Server 2016 - RDS Default Printer not working

Hi All,

I have recently upgrade my server from 2012 to 2016. However, we encounter an issue regarding the default printer.

When my software calls for the default printer to print, it is printed to the server's default printer instead. But when i checked from the "Devices and Printers", the client's PC default is selected.

I have already disabled the easy print in the group policy setting.

RDS Server Won't Issue User CALS after licensing DB rebuild.

Hello,

I have this single Windows Server 2016 and have about 4 users connecting to it through RDP.

This server have all the roles (AD and the others needed for RDS).

I purchased 4 RDS user cals. I installed those and it started issuing licenses. By mistake I was logged in as Administrator without the /admin flag and it assigned one to that user. Since the GUI wouldnt let me revoke, based on a few articles around I stopped the RD license service and wiped clean the lserver folder inside the windows32. Started the service again, reinstalled the CALS and now I have the CALS available 4/4 and is not issuing any of those again to the users connecting.

I'm still on grace period which is why I suspect it is not disconnecting the users.

After that I have tried rebuild the licensing database which does basically the same thing I did manually  and still no luck.

The licensing diagnostic tool puts all green and show the 4 licenses available.

There are a few errors that have always been there about the licensing unable to join the AD and something about connection broker in the logs but it was working fine with those errors since the licensing server and mode is being enforced by group policy.

So what could be the issue? I also noticed it issues licenses to users as long as those user were never issued CALS before the wipe of the lserver folder.

Windows 2016 RDS - Start Menu Not Working - get-appxpackage returns nothing

I'm having an issue on a single RDS 2016 server at the moment where the start menu doesn't open.

I've gone though lots of steps including sfc /scannow  (No errors)   DISM with all the options (No Errors)

I've cleared the Registry in firewall policy\restricted services\configurable\system.

I believe the issue is that I don't have any applications registered in the get-appxpackage at all, it just comes back blanks where as on working machines I get a list of about 15.

I've tried to install the packages by hand using variations of

Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy\AppxManifest.xml -Verbose

This returns the following;

Add-AppxPackage : Deployment failed with HRESULT: 0x80073CF6, Package could not be registered.
An internal error occurred with error 0x800705AA. See http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=235160 for help diagnosing app deployment issues.

I can't seem to get the system to re-register those applications!

Open to any suggestions?  (Please no, have you restarted the server!)

This happens on all users including local admin and new accounts.  Happens in Safe and Clean Boot.

Thanks.

Terminal Services/RDT connections began failing Jul 19

Was notified tonight by client that attempts to connect via RDT/TS were failing from all workstations.  An attempt to login gives:

Unable to connect to remote PC. Please verify Remote Desktop is enabled, the remote PC is turned on and available on the network, then try again.

This is Server 2012 Std.  Windows Event logs don't show any apparent problems.  Services restarted one by one.  Then a reboot of the server.  I can RDT on the LAN to this server, but not via public network.  Internet provider is Comcast.  Router shows both an IPV6 and an IPV4 public WAN address; we have always connected with IPV4, but neither IPV6 (as per address modifications found on Internet for RDT client).  Reboot did not help.

So, I'm stuck on this.  We've been seen IPV6 issues on other networks lately, so I'm suspicious it is related but I don't see how that should be a problem.

At this point I'm pretty desperate as I will have a good number of users trying to connect in a few hours.  So, ANY suggestion that might help will be greatly appreciated.  Weird problem, thanks in advance.

Questions about licensing and CALs

Hi everyone

Over the past few days I've been all over the internet but I was unable to find out definite answers to my questions so I thought it best to ask them here :)

Background

On Microsoft Azure I have hosted a Virtual Machine running Windows Server 2019. The purpose of the virtual machine is to host a suite ofin-house applications and allow various clients to log into the system to use the applications. For example: installing a student profile system on a central server and allowing lecturers to access the application.

Currently I have set up 7 different user accounts and given them remote access privileges. The server allows will allow 5 concurrent remote sessions at any given time. To enable concurrent sessions I have activated the "Remote Desktop Services" role along with the 120-day licensing grace period.

Now for my questions:

Question 1: CAL's - Which ones?

As far as I understand enabling more than two concurrent users requires the purchase of Client Access licenses (CAL's). Since the users will always remote into the server externally from their own machines, which CAL type will I have to purchase? I have seen Microsoft offers an RDS CAL, is this the one I have to use?

Question 2: CAL's - How many?

Since I have 7 users but only allow 5 users simultaneous access, how many CAL's should I purchase?

Question 3: CAL's - Validity period

Do CAL's have an expiration date or can I buy them once?

Question 4: CAL's - Transfer between servers

Should it happen that I delete the current virtual machine and create a new one, will it possible to transfer the CAL's between the servers?

Thank you all!

No SSO for RDP in RD WebAccess

I have enabled SSO for RD Webaccess. I will not ask for my credentials in the future.Only when I click on an application then comes the following message.

Why does RD Webaccess not pass the credentials to the RDP session?

certain web pages are slow

We are running an RDS 2016 farm and are having issues with certain websites mainly ones with media but also the office.com login page loading very jittery/slow and if it has media it tends to freeze up.

Server CPU and ram are not close to being maxed out and we have an Nvidia P2000 GPU. The GPU shows it hasn't gone above 40% on the gpu.

