$

hello all

i need to upgrade my remote app server from 2008 to 2016,

and i need to create 2 rds servers and 1 broker server.

so i started  from here:

i choose "quick start" and after that its installed me "rd connection broker "rd web access" and "rd session host"

now i am thinking if to installing the local programs that i need, and publish them.

and for finish i will clone that machine

after that i will create another server that he should to be the broker (if its necessary?)

my question is, its ok to do like that ?

and if its ok to work with 3 broker servers? because in a regular ts servers (not remote app. i remember that need only 1 broker server)

tnx

Disconnecting RDP Session Causing Excel C++ Macro to Pause

$

Hi,

I'm kicking off an extensive Excel macro on a network machine via Remote Desktop Connection that takes roughly 50 hours to complete. The macro VB calls a DLL file to execute a chunk of code in C++ (I did not build it and am not well versed).  Running the macro in an active session works fine, but if I disconnect and return a good time later, I can tell the macro has made zero progress since when I disconnected from the session--I can tell from status bar communication in Excel.  Once I reconnect my session, the macro continues running like I'd never left and no error messages or code execution breaks messages to be found.

It gets weirder--I have 4 options of VMs to choose from, all of which have identical specs (Windows 10, 64-bit Office, 64-bit OS).  The macro will continue to run when I'm disconnected on only ONE machine. The only difference I can see on the one machine that's successfully running the macro, is that it's the least recent to have been rebooted (and therefore updated) of the lot.

I do not have local admin rights on any of the machines. Any incite would be greatly appreciated.

I'll caveat that I'm kind of a layman in tech speak; I apologize if I chose the wrong categories to post on.

Remote desktop services goes "stale"

Hi there, we are experiencing an issue where we connect to one of our realtime machines and randomly (this happened about a week apart from one another) after you have authenticated, it just goes black and stays that way. I have to reboot the server to get the remote desktop services working again.

I have noticed by logging into the console session on vmware, that after authenticating on the remote desktop client, it doesn't actually connect because my session using the same credentials on the vmware console is still active and untouched.

Here are some errors I see :

An error occurred when transitioning from CsrConnected in response to EvCsrInitialized. (ErrorCode 0x80070102)
&
An error occurred when transitioning from CsrConnected in response to EvCsrInitialized. (ErrorCode 0x80070057)

These logs are also accompanied by Event ID 4005 "The windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated"

I also noticed when I enter the IP for the VM in the remote desktop client and hit enter, the logon screen comes up immediately instead of the couple of ms you normally wait.

Any idea on how to fix this permanently?

User Profile Disks Same Disk Identifiers

Hello.

Running a test RDS2019 server with UserProfile disks hosted on an RDSbroker share on 2016.

Everything was fine but since the weekend, logging new users onto this server caused a black screen. The system became completely unresponsive. Upon investigation, we're noticing the following errors..

1) Disk 4 has the same disk identifiers as one or more disks connected to the system. Go to Microsoft's support website (http://support.microsoft.com) and search for KB2983588 to resolve the issue.

2) An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk4\DR24 during a paging operation.

4) The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur in VolumeId: \\?\Volume{7483659d-0000-0000-0000-100000000000}, DeviceName: \Device\HarddiskVolume27.
(A device which does not exist was specified.)

5) The IO operation at logical block address 0x24ea0 for Disk 4 (PDO name: \Device\00000131) was retried.

For issue 1 i've looked at the KB and checked several other posts, using diskpart to look at the uniqueid, they are all different.

2) Related? not sure

3, 4 and 5 I could do with some advice please.

User Profile Disks: Disk has the same disk identifiers as one or more disks connected to the system

Hello,

we have a Windows Server 2016 RDS session-based server with User Profile Disks enabled. If there is at least one user logged in, for every other user that connects to the server, a warning is added to the Event logs: "Disk <x> the same disk identifiers as one or more disks connected to the system". Aside from that, all seems to work fine, so should I be worried about these warnings?

Questions regarding the terminal server CALs

Hello,

I have one RDGW and three RDSH server (rdsh1, rdsh2, and rdsh3) in a same domain and we need to purchase some license/CALs. But I have some questions about the licensing:

1. Do I need to purchase the per device CALs for the RDGW/RDSH? We already activated the Windows Server 2016 std using the open license.
2. If I purchase 50 per user CALs, can rdsh1, rdsh2, and rdsh3 share those CALs? or I need to purchase 50 CALs for each RDSH server separately? which means we need to purchase 150 per user CALs in total for 3 of RDSH servers?

Thanks.

How to publish Google Chrome with a bookmark

I have published URL shortcut as Remote app on rd web. It keeps forcing users to logoff immediately.

