Delays in user experience, using a RDS-deployment

$

Hi!

I need help with a RDS-deployment where our users primarily experience delays in open PDF files.
If a user opens a PDF-file in Acrobat Reader DC from the Desktop it takes approx 20-30 seconds to open it. But only the first time. If the user close the file and open a different PDF-file, it starts within a few seconds.

We first believed that it had something to do with the application itself. But we have tried "all" setting configurations in Adobe, without any progress.

We also experience delays when opening for an example Windows Powershell as administrator, DNS Manager, Active Directory Users and Computers on the domain controller. Approx 20-30 seconds as well.

We don't see anything strange, warnings or errors, in the event log.

For the RDS-deployment we use user profile disks on another server, 20 GB maximum.

We have temporarily disabled the firewall, antivirus, verified power plan "high performance" etc.

After a lot of troubleshooting, I tried to create a new admin user with exactly the same access and created in the same OU as another admin user that experience the delays. The new user is working totally normal. All problems described above can't be reproduced. Can someone explain why?

The environment contains of one domain controller, one file server (user profile disks) and the RDS server. Windows Server 2016 Standard. The RDS server has 8 GB RAM, 4 CPU. Approx 10 users uses the remote desktop simultaneously. CPU and RAM utilization is ok. All RDS roles is installed on the RDS server.

It's VMware in the background, we don't find anything strange regarding disk latency either. We use paravirtual disks.

Thanks in advance!

Terminal Server - Adobe Reader and IE hogging resources

I am having some issues with a couple of programs on our terminal server. We are running Windows 2019. The problem programs are Adobe Reader and Internet Explorer. They appear to be taking up lots of resources and I'm hoping that there are registry settings or group policies that I can implement to reduce the utilization.

RemoteApp External Access Issue

Hello,

I have deployed an RDS server on Windows 2016 Standard with all the roles: RD Web Access, RD Gateway, RD Licensing, RD Connection Broker and RD Session Host. I have installed a wildcard certificate on the IIS (with https binding) and assigned it to all RDS services, including the RD Gateway, and the status is "Trusted" and "Ok".

All published apps are working fine from the internal network. As for the external (internet) access, i'm able to sign in to the portal and see all the resources, but whenever i click on any of them i have a popup message from "RD Gateway Server Credentials" asking for user and password. I'm supplying the correct credentials yet i'm faced with "Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because the Remote Desktop Gateway server is temporarily unavailable..."

Note the following details:

The local domain is different than the external one, and the wildcard certificate was created for the public one.
-RD Gateway in the deployment properties was configured to use the external FQDN.
-Only Port 443 is published to the internet.
-All clients are using Windows 10 (Pro/Ent).

Any help would be much appreciate it! Been working days to solve this issue and read many articles but couldn't find the proper solution.

Thx.

Desktop background and color

Hello,

I'm looking for some tips on how to use GP set the background color of the desktop, and/or taskbar (not as important). Server 2016 session host servers providing a full published desktop.

Why?

Some of my sites have low bandwidth so I want to force the background wallpaper to be removed (done), and to change the remaining desktop color to something other than black (not done).

Any tips?

I have:

  • I have used GP to remove the desktop wallpaper. Now the background is black, with a black task bar
GP > Computer Config > Admin Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Remote Session Environment

This is not the correct setting:

  • GP > Computer Config > Admin Templates > Control Panel > Personalization > Force a specific background and accent color
(this is actually controlling the start menu colors)

I am hoping there is a more efficient way to control this other than setting a background image of one color and XX pixels in size.

Webcam redirection not working 2012R2 collection

Hi,

I'm trying to redirect a Microsoft USB LifeCam Cinema to a 2012R2 collection. So far without success:

- On the local W10P PC, RDP Connection, Local Resources, More: "Under Other supported RemoteFX USB devices" the webcam is listed and the device selected

- In the collection under "Client Settings", "Enable redirection for the following" all devices are selected

- When I connect to one of the session hosts the webcam is not redirected and in the RD connectionbar the device doesn't show up

- In the session host event protocoll, under RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS, event 258 is logged: The session doesn't use further RemoteFX-RemoteApp-Graphics

The RDS session hosts run on a hyper-v cluster, also 2012R2. The session, client to RDS session host runs over a VPN connection.

What else could I try? Or which trouble shooting steps could I take?

Thanks and regards

Ueli

RD Broker does not reconnect to a disconnected session

Hello
We have a problem connecting users to disconnected sessions.

