ADS & DNS Server with Hyper-V

$

Dear All

I have the following setup.

1. Host Server which is also ADS server and DNS Server. This is the physical server. WS2012R2 is the Base OS.

2. 4 x Hyper-V Guest Servers running WS2012R2 Std Edition configured  onto this server.

3. One of the Hyper-V Servers is a Terminal Client Server. We have about 50 Thin Clients connecting to this server. Another is the application Server.

4. The Thin Clients have Win7 OS embedded on them. The Thin Clients connect to TS server first and then they can access the application server.

Problem :

Sometimes when Thin Clients try to log in ; they get message TS-Server could not be located ; i.e. the TS-Server is not accessible. But when the Thin Client is rebooted

Some times the problem goes away after a few minutes. Without doing anything.

Sometimes we have to reboot the TS Server ( Virtual).

Sometimes we have to shutdown all servers and reboot the physical host server and restart everything all over again. But the problem comes up again in next 2-3 days.

We have installed all the windows updates and patches and we do it weekly for all servers.

Any suggestions ?

Fail to create virtual desktop collection

I go with RDS quick install, and the wizard always fail at the last step saying "unable to create the virtual desktop collection. The process cannot access the file "\sever\RDVirtualDesktopTemplate" because it's being used by another process.

What's this problem? That folder was created by this wizard and I don't see other process that is using it. Also this is installed on my domain controller that has DHCP and DNS installed too.  Does that affect the RDS installation?

I do not find this option.
Configure Remote Control of Remote Desktop Services Sessions.

This link (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771538%28v=ws.11%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396) is about the process in Win server 2012. And here (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725700(v=ws.11).aspx) remotely control a user session.

Basic theme corrupt, black boxes in apps when connected

Hi....

On one of our Windows 2012 Remote Desktop Host servers we have the following problem.

--Not working example:

THE PROBLEM

-- Working example:

WORKING

---

So black boxes all over the place. When I troubleshooted this as admin I found that switching the theme to "Windows" under Windows standard theme  made the black boxes go away. But switching to the "Windows Basic" them makes them appear again.

So:

-- How do I fix the basic theme? As this is the theme regular users uses and they have no option of changing theme. RemoteApp technology is used.

-- Or possibly, as I think it works fine with the "Windows" theme, how do I apply this to all users logging in to the server?

Also, I have tried to find a solution on this on the forum, the internet and be general troubleshooting. No errors in the event log in Windows......

Looking forward to hear from you. Thank you in advance.

2012R2 - Set up Web Access on a non-domain member / workgroup in single-firewall perimeter network

We wish to use RDS solely to make RemoteApps available to remote users (primarily via web site, as they're currently used to Citrix interface). Session Host and Connection Broker roles are installed on 2012R2 domain servers, however I've put Web access on a non-domain-member in the perimeter network.

I believe the Remote Desktop Gateway role is not necessary for this project, is that correct?

Also, when adding the Web Access role, I notice that it's not possible to point to the internal LAN server with the Connection Broker role - even though all firewall ports are open for this test. Is it possible to authenticate through WA role on a non-domain-member?

All access between the two servers is open.  I can see from one to the other with ping, RDP, HTTP, WMI, etc.

Thanks in advance for any information or resources.

W2016 RDSH - Broker (required ?)

As far as I understand, the broker service is required to get some RDS management tools to appear within "Server manager"

Apparently, since W2012, Remote Desktop Manager is gone

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/20684.management-how-to-changes-for-rds-in-windows-server-2012-and-2012r2.aspx

What if I have a single RDSH server ? Do I really need that "broker" thing ?

Also, the "Remote control" tab formerly found  the"Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration" is now part of the User properties in AD. What if I want different setup across different computers / RDSH / RemoteApp servers ?

RDC GP

Server 2012 R2 in a education setting. We have a few teachers (not all) that need access to our cameras on the server. I was just going to add a RDC icon on the desktop and configure that to run a program but on Win 10, the programs tab is gone. So i edited the .rdp file and added alternateshells:s:"C:\Program Files\Blue Iris 4\BlueIrisAdmin.exe" but this does not work either. So i made a user GP:

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Remote Session Environment\Start a program on connection

Entered the program location and start in fields. Run gpupdate /force and restart the client PC. I don't see where either in RDC or "all apps" or using RDC to connect to the server that hosts the camera software.

