2012 r2 Server Manger cannot manage RDS: Collections, Host Servers, and Connections won't display

Hello,

We have a 2012 r2 server running RDS publishing a number of RemoteApps.

When we go to the Server Manager and drill down to the Remote Desktop Services area we are seeing a number of the sections that will not display their information and we can no longer manage RDS via Server Manager.

Starting at Server Manager\Remote Desktop Services\Overview the "Deployment Servers" window shows a red banner with "Could not refresh the list of servers"

Going to the Server Manager\Remote Desktop Services\Collections, all three of the windows, Collections, Host Servers, and Connections will eventually display the similar type of error message, stating to check the status of the services for Remove Desktop Connection, Windows Remote Management and Windows Internal Database.

server manager error

The server is fully patched, event logs don't show anything of note.

We've rebooted the server and confirmed all those services and all "Remote Desktop *" services are running.

We're still able to access the RDWeb instance to use the published applications.

This had been working previously, not sure when it last was though as we don't always go into Server manager. We can manage the remoteapps via powershell, but are curious why Server Manager no longer functions.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

thanks...

Authentication issues accessing RemoteApp and Remote Desktop externally

I am having issues with domain-joined client computers connecting to a RemoteApp or Remote Desktop session via the internet. I have the feed set up so that the shortcuts appear in a start menu folder. When the client (Win 10 or 8.1) is on our internal network, the shortcuts to RemoteApps and Desktops work immediately without the user being challenged for credentials. However, when connecting from the internet, the user is challenged for credentials. External access is via a Windows Server 2012 R2 machine running the Web Application Proxy role. The RD web interface is published via the web application proxy using pass-though. The gateway, web access and broker roles are all installed on the same Server 2016 Standard box. There are 2 distinct problems when clients try to connect externally:

1) On Win 8.1 the client can enter their credentials and connect. We want them to not be prompted - the user experience should be the same both within the internal network and externally.

2) On Windows 10, the client enters their credentials, which are then rejected - the user cannot access the RemoteApp or desktop externally, the credentials dialogue box simply opens again.

I have implemented group policies on the clients to enable caching of credentials and automatic pass through authentication. These policies include: "Allow delegating default credentials" for our terminal servers the "Set RD Gateway authentication method" policy set to "Use locally logged-on credentials".

I can't see anything logged on the broker/gateway to indicate why auth is failing on the Win 10 clients, either in the Security logs or the Remote Desktop specific Applications and Services Logs. Is there something I can enable to log and audit this information and help get to the bottom of this?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

What would be the recommended hardware specs & Internet bandwidth for 400 concurrent users using RDS? If it is possible, it would be most helpful if there will be computation (supporting link for the steps etc.).

Thank you,

Server 2012 - RDP to VM mystery

$

I have a hyper-v server with two server 2012 vm's

I can RDP to one VM on Win 7 client , but not the other VM.

I tried RDP from one VM to the other VM (which I can't connect to from Win 7). Error about Oracle ccpsd....

So I unchecked the Require Network Level Auth on the VM which I couldn't connect to with Win 7 client. Now I can RDP to the VM.

So, why can I connect to one VM with NLA [x] checked, but not able to connect to the other VM,  unless I uncheck NLA?

Thinking of re-creating the vm...

USB redirection (remoteFX) working on win10, not on server 2016.

Hi everyone, I'm pulling my hair out on this one...

In short, I easily got USB redirection working on our Win10 Workstations, but can't get it to work at all on Windows server 2016.

Set up:
- All workstations are on Windows 10.
- Servers are on Windows server 2016, we have bare metal boxes, and some VMware hosted servers as well (same behavior). Some are still on trial license, some on full fledged license.
- All Group Policies are set via Active Directory Domain Controller, and are the same for workstations and servers.

So I did all the recommended stuff:
- Enabled remoteFX for clients and hosts. (admins and users)
- Allowed all hardware.
- Enabled encoding for win 2008R2 (I'll remove this one since we dont have any win2008.)
- Do not allow supported P&P device redirection: Disabled.
- Running remote desktop client as admin.
- Enabling local devices and selecting the wanted device (usb joystick in our case).

