W2016 RDSH - Broker (required ?)

As far as I understand, the broker service is required to get some RDS management tools to appear within "Server manager"

Apparently, since W2012, Remote Desktop Manager is gone

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/20684.management-how-to-changes-for-rds-in-windows-server-2012-and-2012r2.aspx

What if I have a single RDSH server ? Do I really need that "broker" thing ?

Also, the "Remote control" tab formerly found  the"Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration" is now part of the User properties in AD. What if I want different setup across different computers / RDSH / RemoteApp servers ?

Multiple completely separate RDS Farms in one AD

Hi,

Is it possible to have 2 completely separate RDS Farms in the same AD domain without them interfering with eachother? This is a temorary solution because of a migration. I need to add a 2nd RDS Farm, consisting of 3 servers (2x session hosts and combined RD gateway/broker/license server).

But there already is a similar Farm in this AD with it's own session hosts and brokers/gw.

Can i just add the new Farm on new/separate servers, or will this overwrite something in the existing config/AD. Ofc the servers and farm etc are all named differently.

Task you are trying to do cannot be completed because remote desktop services is currently busy

I have an odd issue connecting thin clients to a new 2012r2 RDS Farm.

I have ~200 Wyse thin clients using remote apps to a farm of 5 Term Servers..  Connections work fine, no issues with connectivity.

We are wanting to use a pure RDS environment, so we have provisioned a 2 server farm for testing.  All connectivity is internal.  Thin Clients are in Appliance Mode, so they power on, user logs in, Client starts RDP to server.

At first connection, the trust warning is provided.  If we check the box to not display the message again, this first connection is made, user logs in.  All is good.

When the user logs out, connection is cleared from the collection, and client powers down.

Next login, user logs into client, RDP session starts, message "Task you are trying to do can't be completed because remote desktop services is currently busy".  Note that there is only this test user connecting to servers.  It shows that user has logged into the collection.  At this point, we have to log the user out of the collection, and have them reboot the client.

Now at the above mentioned Trust warning, if we do NOT select the "do not ask..." box, and it displays the warning, we select continue, it makes the connections without issue.  So we only receive the message if we select the "Do not ask for future connections" button.

I am at a loss.  I am NOT a term server guy, and my consultant that has done our original setup here, and the new setup is stumped as well.

Any help appreciated!

James

Windows 2012 R2 RDS - Certificate mismatch questions

$

Hi,

I hope someone can help me with this. Here's my setup :

- RDSH1 : Broker, Licence and Web Access server
- RDSH2 : Session Host server
- RDSH3 : Session Host server
- Internal domain : domain.intr
- External name : rds.something.ca

Our certificate is not a wildcard but it includes the "rds.something.ca" name. I tried using the "Set-RDPublishedName" script by entering the "rds.something.ca" name but i still had issues.

My question is about the DNS configuration needed to make this work. I already have a "rds.something.ca" DNS entry in a "something.ca" lookup zone that points to my Broker server. Do i need additional entries in this lookup zone for all the servers ? (ex. : "RDSH1.something.ca", "RDSH2.something.ca" and "RDSH3.something.ca").

And if so, do these need to be included in my certificate since it's not a wildcard ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks !

Remove CAL pack from TS Licensing server

Hi,

I've got a customer with three licensing servers... WS2003, WS2008 and WS2012.

Recently they bought 20 CAL per device 2016 licenses. During activation proccess there was a mistake and those CAL where installed on WS2003 Licensing Server, instead of WS2008 server...

I've been trying to talk with Clearing House and tech support to remove those licenses from WS2003 licensing server... And no one knew how to do it...

The only solution they gave to me was migrating licenses from WS2003 to WS2008, but I guess that proccess migrates all the licenses, and you need to deactivate WS2003 server... That's not an option to this client....

Can anyone provide me some help?

Thank you very much, and sorry for my english...

Problem with printer drivers

Hi,

I have a Windows 2003 Terminal Server server. Clients connects to it with RDP, to use Office applications and view PDF Files. The server has a number of different printer drivers installed. For example:

- HP Laserjet 500

- HP color Laserjet 200

- HP Universal Printer Driver PCL5.

