Numerous Microsoft Word processes slow down RDS server

Hi guys,

RDS server is based on Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard. Not on all virtual machines with the same role but just on some of them I can see sporadically this issue.

User closes all apps and disconnects from the server but numerous Microsoft Word still run on the background which slows down the server performance.

Is there any solution to resolve this issue?

RDP session disconnected reason code 214750036

Remote desktop users keep getting disconnected for no reason, no error is received on the client's computer and they are not able to reconnect until the local administrator logs in.

Looking at the event viewer, "RDP session disconnected reason code 214750036" is logged when the problem happens but I haven't been able to find anything related to this message.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

How do I setup session based desktop deployment?

I am quite new to this and had one previous failed attempt so I'm going to go here for help. I would like a simple tutorial to set session based desktop deployment.

I am currently running windows server 2016 with only AD DS added.

Mandatory vs Local Profiles For Best Login Performance

I'm building out a new RDS Server 2016 environment to replace our aging RDS 2008 environment.  One emphasis we're trying to place on the new system is faster logins.  After doing some testing on both our prod 2008 and dev 2016 RDS environments, it's clear that a lot of the login time is attributed to new profile creation.  It easily doubles our login time from about 40 seconds to over a minute.  We do use folder redirection for favorites and documents.  We currently do a weekly purge of the profiles on our 2008 environment just to keep things clean but this comes at the expense of longer login times due to new profile creation.

Two options I've been considering are:

1.) Continue using local profiles but have some sort of script that would clean them up periodically, but do not delete them entirely.  The disadvantage is that while we have a relatively small number of hosts (12), it will take some time for every user to have a profile generated on each server.  Also there is chance of profile corruption if we don't eventually purge the profiles.  The benefit is that there should not be any issues with app compatibility.

2.) Implement local mandatory profiles but this may cause issues with certain applications such as Skype for Business that requires a certificate store.  I did see an article mention that the state key can be changed in the SID so that the Skype app thinks its a local profile.   We also have a few other old oddball apps that I would be concerned will not play nice with mandatory profiles.  The benefit with mandatory profiles is smaller profile size and less chance of corruption.

Since we have folder redirection to cover favorites and documents, and we're also going to redirect the Outlook OST, we really just need a way that will get the user logged in quickly that will support the apps.  Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Josh

Establish Outlook Profile When Using Published Remote App

$

We have a RDP server where we publish Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 via remote app. When a user uses the remote app Dyanamics AX it will spawn a PDF file which will open with Adobe Acrobat reader that is installed on the RDP server with the DAX client. Microsoft Office 2016 is also isntalled on the RDP server. When the PDF file is open the user will click the Mail icon in Adobe Reader that looks for the users Outlook Profile and will tell the user they need to configure their Outlook profile in order to send the PDF via e-mail. We have configured Group Policy to auto configure each users outlook profile on the RDP server. The problem is that the Outlook profile isn't actually created until Outlook is opened under the user profile. Remember this is a published app they are using not a full RDP session so they do not have access to launch the Outlook Client. We don't need them to have access to Outlook, we just need the Outlook profile created so that the Adobe reader app will detect it and use that profile to send e-mail.

Is there any way we can establish the Outlook profile, transparently to the user? Logon script, or any other technology?

I know that once the profile is established by opening Outlook then the mailing function of Adobe Reader works. I tested this out by trying to mail from adobe only using the Published App, DAX. Adobe wouldn't detect the Outlook profile. I then logged onto the RDP server using a full RDP session as the same user, opened Outlook, the profile autoconfigured as expected, then closed Outlook. Kicked my remote app session, and logged off. I relaunched the Published app DAX and when the PDF spawned Adobe was able to detect the Outlook profile.

RDS Session State

Hi Guys,

I am wondering if someone can explain this to me. I am trying to find all idle or disconnected users on session host servers and with powershell that is easy but there are options like state active and state connected. Does this state connected mean that the user is idle, connected to rds session host but either has minimized rdp session or just not working on the computer.

What other states can I expect except these

Everything was fine until recently that error showed up.
my role and features was set to Active Directory and RDS, and it worked good for about a year.
Now, when I restart the server, the Server Manager shows me no errors and everything is loaded, but in about 30 minutes (sometimes the next day) the error shows up again and the role and features mentioned above disappear.

Cannot remote into some servers

I use RDP Manager 2.7

I have Sonicwall at each location. I VPN using Sonic's client and then RDP locally into a server. Some serves work, some unable to establish connection. When i restart my computer some connections begin to work and then stop after a while. Sometimes when i establish connection and use my credentials RDP just shuts off. I tried to reinstall but nothing helps. It doesn't always happen but like today I can't remote into a few serves.