That works great when connecting from a win10 workstations to a win10 workstation. We see the little computer in the RD title bar, the joystick redirection works, we can unplug the device, plug it back and get it working again.

When connecting to a windows server 2016 (bare metal, VM, trial or full license) the remoteFX computer icon doesn't even show up in the title bar. Again, the Group Policies are indentical and checked with GPresult.

What is different in windows server 2016 ??????

I saw a few people reporting the same issue on a few forums, but never any resolution...

Need to Remove 20-Pack of Per User TS CALs from failed 2008 Server Standard

Hi,

I have an old failed DC(Demoted to a Member Server before it failed) that is a VM. It is the Terminal Server Licensing Manager for remote connections to our terminal server that runs Server 2008 Standard.

How can I forcibly remove these CALs so that they can be transferred to another server running 2008 Standard? Is it possible to migrate/upgrade so that these could be installed on a server running Server 2016 Standard?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated as I have hit a wall

would DC or DNS help diagnose RDS connection errors?

$

having issues with users connecting reliably and quickly. it can take numerous frustrating tries to connect both over LAN and over Internet.

the remote desktop server does not seem to be collecting any information at all about these failed attempts. users are not getting prompts for passwords, they get messages saying the system is off or not available or remote access is turned off.

mac users get a connection refused error and that's it.

is there another system log on the RDS server (2008 R2) that I should be looking at? the security log is really doesn't help.

would another network system see these events, like a domain controller, or a DNS server? having a heck of a time diagnosing this.

any thoughts appreciated. thanks in advance.

cheers!

RDS Licensing - Find out which RD Session Host that "requested" a license

I've been looking through the RDS event logs and I can clearly see that the licenses have been granted to X, Y or Z device. But I want to find out which RD Session Host they accessed to get the license. Is this logged somewhere (maybe if you enable verbose logging)?

Unable to install RDS roles - Windows Server 2016STD

I am currently having an issue installing RDS on a Windows Server 2016STD. This server IS currently a domain controller. I know it's not recommended to run a terminal server on a DC but it is what is required for the situation.
From what I understand Microsoft temporarily disabled the ability to install both RDS and ADDS on a single server, but from the info I can find on Server 2016 this has since been re-allowed.

I am attempting to do a session-based deployment.

When trying to go through the standard deployment method, the installation fails on the RD Connection Broker role service with: "Failed: Unable to install RD Connection Broker role server on server 'Server'".

If trying to install with the Quick Start deployment method, the deployment fails at Remote Desktop Services role services with the error: "Failed: Unable to install the role services. Exception calling "Translate" with "1" argument(s):"Some or all identity references could not be translated."

There don't appear to be any errors or relevant events in the Event Viewer.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

RDS Endpoint Servers - Nested group membership not working?

$

I want to use the "RDS Endpoint Servers" group to determine which RD Session Host servers the license server will issue licenses for.

Does this group not handle group nesting? I would ideally want to use an AD DS security group that both applies the correct group policy settings (license mode and server) and allows it to use the license server.

The servers are a member of the group, the policy applies, the group membership shows up on the session host servers, but the RD Licensing Diagnoser shows an error saying it can't issue licenses because the "License server security group" setting is enabled and suggests that the server should be added to the "RDS Endpoint Servers" group on the license server.

If I add a server as a direct member of the "RDS Endpoint Servers" group and refresh the RD Licensing Diagnoser it turns green and everything is OK. When I remove it, it goes back to the error, despite the server being in the group (albeit nested).

By the looks of it only direct membership is working, but I want to confirm if that's the case (which would seem a bit strange) or if I'm missing something.

Any ideas?

Windows 10 1903 remote-app repeating keystrokes

Hi,

All our win 10 1903 clients, immediately after been updated from 1803 to 1903 start repeating keystrokes in remote apps. Servers are 2012 R2. RemoteFX cannot be disabled on session hosts servers since that solution causes problems to some of the apps running. Any one facing the same problem ? Any solution?

Error: There are no available computers in the pool

Hi,

We have an issue with Remote Desktop Services on Windows Server 2016 servers (RD Virtualization Host).
There are personal unmanaged Windows 10 machines running on these servers.
When you log on the RD Web website it gives an error:

There are no available computers in the pool. Try connecting again, or contact your network administrator.