And about ten more drivers.

Clients connect to server and have diferent printers, each with each driver. The problem is that, whatever model of printer the client has, with whatever driver it has installed, the mapped printer in the server takes the HP 500 Driver. So every single printer mapped in the server, is being mapped with the HP 500 driver, despite the server has installed the correct driver for all the printers.

How can I achieve that if I use in a client a printer which driver is installed on the server, the server maps the printer with the correct driver instead of the HP 500?

Hi

Once a month I need to report to Microsoft the number of Per User CAL licenses used on 100 Servers with Remote Desktop Services Licensing installed.

Is there a way to automate the collection of this information with script by importing a .CSV file?

Remote Desktop Service Session Host - Server 2012 R2

Hi

I have a customer who would like to be able to run a 3D application on their Remote Desktop Session Host environment.
The have VMware 6.0 running on the hardware and are running two RDS Session Hosts servers on top of that.

I found that RemoteFX is supported by Server 2012 R2 with Nvidia K1,K2,K5000,K6000 cards. But I have only found one article that says that it isn't possible to use RemoteFX inside a RDS Session Hosts and it's only for RDS VDI.
Link to article https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/enterprisemobility/2014/06/06/understanding-and-evaluating-remotefx-vgpu-on-windows-server-2012-r2/

Is that still true?

Remote Desktop Homedrive not being mapped

$

Hello,

I'm running a Windows 2016 Remote Desktop PoC. When the Remote Desktop profile location is specified in the Active Directory the Home drive is not being mapped in the session. Any idea how this is possible? It works for Windows 2008 R2 and 2012 R2.

I've checked and there is no DNS issue of any kind and I can map the drive manually.

When I use a GPO to map the Remote Desktop home drive everything works as expected, however this is not possible since we have users with TS home drives in different locations.

I'm running the latest January update, DCs and AD Schema is 2012 R2.

Thanks

RDS Profiles not Roaming on 2016 Servers (when using AD profile setting), but works with GPO

$

Hey Everyone,

I'm experimenting with 2016 RDS, as I want to upgrade our 2012R2 Session Host servers. I have 2012R2 domain controllers (if that matters).

I am noticing that roaming RDS profiles isn't working at all on my 2016 RDS session host servers. A user logs in and gets a local profile, and when they log out, the profile isn't uploaded at all. It's basically just a regular local profile. I have the field set to \\fileserver\rdsprofiles in AD. This has worked fine in RDS in 2003, 08R2, and 2012R2.

However, if I create a GPO and set the profile location that way (Computer - Policies - Administrative Templates - Windows Components - RDS - Session Host - Profiles - Set path for Remote Desktop Services Roaming User Profile), roaming profiles are created on the share and everything works fine, and I can see a new .v6 profile being created. Logging in and out roams the profile properly.

Any thoughts as to why? Has the AD 'Remote Desktop Services Profile' attribute been depreciated for 2016?

I have tried lots of troubleshooting, deleting profiles, new shares, etc, I can't seem to get it to work with the AD attribute (but works fine when set with GPO).

EDIT: Tried this in a homelab setup as well (all 2016 servers), and same thing - only the GPO setting takes effect.

We cannot find a solution on issues.Printers.

Hi!

Infrastructure:

- 2 Domain Controller - Windows Server 2012r2 (1 in Azure, 1 in another datacenter)

- Print Servers - Windows Server 2012r2

- Terminal Server - Windows Server 2012r2

We cannot find a solution on issues.

 Question 1.

At user terminal sessions can be seen all the installed printer.

Requires disable all installed printers.

 Question 2.

Implement specific printer connection, to a specific user / group.

 Question 3.