Windows apps such as file explorer, word, excel are not slow.

Any ideas on what would cause this?

Thank yo u

RemoteAPP after windows 10 update 1803 are slow and right mouse button is not responding (it reacts only sometimes)

Hi,

our workstations with Windows 10 pro are in this weekend updated to version 1803. For main system we use RemoteAPP aplications on Windows server 2012R2 (Windows server 2012R2 is full updated). After update on client station are RemoteAPP slower, and  right mouse button is unresponsive, or react verly long time...

It is a big problem for us.

PS: after replace mstsc.exe and mstscax.dll from older version Windows 10 is all OK. but this is not a solution.

Thanks.

File Explorer sporadically not responding

Hi guys,

My server is on MS Azure is running on Windows Server 2016.

One of the users sporadically has her File Explorer not responding.

It lasts for a minute or so and then File Explorer comes back to normal.

The server is patched with the latest updates and only half of its 16 virtual cores and 64GB RAM is used.

Tried to enable "Launch folder windows in a separate process" - No difference.

Just wondering if there any way to avoid profile rebuild.

Mstsc to terminal server with a specific user Error : The Group Policy Client service failed the sign-in "Access is denied"

Hello,

I have this weird problem that when I am trying to connect to a terminal server with a specific user (let's say "Anna") I am getting this error :

The Group Policy Client service failed the sign-in "Access is denied"

and if I am trying to connect with a different user it's working fine.

anyone have an idea what can cause this error?  (tried already : checking if there is a temp profile .bak in the registry and C:\users\%username% not showing the user profile).

Remote Desktop Services is not providing License trought from Trusted Domain

Hi,

I have a server on a trusted core network (RDS.SECURE.NET) that is trying to retrieve TS or RDS Per User license from a server in a trusted domain (RDSLIC.DOMAIN.NET). From Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration, the RDS.SECURE.NET server is able to connect to the RDSLIC server throught a DOMAIN.NET account (Credentials and Connectivity are both avaiable with 1500 licenses) but in the event viewer of the RDS server the following event Appear:

Log Name: System

Source: TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager

Event ID: 1130

Level: Warning

The RDP connection to this server are now unavaiable. I've checked local firewalls on both servers and they are ok. The firewall between the two networks are not showing any denied packet from RDS to RDSLIC.

What else could I checked to let the service working properly? Is it possible to retrieve RDS/TS License through a trusted domain?

Thank you for your help.

Issue with one special RemoteApp

Hey everyone,

i am using an Windows Server 2016 to publish a few remote apps. All of them are working, except one.

The behaviour: When i try to log on (same if i use the rdp file or via Web Access) i get the prompt for the user and it says starting. I also get a confirmation in the task bar, that I am connecte with the Remote Server. After a few seconds the "starting window" disappears and nothing happens.

It's a Java application, but i have another Java application that is working.

That's what i found in the eventlog (TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager) on the Server:

> Begin Session arbitration...Session ID 5 > Session 5 has been disconnected, reason Code 0 > Session 4 has been disconnected, reason Code 5 > RDS: Session reconnection successfull Session ID 4 > End Session arbitration... Session ID5 > Session 4 has been disconnected by session 4 > %s from %s Session 4 has been disconnected, reason code 11 > RDS: Session has been disconnected...Session ID 4

Any Ideas?

Kind Regards, Matthias

Limiting Cut and Pasting files to specific users on RDS

Hi, I'm able to restrict specific users to use cut and paste text through RDS on an RDS Collection, however I'm not able to do this with drive redirection.  The goal is to only allow specific users to cut and paste files through RDS but disabling "Do not allow drive redirection" from Group Policy is set at computer settings and will give everyone the ability to cut and paste files.  Is there is method to achieve this without giving everyone this ability but to only specific users in an AD Group?

Kevin.

Only allow some users to access redirected local drives within RDS Session

Hello

I'm looking for a solution to allow (or block) a certain security group of users to get their local drives mapped through their RDS session.

I'm aware you can do this through an RDS CAP, however this is not suitable for our environment as we are using a dual factor authentication method which prevents using the RD Gateway Manager.

I'm also aware you can enable or disable this for all users (either through the RDS session configuration option) or a computers-based group policy:
Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Device and Resource Redirection

However as this is a computers policy I cannot bind this to a users sec group.

Any ideas please?

Many thanks

Installed RDS on all 3, from the connection broker I created a server pool in Server manager and added all three.  Install the RDS role and assigned the roles and setup went fine.  From the Connection broker I see all the servers and the session hosts  but when I go the the session hosts, they act like nothing installed  What am I missing?

All possible remote controlling in WIndows

So to get the flavours right. Correct me if am mistaken or left some feature out.
Cause up until recently all of the following 4 items were spaghetti in my head.

A user starts an RDS (terminal services session into a server to run an app) . TYPE 1 RDS

An administrator can monitor that session via the ADUC user properties tab "Remote control tab" enabled. TYPE 2 Shadowing?

An administrator can also remote control the desktop that the user is running while he is connecting to an RDS. TYPE 3 Computer enabled remote control (In system properties)

A help desk analyst can do Remote Assistance on that same desktop in Type 3 sharing the same desktop. TYPE 4 Remote assistance.

Does this make sense?