The user can login with mstsc onto their machine, but through the RD Web website doesn't work.
Normally the website works fine, but once in a while this issue happens.
This issue is fixed when we reboot the RD Website server.
There are no related errors in the eventlogs.

Anybody any idea?

Thanks,

Remote desktop services goes "stale"

Hi there, we are experiencing an issue where we connect to one of our realtime machines and randomly (this happened about a week apart from one another) after you have authenticated, it just goes black and stays that way. I have to reboot the server to get the remote desktop services working again.

I have noticed by logging into the console session on vmware, that after authenticating on the remote desktop client, it doesn't actually connect because my session using the same credentials on the vmware console is still active and untouched.

Here are some errors I see :

An error occurred when transitioning from CsrConnected in response to EvCsrInitialized. (ErrorCode 0x80070102)
&
An error occurred when transitioning from CsrConnected in response to EvCsrInitialized. (ErrorCode 0x80070057)

These logs are also accompanied by Event ID 4005 "The windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated"

I also noticed when I enter the IP for the VM in the remote desktop client and hit enter, the logon screen comes up immediately instead of the couple of ms you normally wait.

Any idea on how to fix this permanently?

An Internal error has ocurred, Server 12 r2

I use RDP to connect to a Server12. It will work fine from the Win 7 Ultimate computer I use. I am setting up a Win 10Pro Enterprise computer (using the same hardware except for larger SSD hard drive). I am unable to connect from the new Win 10 setup, Hyper-V virtual Win 7pro, another Win 7Pro on my network , my Win 12 server or an Android app. I have disabled the Sophos UTM firewall on the remote system to test. I cannot find an error message in the event logs for any of the systems. The remote server does log"Listener RDP-Tcp received a connection" but nothing after that. If I use the incorrect credentials I get an authentication error but I don't see it logged. I have installed a new self signed cert. I am using a non-standard port but I use the same on my Server 12 and can remote in from anywhere.  I have noticed that in the Sophos firewall log that the good connection results in first a TCP connection then a UDP. The incomplete connections do not have a UDP connection.

Any help would be appreciated.

How to get a Batch Job session to push a zipped file from a remote server to a local machine/server

$

I have a program that our clients run as a RemoteApp. This program copies files out of a folder to another folder, then zips those files and downloads/copies them off the remote server to the clients local machine or flash drive.

The big picture of what I am trying to achieve is to have the ability for the client to set up a schedule of when they want the files downloaded/copied to their machine out being logged into the RemoteApp.

I have created the interface in the RemoteApp to create a schedule and it then creates a task in Windows Task Scheduler for the program to be run and the files be copied, zipped, and downloaded/copied.

The task created is successful and is executed to completion when the zipped files are moved to a location on the server that Task Scheduler and the Program are on.

However when the path to place the zipped files is on my local machine it fails because it can not access the path location when Task Scheduler is running the program. When the user creates a path to their local machine and runs the program in an Interactive Session the path is as follows:

\\tsclient\C\Data Export files

As I understand it Task Schedule launches the program using a users credentials in a Batch Job session. Is there anyway to let this session connect to my local machine and move the zipped files? Do I need to specify the computer that I am moving the data to IP Address' or some other kind of Identifier in the file path?

Best practice for a RDS involving several location's RD Servers - VPN or others?

$

I have a special project that needs to setup a central AD with RD Gateway and 1 RDS - all 2016 servers.  But at the same time, we will also need to involve cloud servers (Win 2016) from various providors to provide the best user experiences.

My current setup is to create a RRAS in the central site, and allow the remote single RDS servers connect in and then utilize the RD License Server and RAP CAP to manage the users' access.  The configurations went all right - with several minor adjustment, but the issue is that the VPN connection sometimes stays, and sometime shows not so normal situation - i.e. show connected but there aren't able to see each other - mainly issues with DNS Client or RPC events.

So my questions:

1. is this the best practice in setting up things like this?

2. If this is a doable way, what is the best solution to ensure the VPN stays actively connection happily?

Many thanks in advance.
