS installed
The server3.net.local has Chrome installed
The server4.net.local is DC and wants to have an RDP license management server installed on it and on servers 1,2,3 to use the RDP license which is installed on the server 4 ( 20 RDP CAL User)
For example, as the first server logs in 3 users, on the second server 2 users, on the third server 4 users, on the fourth server 3 users and Additionally one user caller No. 1 has a simultaneous connection to server no. 1, 2 and 4, user of no. 2 has an open connection to server 1.3 and user no. 3 has an open connection to servers 1,2,3,4.
I still have 5 licenses on the main server for the available licenses.
The remaining servers connect only to the server managing the licenses and check whether they can allow the user to connect or the number of licenses has been used.

The point is that on each of the servers I have installed other software and needs each user to be able to simultaneously connect to more than one server.
However, the SH and Collections configuration consists in creating server farms including High availability (has one DNS entry to different IP addresses and unilaterally separates connections) so that you can connect to servers but you can not connect simultaneously to more than one server which is SH because when you try to connect to the other server, when you are connected to one of the servers, you get the message that the connection has been redirected to the first one and the next connection can not be opened.
I supported this movie:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnscjO1QAmU

I will be grateful for the help because I can not find out how it can be configured.
