External Users are unable to open Remote Apps.

All,

I could use some help. I built out a Windows Server 2012 Server to host some specific applications for our organization.  It is a 1 server system Serving less than 50 users with no more that 4-8 connected at one time. On the server (epcrterm2012.countyes.local) the following roles reside: RDCB, RDSH, RDGW, RDWA and RDLicensing.

On epcrterm2012 I have one collection with 8 apps. This configuration has worked well for a couple of years. In the last 6 months I began to have problems with users logging in, both internally and externally due to untrusted certificates.

Last week I completely redid the environment. One mistake I initially made was I had the RDGW on a separate box, Win2012RDGate. When I redid did the environment, I put all the roles on epcrterm2012, so when I created my certs they all pointed to the epcrterm2012 and now they are all trusted.

Currently, all users within the domain can open the shorcuts to the remote apps but they cannot setup the Remote Apps and Desktop connections (RADC). User receive the following error.

If I open https://epcrterm2012/RDweb in Firefox and copy the links, the users can open them fine, but not through the RADC. They also are able to open the Remote Apps through https://epcrterm2012/RDweb.

I feel like I've read 1000 webpages and still not sure where the problem lies.

I think I'll stop here for now and see if any one can offer any insight on how to troubleshoot this.

Thanks in advance.

Session disconnecting immediately

Hello,

I currently have a test environment setup for learning and I'm experiencing an odd issue. When I RDP from one Server2012r2 to another the session disconnects immediately with an error stating another user/session has connected. There are no other users with access to my test environment that could be attempting a logon. I checked the event log and it shows my session connect, then disconnect and then another session connect with the attempt originating from 127.0.0.1. This is currently occurring on the Domain\Administrator user. It does not occur on any other user and since I mainly use the Administrator account when I'm testing different setups this is quite annoying.

I have tried spinning up another VM, joining it to the domain and enabling RDP and the issue follows when using the Administrator user on the domain on a fresh install.

Is there any way to see what application/service is creating the logon session?

Edit: I also tried changing the port used for RDP and the issue followed to verify it was not a port issue.

Thanks for any help that can be provided.

Deployment and Licences

With the upcoming Server 2016, we are planning to move away from Citrix to a fully functional RDS VDI environment which consists of 3 physical hosts with dual 8-core CPUs and 300GB of RAM. I would like to know:

i. The appropriate version/licence to get for deploying a mixture of Personal Desktops and Server session Desktops on all 3 hosts. Should it be Datacentre/Standard/Standard or all 3 hosts should be running Datacentre versions?

ii. Will it be possible to make GPUs work in Server Session Desktops. I've done a little research and found you'd need an Enterprise version of Windows 8.1 or Windows 10.

Many Thanks

Use Existing User Profile Disks with New Collection

As the title suggests, we're in the process of creating a new Remote Desktop Collection with a new Gateway / Connection Broker etc. but have the requirement to use the existing User Profile Disks.

Is anybody aware of any potential issues that this would pose? Has anybody tried this before, my hoping is that we simply add the new RD Session Host servers to the UPD folder permissions and set the path in the deployment options.

We're not going to be using the original collection that the UPDs belong to that will be decommissioned as part of the project.

Any insight on this one would be valuable and appreciated.

Thank you in advance

Windows 2012 R2 RDS: Does installing Web Access solve "can't login with expired password with NLA enabled issue?

Hi,

Have Windows 2012 R2 box with only RDS-Gateway installed on perimeter of our environment in AWS. We don't want to use app-deploy feature, just want to manage users RDPing to an internal Windows 2012 R2 box. Multiple users could be connecting at a time and need their own individual sessions.

This all works fine as long as the user's password is not expired or account checked with "Change password at next login". When this occurs, the user is not allowed to login because NLA (initial login process at the gateway) does not support password change (all well documented). I don't want to disable NLA (lowers security level).

I've read elsewhere that using Web Access component is a work around (as the web access component) is the one who presents the login page and supports password change whereas the RDP client does not.

