Applications are very slow to start for some users (some sites)

I have users at two sites who complains that it takes forever to launch applications (like Excel and Outlook) on a Windows Server 2012 RDS.

Other users at other sites do not experience this problem.

I had the opportunity to troubleshoot this with one of these accounts, but when I connect from my site it is lightning fast. I also logged on as one of the users who experience this problems from yet another site, and it works very well.

I don't get it. The application launching mechanics must surely be executed at the server. I understand the feeling of slow and sluggish and so forth, due to the client, the network, etc., but why would launching  applications take a lot of time from one site and not from another?

In other words, how to troubleshoot such an issue?

Session hosts in a farm are redirecting connections not targeted to the farm's name

In a small Remote Desktop Server farm (2x 2008 R2 session hosts + 1 session broker with IP address redirection) of a large-ish domain, we noticed a change in behavior which is giving us headaches:

Previously, the RD session broker only did balance / reassign connection attempts to existing sessions when we were connecting to the RD farm's name ("rdfarm-generic"). Connecting to a specific session host by its DNS name or IP address did ensure that you were actually connecting to this specific host.

For an as of yet unknown reason, this has changed so that connecting to a session host in any possible way would get users reconnected to an existing session (if any). So a simple mstsc /v:192.168.21.85 (192.168.21.85 being the IP address of RDSH-02) gets me redirected to the other member of the farm if I have a session there already. This is what the series of events on the connection broker looks like in such a case:

Unfortunately, I cannot compare to older logs from regular backups - due to a configuration problem they were rotating away too soon to hold the users' connect entries logged early in the morning. So all I have is the disconnect entries from afternoons.

Why is it happening? How do I get the old behavior back?

FWIW, using mstsc /admin /v:192.168.21.85 does connect me to the destination server for sure, but obviously is unsuitable for users.

GPU on RDS Session Host Bare Metal (No HyperVisor) - Server 2016

Hi all,

Has anyone tried this yet?

I'm looking to buy a Dell M630 blade server with Nvidia Quadro K5100M 8GB.  If Microsofts claims are true, and that you can now (FINALLY!!!!!) use a GPU on a session host server it will solve all kinds of problems for my company.

If true, what kind of performance can I expect using the GPU mentioned.  This is only for HTML5 youtube video.

I've been using terminal services / RDS since 2000 and I am amazed that even in 2016 you can't get fluid video playback through RDP.  If Citrix and VMware can do it, I'm sure Microsoft can.  Tried Ericom Blaze and it's rubbish.  Having to install HyperV, then building a Windows 7 VM to assign a Virtual GPU is madness.  My company has 4,000 desktop computers.  Can you image the infrastructure required to move all those into VDI.  No, don't think so!

Microsoft has the technology.  Hell, I can stream a 1080p xbox game over wireless without any lag.  I think it's about time :-)

The RDP file downloaded from RDweb on some servers gives gatewayusagemethod:i:0 and some other servers gives gatewayusagemethod:i:2.for same application

I have a requirement where i am suppose to publish my application as Remote App on RDWEB. Initially the rdp file downloaded for this application had value for "gatewayusagemethod:i" as gatewayusagemethod:i:2. and the application was getting conneted and launch perfectly. Recently we tried with some servers of same configuration and it as observed that value for "gatewayusagemethod:i" as gatewayusagemethod:i:0. I googled and came to know that 0 stands for "Do not use an RD Gateway server". and 2 says "Use the RD Gateway if a direct connection cannot be made to the remote computer (i.e. bypass for local addresses)." 

Just wanted to know

1) what might have caused this change, any way or configuration to avoid this change keepgatewayusagemethod:i value consistent? As in future i will have to create the RDP file programatically.

2) what impact will i have if i use gatewayusagemethod:i:4 value ? will my launch be impacted on any of the servers? ,Can we use the Remote app even if we dont use RD Gateway??

Replicate application settings to user profile on terminal server.

I installed SAP Logon client on a Windows 2012 RDS server.  In order for the SAP client to connect, the SAPLOGON.INI file has to be available in \\server1\c$\users\username\appdata\roaming\sap\common of every user's profile.  

How do I address this issue?

Remote Desktop Gateway CAL license

Hi ,

I have set up a remote desktop gateway role in windows 2012 r2 datacenter server. I have configured 20VM for connecting through gateway server. I am only using 2 session for each of 20 VM. Do i need to purchase Remote desktop cal license for remote desktop gateway server. Its just proxy the traffic right?

WMI RequiresEncryption flag on TS-Gateway

We are running TS-Gateway on Server2008 R2 with an Remote desktop session host farm of three Server 2008R2 servers.

On the gateway server i'm seeing eventid errors code 5605 WMI with the

The root\cimv2\TerminalServices namespace is marked with the RequiresEncryption flag. Access to this namespace might be denied if the script or application does not have the appropriate authentication level. Change the authentication level to Pkt_Privacy and run the script or application again.