So I changed the Remote app from URL shortcut to a batch file with command "start chrome https://internalwebsite/"

Still users complain they are forced to log off.

Is there any better way of publishing Remote for end users to access URL. I was thinking of Chrome GPO with bookmark but the policy adds bookmark under managed bookmarks folder. I am looking to URL directly available on bookmark bar.

I even made easy for user by making the site to open on startup. But the users doesn't want site to open when they launch chrome on the RDSH server.

So I am looking for the URL to only work on Remote App or provide bookmark on bookmark bar. Please let us know if anyone know how to achieve this.

Thank you

Network Logon service stops running

Greetings, I am moving this post from Windows 10 IT Pro > Windows 10 Networking..to this forum.

I am running Windows Server 2016. Network Logon service stops running arbitrarily in some indefinite period of time, sometimes hours, sometimes a day or two. The system is fine and then Network logon service stops and I can no longer connect via remote desktop. I have no console attached on a permanent basis to remote desktop is my primary connection method. When it stops, I have to power down and restart the server or attach temporarily the console and restart Network Logon service which I have verified has indeed stopped.

In the registry are the correct entries:

Under Value Data:

LanmanWorkstation

LanmanServer

I'm seeing some other errors in the event viewer which seem related.

The processing of Group Policy failed because of lack of network connectivity to a domain controller. This may be a transient condition. A success message would be generated once the machine gets connected to the domain controller and Group Policy has successfully processed. If you do not see a success message for several hours, then contact your administrator.

How to exclude users from being load-balanced on TS/RDS?

$

I have a Win2012R2 TS Farm:

Srv0 = Ts Web

Srv1 = TS1

Srv2 = TS2

users open a Web portal and get redirected to either TS1 or TS2

But sometimes, ServiceDesk/HelpDesk must forcibly sign-out users, killing console/terminal, killing proccess, etc

There is a way to make those IT users to not being load-balanced and conenct to TS1 or TS2, per case?

The  issue here, is that IT guys are conencting via TS/RDP to see full desktop and sign off users, but occasionaly, they got the wrong TS. We´re currently using a local admin account, but we would like to give IT users the hability to connect to a specific TSx server

RDP Users Being Disconnected due to increase in Memory Use - Help

Hi,

We have a windows 2012R2 virtual server that is managed by HyperV with about 300GB RAM allocated to it.  We have about 5 users.  Often, when there is some intensive dev work occurring users will be disconnected and unable to login back in. We can access the drives from a mapped server and HyperV says that the Server is still running.

The only thing we can be do is to reset the server via HyperV which results in users losing work.

Is there anything we can put in place to prevent this from happening?

Many thanks

Terminal server services stop working on Windows Server 2016

Dear,

Problem is is that after installing KB 4512495 it is impossible to connect to the remote desktop services (RDS). So it is a real big problem. This could be solved to uninstall KB 4512495 but this took hours and hours while the screen says: "Don't turn off your computer. Installation 100% complete!". So we had to wait a full frustating night because the other day customers had to use this server 2016.

Questions are:

1) What procedure had to be followed so that a production server can be updated without interruption.

2) Should KB 4512495 for security reaseons to be installed? And if yes, when will we be informed after this nasty problem has been solved?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Best Regards,

Aart

Black Screen on User Login Windows Server 2016 Terminal Server

$

I have randomly only Black Screen, when a User logs on to a Windows 2016 Terminal Server. Sometimes, I am able to log off the User, but sometimes not even this is working and I have to reboot the Server - in this case the server crashes on Reboot after a longer time out in the shutdown progress.

The Server ist fully patched trough Windows Update. I tried already lot of suggestions that I have found in forums on the internet - nothing helped. As lots of other Admins are facing a similar problem with in different configuration, I think this should be addressed by Microsoft - or does anyone have an idea on how to solve it?

- The Terminal Server is running on a Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 in my case - but I have seen other Admin having the same problem on hardware install as well
- Antivirus is Symantec Enterprise, but I have other Admins seen having same problem with other Antivirus
- Firefox is installed on my Terminal Server
- Only two Users are working on this Terminal Server
- The problem seems to occur at least one time a week - but I also have made 50 logins and logouts in a row with the user and it did not happen one time
- All Users (in my case both Users) can be affected by the problem
- Ctrl+Alt+End does not work (so the User could logoff himself or start Task Manager

Hi All,

As the title say, i deleted the Remote Desktop certificate store in "Cert:\LocalMachine\Remote Desktop\", How to re-generate or re-create this certificate auto-generate?.