Looking for a confirmation if this is true and if so, looking for link on how to install/configure web access component alongside rds-gateway (using powershell)

Update screen size on tablet rotation using AxMSTSCLib

Hi,

We are creating a custom rdp client using AxMSTSCLib for use on a MS Surface 4. We are having a challenge resizing the view when the tablet is rotated. When using the regular RDP the server size adjusts appropriately to display correctly on the client. in the article located at https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/enterprisemobility/2013/12/16/resolution-and-scaling-level-updates-in-rdp-8-1/ it states, "One of the changes we’ve made as part of RDP 8.1 is the addition of a new message that can be sent from the client to the server to dynamically update the resolution inside the remote session to match what is available on the client without the need to do a complete reconnect of the session," which is verified by my previously stated observation. We would like to have the actual resolution and not use smart sizing.

How can we implement the same messaging to achieve the same results using AxMSTSCLib in a .net application. I can't seem to find any reference on this. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Connecting to W7 RDP 8.0 using UDP

Hi, I have a few users that connect remotely to their machine in the office, and wanted to get UDP working for them as I have seen it provides a better experience.

After running through the RDP 8.0 upgrade process, that part of it is working. I've enabled the "User TCP and UDP" policy on both ends and disabled the firewall. However, when connecting to any W7 machine, it never uses UDP.

I'm thinking maybe this is only a function that works when connecting to a 2012R2 server? As I can get this to work no problem.

I just wanted to confirm that RDP via UDP is not possible when the host is a W7 machine?

Thanks,

Dekkar

CAL compatibility with Windows Server 2012

Hi,

My team and I are working to upgrade our domain (new physical domain, new operating system (Windows Server 2012 R2)).

While in the process of upgrading, we're wondering - we have old Windows 2000 server Device CALs that need to remain for some of our users.

My question is: when we raise the forest and domain level to Windows Server 2012, will we still be able to use those Windows 2K server device CALs or will we need to upgrade to Windows Server 2008 or higher?

NOTE: We need our Windows Server 2008 as it currently has Internet Explorer 8; we're looking into other options but for right now, this is what we need.

Thank you

Design discussion RDS role allocation

Hi Community,

a current customer situation concerns me. I´m planning a larger RDS Farm. The external access is provided via WAP. The custumer would like to have HA at all components. The complete access would be

2x WAP (DMZ) - 2x RDGW, RDWA (internal) - 2x RDCB - 30x RDSH

In my opinion there is a second option for the design like this

2x WAP (DMZ) - 2x RDGW, RDWA and RDCB -30x RDSH

The gateway is the LAN, so it's not a security incident. What do you think about the second design option?

Best regards

Robert

Access is Denied - Remote Desktop

$

I have set up my Server (2008 R2 Foundation) for remote desktop and RemoteApp as per the instructions provided by Microsoft.  I am using a single server for all functions.  When a user logs in to the Server through remote desktop, the remote desktop screen comes up and then the user immediately gets an 'Access is Denied' message.  If the user connects through RDWeb, the RemoteApps are displayed, but when the user clicks on an application, they are prompted again for their login credentials and then they get the remote desktop screen with an 'Access is Denied' screen as well.  This happens even for Administrators.

I am getting very frustrated with this as I have read many blogs and tried everything to no avail.  PLEASE help me.

Install Remote Desktop Services Failed on Windows 2012 Server

I understand RDS is not recommended on DC due to security consideration.  However since I want to play it at home, it is not much a concern.  Such scenario works fine on Windows 2008 R2.  But on Windows 2012, the RDS (session-based, have not tried VDI, but expect same result) installation always fails and is incomplete on DC.

In \Administrative Tools\Terminal Services, I only have RD Licensing Diagnoser and RD licensing manager.  The remote desktop service management service cannot be started (Error code: 0x88250001).  Is there any extra configuration needed for RDS working on Server 2012 DC or before the installation?  Thanks.

Update: this issue has been solved in Windows 2012 R2 Server.  According to http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2013/07/09/what-s-new-in-remote-desktop-services-for-windows-server-2012-r2.aspx

"Single server RDS deployment including Active Directory. We now support running our RD Connection Broker role service on the same physical instance as an Active Directory Domain Controller.  In addition, we publishedguidelines for how RD Session Host could be used without the RD Connection Broker."

The guidelines (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2833839/en-us) primarily apply to Windows 2012 Server.

Hello,

Yesterday I was looking through the host servers within the Remote Desktop Servers Collection and saw that one of the RD server was not allowing new connections to be made.