I have removed the authenticated users and added the teachers that need access. In delegation, i also added auth users with read.

RDS more active sessions than licenses

$

hi all,
*********************************
Windows Server 2008 R2
Workgroup configuration
Remote Desktop Services
License program: Volume license
Total licenses: 6
*********************************

What is strange is that I can see 9x active sessions on the server, so do not know how this is possible.

I cannot run a report as it is Workgroup environment. Grace period has ended.

When you logon to RD License Manager I can see the "Issued" column as "-". I would be expecting the RDS server issuing the available 6 licenses.

License Diagnosis shows: "did not identify any licensing problems for the Remote Desktop Session Host Server."

Nothing on event viewer to suggest misconfiguration or anything.

I am really confused as to how 9x active connections can be established on a 6x license node.

Assistance is much appreciated.

RDS Licensing (remove a few licenses)

Hi,

I have been running RDS for a number of years in a school where we have approximately 150 computers accessing Terminal Servers using RDS Device CAL's.
These classroom pc's have been upgraded and no longer need to access the TS's.
I would like to reduce our device cal count to save licensing costs but cannot see how to remove a number of licenses in licmgr.exe (on Win Server 2008 R2)
I would like to keep roughly 20 licenses.
Is it a case of deactivating the server, then reactivating and installing the correct number of licenses or is there another way?

Thanks
Gavin

What is the maximum of simultaneous session supported by Terminal server?

$

I want to know using windows TS, what can be the max # of simultaneous session supported by a single TS.

I have a solution which is sized by TS, 5000$ for a single TS, with 2100 users and standard support to be 50 / TS I would require 42. That would be too costly.

I want to know using a high performance machine with xeon server 32 GB RAM would make any difference?

Remote Desktop Services - Report Automation of Terminal Services License

Hi

Once a month I need to report to Microsoft the number of Per User CAL licenses used on 100 Servers with Remote Desktop Services Licensing installed.

Is there a way to automate the collection of this information with script by importing a .CSV file?

Tks.

Remote Desktop Service Session Host - Server 2012 R2

Hi

I have a customer who would like to be able to run a 3D application on their Remote Desktop Session Host environment.
The have VMware 6.0 running on the hardware and are running two RDS Session Hosts servers on top of that.

I found that RemoteFX is supported by Server 2012 R2 with Nvidia K1,K2,K5000,K6000 cards. But I have only found one article that says that it isn't possible to use RemoteFX inside a RDS Session Hosts and it's only for RDS VDI.
Link to article https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/enterprisemobility/2014/06/06/understanding-and-evaluating-remotefx-vgpu-on-windows-server-2012-r2/

Is that still true?

Kind Regards

Bug: RemoteApp in Server 2016 sets C:\windows\system32 as "current directory" no matter where the app is stored

Hi

All applications I publish for RemoteApp on Windows Server 2016 gets "Current directory" set to "C:\Windows\system32\", no matter where I have the application (only tried with applications stored on C:\ fyi)

This is the environment-settings all applications I've published on a Server 2016 gets (besides the command line ofc).

My current solution is to use a cmd-script to enter the correct directory and then start it and just publish the .cmd-script.

Win 2012 R2 - Passthrough user locale settings

$

Hi

We are currently testing out RDS on Win 2012 R2, publishing a couple of applications to our users.

It works great in general, but since the users are spread across different countries that use different regional settings like date format, decimal seperators etc., this becomes a challenge as I cannot seem to figure out how to get passthough of client-side regional settings for each user.

Can anyone point me in the right direction here?

Thanks in advance.

Enable multiple user remote desktop

Hi

I installed one windows 2012 server in the company. I didn't install Windows Remote Desktop components. I simply went to local group policy-> Windows components> Remote desktop service->Remote desktop session host->connections and enabled 6 sessions in "Limit number of connections"

The server is domain joined. so my questions:

1. Will it accept more than 2 active remote access

2. Do i need additional license?