Test Farm Server 2019 with all lastest updates:

2 x RDGW and Web Access (nlb)

2 x RD Broker (nlb)

3 x RD Session Hosts

Configure keep-alive connection interval 1m

Restrict Remote Desktop Services users to a single Remote Desktop Services session Enable

All internal and external users:

Connect session OK. Close session by cross on rdp client (not logoff)

After disconnecting the user and trying to reconnect, the Broker connects to another RDSH server.

Events:

RD Connection Broker received connection request for user .

RDSSH behind RDSGW URL

Hello folks

We have a Setup with two RDS Servers (Windows Server 2019). 1 Server is a Session Host with the Connection Broker, 1 server is the RDS Gateway. If we use mstsc to connect, we have to provide the URL/IP of the gateway (mstsc -> Show Options -> Advanced -> Settings -> Use these RD Gateway server settings...). This is a no-go because it's just to complicated for an enduser to provide this data/information.

Question:

can the RDS services be configured so that only the IP/URL of the gateway server must be specified? or is there any other best-practive aproach? it should be easy for an enduser to connect from the internet (without a vpn connection).

thanks

Migrate connection broker 2016 to 2019

$

Hi,

As RDS 2019 upgrade documentation seems to be non existing, I thought I'd ask this question here. Is it still necessary to migrate a connection broker from version 2016 to 2019 by doing an in place upgrade of the machine as was the case with 2012 to 2016? As the connection broker role is basically the same in both versions, I thought it might be possible to place the 2016 broker in HA mode, add a 2019 broker and remove the 2016 machine after that.

Is that possible?

2012 R2 RDS Temporary Profile issue

$

I have set up a standard 3 node 2012 R2 RDS for testing. All virtualized on VMware ESXi 5.0. I have a connection Broker, session host, and web access server. I have published several applications and I can access them without a problem. Here is my issue:

When I try to log on to my session host server either locally or thru RDP, I am always logged in with a Temporary profile. It does not mater what user account I use. Even logging on locally as the administrator I get a temporary profile.

All windows updates are installed and current.

I have removed the server from the domain, deleted the account, and rejoined it to the domain.

I have deleted all .bak registry entries from here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

There is a hotfix here for a similar issue on 2012 but it does not apply to 2012 R2

The only event viewer errors are:

1515 (Windows has backed up this user profile. Windows will automatically try to use the backup profile the next time this user logs on.)

1511 (Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.)

Any suggestions to resolve would be greatly appreciated.

RemoteApps connect to host, but the App won't launch

Windows Server 2016 standard - AD Environment - Clients are working from home

RemoteApps worked fine for a while; then we had to create a new certificate because it expired (used for RD connection Broker, RD Web Access, RD Gateway).

Certificate is installed on local machine, put into trusted root.

On some (very few) of my clients machines; the remoteapps will connect; but the app wont launch! (Then the client get disconnected / signe out after a few seconds.) They are machines that worked great before the new certificate.

(Machines are not part of the AD since they are external)

Here are some tests / investigation I did :

  • Not related to Windows edition (happened on a Win 7 pro, Win10 enterprise and some Win10 home)
  • Not related to AD profil the user uses to connect (Profiles work on a computer that doesnt have this problem; and every AD profiles will do the same on a computer affected by the problem)
  • Does not seem to be network related (my own personnal PC has the same issue at my home; but my laptop works fine on my same network.)
  • The remoteapps says it connected to the Gateway; but the app won't launch. (I see the user poping-up on the server; then they get disconnected 1-2 min after.)
  • If I start their application on a computer not affected by the problem; they CAN connected (over me) and see the app. Moreover; all additionnal apps will launch and work once one is working. (from different rdp files)
  • They were able to connect ONCE without problem; then the problem appeared and any profile I try for their computer, result in the same issue.
  • I tried clearing the "cache" in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Default. But the problem persist.
  • I tried installing an old / different mstsc; to no avail.
  • In one case (my personnal PC who has the problem, apparently); creating a new local Windows profile solved this issue. It didn't on 2 other PC I tried.

This has me racking my brain...

Thanks

RemoteApp RDS2019 - splash screens stuck on client

$

Hi!

I am testing RDS 2019 with RemoteApp, and I have problems with startup splash screens. Each splash screen creates a button on the client’s taskbar and does not disappear from desktop and taskbar after the appearance of the main window. For example, I run three RemoteApp and I have three splash screens and three program windows on my desktop. And even if I close these windows, the splash screens will still remain on desktop and cannot be closed. This happens only in RemoteApp and does not occur with a remote desktop mode. I tried to recreate an RDS farm again, but it does not help.

This does not happen with all programs (having splash screen), but with many. At the same time, there were no such problems at RDS 2012R2/2016.

As RDCB and RDSH used Windows Server 2019 with latest cumulative update (2019-01). As clients used Windows 10 1709/1809 with same update.