Also we are using SCOM 2007 R2 on all servers for monitoring, but this event occurs only on this server, i've checked the following articlehttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc727103(WS.10).aspx but i cannot find what script or process is causing the error. Also there is very few information about this event, is there anyone with the same experience?

Deployed printers wont stay set as default

Using RDS 2012 R2 server, we are deploying 4 or so printers via group policy.

When a user sets them to default printer and logs off, when they log back on the default has changed to another non mapped printer (local printer).

Do not set default client printer to be default printer in a session is enabled in GPO.

Tested the same outcome on a 2008 r2 non rds server as well.

RD Web Access 2012 R2 and Smartcard Authentication.

Hello,

I have question for my infrastructure. 

I have the Web Access on a server then i have another server as Connexion Broker, and 2 others servers as RD HS.

My question is how can i configure the web access to accept smartcard authentication and also name hint on certificate.

My second question is for the connexion broker, when i am connected on the web access, i see the collection. Then i click on the collection but the system demand authentication. Is it possible to configure that to have SSO when I click on the collection.

Unable to configure Remote Desktop Services

While following this link's instructions ( https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee907376%28v=ws.10%29.aspx ), when I get down to #4 , ( In thePermissions for <Name> private keys dialog box), I have no "NETWORK SERVICE" listed.  And If I try to add it, it says "unable to save permission changes - Access Denied".

Basically I'm having trouble getting RDS to work and this issue is just the first of many errors I'm  getting.

If anyone has some suggestions, I would appreciate it.

PS: I am logged in as administrator.

Grant Access to RD Collection for Users in Seperate Domain using Domain Trusts

Hi Guys,

We have two domains on our network and we would like to Grant users from our Old Domain access to the RD Collection that we have created on our new network. Every time we try to add the users groups we get the error seen in the screen capture below.

Exceptions: The network path was not found

The domain trust is in place and verified and we are able to browse the domains and able to add the groups to local server groups. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this or how we can go about resolving it.

I have company internal web services many services with diffent accounts on same host but with different ports:

But IE11 save web credentials the same (last or last saved)

Clean unused ghost VDI Desktops

Hello,

we have an Windows Server 2012 RDP Collection.

In the configuration, you can count up the VDI name.

The problem is, if i create a new vdi desktop and i will get error, the name will count up anyway.

So i have a hole between die names, for example VDI-02, next is VDI-04.

Where can i clean up the ghost VDI's?

Virtual Channels not working in RDS VDI Pool, but do work in RDS Session Host.

Are virtual channels supported in the VDI pool deployments?  If not, is there a workaround?  I've written code and tested it successfully in a session host, but upon initialization with a VDI pool the plug-in disconnects right away versus remaining open waiting for a connection.  I don't know if dynamic virtual channels offer a solution.

Add Back a rebuilt RD Virtualization Host server AND it's RD Desktop Collection to RDS service

Hi I ran into problem when my Windows 2012 R2 RD Virtualization Host server "Host-A" crashed and I had to rebuild the O/S again. Joined Domain, Installed Hyper-V Role then the RD Virtualization Host Role.

As this RDVH "Host-A" is hosting my Personal Managed Desktop collections of Win 10 VMs, I had to also register back the desktop VMs. It also hosts some server VMs, one of which is the RDS server VM that was managing this  "Host-A".

Problem is in my all-in-one RDS server (Connection Broker, Web Access, RD Gateway roles in 1 VM) now cannot recognize the desktops in the RDHV and the collection shows as 0 desktop!

RDS also can't properly recognize the RDVH "Host-A", I believe some config is needed but I don't know what to do.

Appreciate if anyone can help give the instructions to recover the RDVH host and the RD Collection back to the RDS service. Thanks!

Audio stop working when user locks their terminal session

I'm receiving reports from users that when they are logged into a 2008 R2 terminal server audio playback stops working when the user locks their windows terminal session. The only way for it to resume working is for them to log out and log back into the terminal server. I've not been able to find anyone else having this issue and was wondering if anyone here may have run into this issue before.

They also reported the issue does not happen on a 2003 Terminal Server.

2012 Rd RDWeb Personal Desktop

I would like to demo RDWeb as a solution for connecting to user desktops.  I don't need a virtual solution, I would just like to use the service to allow a small group of users to connect to their desktop, easily.

Is it possible:

- only show Connect to a remote PC

- list desktop(s) available to logged on user

- user log directly into a specific desktop without another login

How to connect to 2012 R2 RDS Collection via Netbios Name?

Just set up a 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Farm:

RDCB = Connection Broker, Licensing, Web Access
RDSH1 = Session Host
RDSH2 = Session Host
RDSH3 = Session Host
RDSH4 = Session Host

Did not setup a Gateway Server because users will connect to it via LAN only.  The users will not use RDWeb.  All users will connect via Thin Client or RDP Client.

How do I setup the Collection so that anyone who uses mstsc.exe can connect to the Farm via Netbios name "RDS" instead of rds.domain.local?

Do I need a Gateway Server for this?