Now I am wondering if it is possible to allow new connections with a script (PowerShell or CMD)?

Note: I added a picture for reference

Unable to see the Collections Option in Remote Desktop Services in Server Manager

I am fairly new to the Windows Environment and particularly Remote Desktop Services, so I apologize in advance for my ignorance.

We've had an administrator leave our IT group and he was the one who had set up our remote desktop services/servers.  Recently we wanted to deploy another remote application and found that we were not able to see the "Collections" option in the Server Manager remote desktop services screen.  The only option listed is "servers".  However reactivating the admin's account and accessing the server as him gave us full permissions to see the Collections option and deploy another remote application.

My question would be is there a setting/group policy somewhere that is restricting other users from the gaining full access to remote desktop services in Server Manager?  I have looked all over the place on the server(and google) to see if I could find where this setting is to no avail.  Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Heda

Remote Desktop Services - Server 2012R2 - Screen flickering

$

Hello all,

We deploy Navision 2009R2 through Remote Desktop Services, the deployment works fine but once I a while, when Navision opens a second program, just a small custom made program (a single .exe) used to trasfer data into navision, the screen starts to flicker and working becomes impossible.

We have to close the entire remoteapp connection and start over.

Steps taken:

  • Server is up to date
  • Changed to compatibility mode of the program
  • Bumped up the vRAM
  • Enable/disable RemoteFX

Extra information

  • Virtual machine on ESX 5.5 (Host is HP ML380 g8)
  • Connection between server & client is 40Mbs (more than enough)
  • Frequency of the problem: less than three times a week.

What kan I do to troubleshoot this rather annoying problem and might anyone have a solution?

Kind regards,

RDS still using gracep period and ignoring licenses

$

Hi All

We have setup a Windows 2012 R2 Domain Controller as an RDS server (yes not recommended but customers needs).  Before the production environment, there was a test domain setup to test out software.  However, when the server was removed and added to the production domain, RDS wouldnt install properly so it was setup as a RDS server using powershell commands etc (they wont need the remote app features, etc).  All works ok however, the server ignores the licenses server and is continuing to use the grace period of the server (i have tried removing the registry key and rebootng but it still wont pull the licenses for users).  The server works fine but i now need it it to look to the license server and issue applied licenses.  The RDS feature wont install correctly due to the initial test domain environment we set up and there are references to it in the logs.  We cannot remove, reinstall the OS from scratch now and need a resolution to the Grace Period/licensing issue.  The customer doesnt need the remote app features and is happy using the standard RDP access for the software, etc.  Any pointers in the right direction are appreciated.  Please note:  this is a domain and not a workgroup environment.

Require 10 remote user on Win. Foundation 2012 DC

$

Hi,

I am working for a requirement to allow 10 users to remote onto Windows Foundation 2012 which is already running as Domain Controller.

Current Setup: Windows Foundation 2012 Domain Controller

My questions:

1) The Microsoft product/sales team advised me not to run RDS on my Windows Foundation 2012 Domain controller. Reason given is there might have "security issue" if both RDS + AD service is running on a same system. Is there any problem running RDS + AD on my win. foundation 2012?

2) If i were to implement RDS on my Win. Foundation 2012 DC, will there be any issue? e.g. incompatible, errors, etc?

3) understood from the microsoft sales team I have to purchase additional server to run win. server standard edition for RDS/AD - this is to separate the RDS and AD. But my concern is for such as small business company, running multiple server is not practical for them.

4) Can I run BOTH RDS and AD on my Windows Server Foundation 2012 to serve 10 remote desktop users?

Please advice.

Thank you.

2012 RDS and publishing full desktop and lockdown

Hi.

I have a lot of customers that today run thinclients against 2008/2008R2 RDS and full desktop, not remoteapps.
I'm working on a proof of concept for the 2012 RDS. I have made a Farm with one RCB and two Session Hosts. I have made a collection and set up DNS.
The farm is alive and I can log onto the servers with users.

What was missing in 2008 R2, and what is missing even more in 2012 seems to be a way to pin items to the taskbar and / or startmenu. Is it possible to publish apps to the new startmenu? Any possibility to customize it at all? So far I can't find any...