When this happens the start menu will not work. This corresponds with me enabling the roaming of C:\Users\user\AppData\Local

I'm wondering if there is a folder I should exclude from roaming.

If it's not being caused by roaming the local folder then it may be caused by some GPO settings I also changed. I did this because windows search was out of control and consuming too many resources. Unfortunately I cannot disable search completely because of Outlook. My discussion on Outlook and search I had to re enable indexing outlook.

Any guidance on this is appreciated.

So far the only fix I've come up with is temporary, which is to delete the local profile and on the next login the start menu works. After a day or 2 it stops working again. I haven't totally recreated the user profile and I'm hoping this is not the ultimate fix because that would be a PITA to have to do that for all the users that have this happen.

RemoteApp GPO is not applying for users without local admin access

My organization is planning on deploying AX 2012 R3 Client via RemoteApp for all our users. I am currently testing this out with RDS installed on a single Windows 2012 R2 Server, but in the future I will set up a new Server 2016 RDS environment for this.

I am having issues publishing the RemoteApp URL via GPO to my users. It will only work if the user has local administrator access on their PC. This cant be how it's supposed to work? I am planning on deploying this to hundreds of users! If the user manually adds it into the Control Panel Item it works. They are asked to log on once, and they just use their own credentials and it works fine.

The event log tells me this. "Windows failed to apply the {4D2F9B6F-1E52-4711-A382-6A8B1A003DE6} settings. {4D2F9B6F-1E52-4711-A382-6A8B1A003DE6} settings might have its own log file. Please click on the "More information" link."

Notes:
- I have figured out that the GUID the RemoteApp settings.
- The GPO shows up as an applied GPO in gpresult /h.
- I am sure I have seen the error "access denied" somewhere but I cant remember where now.

Reference to this thread where another admin had similar issue: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/21362dc1-24be-48ff-8447-2ca80d068d8c/rds-remoteapp-url-gpo?forum=winserverGP#21362dc1-24be-48ff-8447-2ca80d068d8c

Anyone have a clue of what may cause this? Why does this only work for users with local administrator access? Is there maybe some other GPO that blocks it?

WS 2019 terminal service frequently crashes

Hi,

we have a Windows Server 2019 Std running as an RDP server in the cloud. Since April we have the problem that the RDP sessions are often disconnected (session freezes, RDP ends automatically between 1-10x a day).

The connection to the data center is established via VPN. There are no problems with the VPN.RDP licenses are assigned to all users, and the server also has enough free resources. The TS has been restarted every night since the beginning of last week. According to user reports, the RDP abortions have become fewer. It does not always affect all users working on the terminal server at the same time.Users are connected from different locations or from the homeoffice and use Windows 10 or MacBook (yes, it also gets caught). On April 29th, 2020 I finally got an error message in the log:

Removing UPD's from Session Collection (2016)

$

Has anyone ever removed UPD's from a Terminal Services Session Collection (2016) before?

I've tested removing the setting in my dev environment and that new users don't get a UPD and existing users no longer mount theirs at login. Besides the obviously profile data now missing, are there any traps that are not obvious?

I have already enabled folder redirection so all users files and folders will remain (outside of appdata), I'm considering moving to FSLogix, anyone else moved from UPD to FSLogix?

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/fslogix/install-ht

Our reason is that our AV and security suite keep locking the UPD's after a user logs out and changing our suite is not possible at this point in time.

Thanks

Craig

How to deploy extensions for Chromium Edge on terminal servers

Hello everybody,

A customer runs a fairly large terminal server farm and suffers hard from lots of websites loading tons of ads, JavaScript and other unneeded content. They use Chromium Edge, which works quite fine so far on the RD servers.

How can we deploy a Chromium Edge extension such as uBlock to all (2500!) users please?

Webcam Redirection on Server 2016

$

Hello,

currently we want to use Microsoft Teams on Windows Server 2016 RDSH and try to use webcam (integrated camera) redirection from local clients.

On client side (Windows 10 1903) i checked the webcam in the local devices and ressources.

On server side i set the following gpos:

- Allow audio and video playback redirection: Enabled

- Allow audio recording redirection: Enabled

- Do not allow supported Plug and Play device redirection: Disabled

- Do not allow video capture redirection: Disabled

Also we activated the redirection in the session collection. I noticed that here is no setting equal to the video capture redirection existing.

The integrated webcam is not being redirected to the server. Unfortunately we have not usb camera to test it with usb redirection.

Is ist possible to get our planned scenario working or is it not possible to redirect the camera into the remote connection? I read that it should be possible with server 2019, but i cannot find any information about server 2016.

I thank you in advance for your answers and ideas.