On the term server cannot install a network printer

--------------------------------------

We have a terminal server is removed from all of our offices at 1000 km.
All the printers installed over TCP / IP port as a local on the terminal server. Here are my opinions to be debated:
1. I do not want users to see the office And in his terminal session printers that are physically located in the office of B.'s awkward to see in the list of printers in the same Ward huge list of printers instead of the two that are in the office A and B are used for printing office staff A.
2. This is an exception to paragraph 1. I want to A office users can install any currently available to them to install printers. For example, the office printers B. So it happens that the need to send a print file from one office to another. It happens, but rarely.
3. Taking into account paragraphs 1 and 2, I would like to do, so that users can install itself in any terminal session printers. For example, all employees of the office A set yourself two printers, which are in their office. But! one of the employees of this office will set not only these two printer, but also to the printer from the office B, since it is often necessary to print on it.

win 2012 R2 Licensing Diagnosis error

hello

I have a problem with License Diagnosis tool.

My Terminal Services works fine, everywhere I check I see that my CAL licenses are installed.

Meanwhile License Diagnosis shows message:

"the remote desktop session host server is in per user licensing mode and no redirector mode

but license server ServerName.domain.com does not have any installed licenses with the following attributes:

Product version: Windows Server 2012

Licensing mode: Per User

License type: RDS CALs"

but in the same window below i have:

details of license server configuration:

License Type: RDS CALs per User

Version: windows Server 2012

Installed :5

Available:0

So is there a bug in Licensing Diagnosis ?

How can I check for sure if everything is OK with my Terminal Services ?

Maybe some PowerShell script ?

thanks in advance for any help

no rdp anymore to w2012r2 server (an internal error has occured)

Hello,
I have a windows 2012 R2 Server (virtual on VMWare) where I cannot RDP anymore. I did this for some years now, and do RDP to dozens of other servers on a daily base. But this server (btw. it is our MS Dynamics CRM Server) instantly does not accept RDP anymore. The problem is I instantly, within a second, get "An internel error has occured" popup when I try to connect. Clearing cached credntials, disabling shared ressources etc... nothing helps. The same also occurs when I try to RDP from another computer which never had a settion to this server. Disabling/Enabling RDP on the server did not help also, neither reboot.

Any idea what can be a solution to solve this issue? It is quite inconvenient since I have to go through vsphere client console all the time now...
I am talking about the build-in RDP, not Remote Desktop Server for Terminal Serives or whatever. And the error comes so fast, as it is a response from the server, and no timeout etc. Firewall was checked also, telnet on rdp port is possible.

kind regards,

Remote Desktop - user account environment settings are ignored at logon

$

I recently purchased a Dell T130 server with Windows Server 2016 Standard, and installed the Remote Desktop Services role on the server.  I set up a new user, checked the "Start the following program at logon" option on the environment tab of the user account, and entered the program file name and start in path.  However, when the user logs into the server via the RDP/RDS client, the environment settings are ignored.  The program does not start, and the session logs the user onto a desktop, which I don't want.

Here are some things I tried which haven't helped...

1. Made the user a member of the "administrators" group.
2. Added my application to the published remote apps list
3. Enabled the "Allow remote start of unlisted programs" in the Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services/Remote Desktop Session Host/Connections group policy
4. Disabled the "Always show desktop on connection" in the Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services/Remote Desktop Session Host/Remote Session Environment group policy
5. Installed the "Windows Server Essentials Experience" on the server
6. Logged onto the server with a local user instead of a domain user
7. Uninstalled Remote Desktop Services roles and reinstalled them

How do I get Windows Server 2016 to launch the program configured on the environment tab of the user account when the user logs on to a Remote Desktop session?

When continue, it fails to connect

Thank you.

Hello, I have two single user Server 2016 RDS CALS, how do I use these on Server 2012 (Non R2)?  I had to set up on this version because it was the license that we had.  I know the License server is working properly; I entered the 2012 5 pack CAL no problem.

Enabling Desktop Experience on 2012 R2 Terminal Server

I've got a 2012 R2 RDS server that I'd like to enable the Desktop Experience for my users to be able to view pictures in Photo Viewer instead of Paint.

Are there any downsides to doing this? Anything that would break an existing RDS installation and/or user profiles?