Any thoughts where should I look? I looked at Even Viewer on servers where it fails:

CAL Licences not being Issued and memory usage increasing

$

I have a Windows 2012r2 server that is not issuing CAL licenses but still running remote desktop sessions. Meanwhile the memory usage of the svchost (termsvcs) steadily increases over 4-6 weeks until it needs rebooting.

Has anyone seen this?

Here is a picture of the server in question.

Here is a picture of another server that is similar that is issuing licenses and not suffering with the same memory issues.

Flickering of Icons on the Desktop - Fix Question

$

The solution below obviously fixes the issue of flickering desktop icons when you open a word, or excel document from the desktop of a redirected folders environment:

add NoRemoteChangeNotify registry entry(REG_DWORD) to/with value 1 in below location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

But .................. and a BIG but ....

It creates another issue with mapped drives.  We have applications that write data to the UNC path of the mapped drive.  Obviously with the fix mentioned above the file does not appear in the mapped drive location without pressing F5.  Because the functionality of our applications rely on the respective file being present, pressing F5 is not a workable solution.

What else can I do, is there some kind of function, script, GPO or registry entry that will continuously take care of mapped drive refreshes?

Thanks in advance.

Server 2016 Remote Apps are starting in separate sessions

$

I have an odd problem.  Everywhere I read, it seems remote apps that are started from the same client should start in the same session if I haven't logged off from that session.  My apps are starting in separate sessions.

I have apps installed on Server 2016 and published through RemoteApp. I also have a 15 minute session idle timeout enabled.  When that 15 minutes is about to be reached, each app individually gives a 2 minute logout warning.  So if I have 3 apps idling, I get that warning 3 times.  In the server manager, under Connections, I can also see 3 individual connections.   I don't remember changing anything to set them to open up as separate sessions. Does anyone know how to reverse this? Thank you.

RDS 2012r2 SH servers allow 6 users to connect to pool then get an error no more connection available. License servers defined in collection and all servers show License servers have 345 users available. Setup is one CB server 1 web server and 5 session host servers. session limits set at 25 per server. have checked everything and cant seem to find out why it happens when it hit 6 users. I Setup a new farm and it has the same issue.

RDCman Reconnect Server Uses Wrong Account

Using RDCman, if I remoted into a box using a custom account, then try the reconnect server function, it uses my default account opposed to the account that I logged in with. I expected the reconnect server function to reuse the credentials of the last login.

Is there a way to fix this?

IE ESC Issue

Hi

I am having a problem with internet explorer's enhanced security configuration. The situation is I set up a VM of a 2016 RDS server with all apps installed and settings configured all good. I then cloned that VM and syspreped the clone to use as a template. The problem seems to begin when we spin up a new server of the template IE ESC shows as disabled in server manager for both users and administrators. However when a user logs into the server and opens a webpage they get a content blocked message by enhanced security configuration message.

Has anyone else had this issue and how did they resolve

SmartCard with RemoteDesktop on Mac

Hello,

we´re a team developing a windows Application that can read healthcare- smartcards from pc/sc-card readers via ct-api wrapper. Here is my problem:

When connecting the card-reader via usb on an Macbook (MacOs High Sierra) and connecting to a Windows Server 2016, where our Software is running, the card can not be connected. Sending the REQUEST_ICC via ct_data, the response is 62 A7(No ATR compliant with ISO 7816-3, no protocol selected).

Doing the same thing with a window 10-Client, reading the card suceeds.

Using a testtool for card-readers, a diagnosis gives me this status as soon as the card is inserted:

"State changed. A card is in the reader. The card in the reader is in use by one or more other applications, but may be connected to in shared mode."

Is it possible, that the Remote-Desktop-Client does something wrong here or is this a mac-issue?

What happens if I dont install RDS User CALs?

$

Hi,

Before I ask my question, let me tell you what I did so far.

I setup a Windows Server 2012 R2 server.
Changed following GPO configuration settings located at: Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Licensing
- Use the specified Remote Desktop license servers
- Set the Remote Desktop licensing mode

Enabled the latter and selected Per User setting.
I also went to RD Licensing Manager and Activated the server.

In the RD Licensing Diagnoser, I see following error:
"The Remote Desktop Session Host server is in Per User licensing mode and No Redirector Mode"

Following is my question:
What happens if I dont install User CALs? Will remote desktop services stop working after 120 days or some??

Thanks a lot for answers.