EDIT:

For more detail, i followed this manual:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/36151.renew-the-rdp-self-signed-certificate.aspx

When I stop and start the "Remote Desktop Configuration" service, In the Event Viewer appear this message: "The Terminal Server has failed to create a new self signed certificate yo be used for Terminal Server authentication on SSL connections. The relevat status core was Object alredy exists."

Thanks a lot.

Disconnected sessions not being logged off after timeout

Hi all,

Confused with this.  We have a collection which is set to log disconnected sessions after 5 minutes.  This is also set in a group policy.  The brokers are server 2016, session hosts are a 50/50 split between 2016 and 2019 whilst we fully test 2019.  Happening on both 2016 and 2019.

I'm looking at the list of users right now and can see two who have been disconnected an hour ago.

any ideas?

Thanks

upgrading from W2K12R2 to Windows server 2016 RDS collection for HTML5 usage

$

Hello,

Currently we are running a W2k12r2 RD deployment with 2 RD connection brokers in HA and 2 RD Gateway / Webaccess servers, 2 DC's with RD licensing. RD session hosts are all W2k12R2.

We would like to be able to offer both normal and HTML5 connections for our remote desktops and remote apps.
For what i understand from this document and this document we need to upgrade Brokers, Gateways and rd webaccess servers to achieve this.

- What will be the best way to upgrade our brokers and have no down time. Since we only can have 2 brokers in 2012r2, remove one broker from the  HA configuration, add a new 2016 broker to the HA configuration, remove the last 2012r2 from the configuration and add another 2016 to the HA configuration?? Is there anything else? Can we simply remove one broker from the configuration and mount a 2016 iso and update?

- Rd gateways and rd webaccess servers run in mixed mode. So next step is to simply install new Rd gateways / rd web access servers Windows 2016, remove 2012R2 servers from configuration and add the new Windows 2016 servers to the configuration. Am i missing something?

- Rd licensing servers and Rd session hosts on W2k12r2 are supported in this configuration. We cannot run collections in mixed mode. We need per user licenses for HTML5.

So if we have the setup like described above will we be able to offer both normal and HTML5 connections to our remote desktop and remote apps?

Thanks,

LEVD

Indexing issue on RDS with Outlook 2013 and UPD

We have an RDS farm on Server 2016 and have Office 2013 installed. The users have a User Profile Disk which is where everything for them is stored. I'm having an issue getting Outlook 2013 to index the .OST file.

I've installed the Windows Search feature and rebuilt the index. I don't even see Office 2013 in the Indexing locations. I do see it's set to index OST and PST files however.

When I click on the Indexing status inside of Outlook it just says "Loading" and never loads.

any advice?

Thank you

How can I allow access to remote apps without allowing full access to remote desktop?

$

Hi,

I have Remote desktop services set up and running. Everything currently works, but it's not how I'd like it to work...

Essentially it seems that the deployment requires that the users who are set to have access to a remote app are also required to be in the Remote Desktop Users group on the server where the remoteapp runs. This unfortunately allows the user to login to the remote desktop to use the desktop beyond just having permission to use the remote app. How can I get it set so the user can only use the remote app and not be able to log onto the remote desktop of the server?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Moving RDS CAL from 2012 R2 Essentials to 2019 Essentials

We have a server running Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials + 8 Remote Desktop Services licenses. We are going to buy new hardware with Windows Server 2019 Essentials. Can we transfer Remote Desktop Services licenses from the old server to the new one, or should we rather buy new RDS CALs?

RemoteFX on Hyper-V Console but not through RDP

$

Hi,

have a hard time right now. My setup is a Windows Server 2016 on a HP DL380p Gen8 Server with a Nvidia Quadro K4000 GPU. My goal was to create a VDI with user based Windows 10 Enterprise desktops my users can connect to with RemoteFX enabled.

Unfortunately I cant get it to work. As soon as I enable the RemoteFX GPU within the Hyper-V settings of any of the VM's I cant connect via RDP from another Windows 10 with MSTSC anymore.

- I get the user/password promt and enter both. (I now the authentication works because if I enter wrong credentials I get an password error)

- I see the "Remote Connection is being secured..." message and a second later the error message: "Your Remote Session has ended, possibly for one of these reasons:. The Administrator ended, the session Network Error...

BUT:

If I RDP into the Hyper-V Server (RDVSH) and open the Hyper-V Manager I can click on the same machines console and login - with RemoteFX enabled (as I can see within device manager "Microsoft RemoteFX Graphics Adapter WDDM...")

If I remove the GPU using Hyper-V Manager I can connect from the Windows 10 client with MSTSC to my VM Windows 10 just fine.

Other things I checked:

- Using Windows Server 2019 (same effect)

- clean non-domain windows 10 machine (same effect)

- MSTSC with the 10 MBit LAN option and not automatic detection (same effect)
