RDS 2019 + KB4519338 Roaming Start Menu fails

Cross-post from here, where I was redirected to this forum.

We have a bunch of Server 2019 RDS machines, that until last weekend worked fine. For roaming the start menu we roam AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\CloudStore and so far that worked perfectly for having for examples Tiles saved that users put in the start menu themselves.

Since installing KB4519338 this weekend during our maintenance, the start menu is not working anymore. Only right-click works, but the start menu itself is not functional. We all know the start-menu terror from Windows 10 syspreps and what not. When I remove AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\CloudStore from roaming, the start menu works again, but of course customizations aren't saved. We've tried roaming AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Caches as well, as that's to be seen in some howto's, but we've never found that to be needed, and it doesn't help here either.

Anyone else with this issue? By the way the latest as of yet KB4520062 does not fix this either, even if that has some start menu fixes.

Black Screen on all new Connections, SessionHost has to be rebooted

hi,

we're suffering from session hosts that produce black screen errors in a RDS 2016 farm.

already connected users can mostly work, all new connections end up with a black screen.

to resolve the error the server has to be restarted.

i can say that

- this error appears after error 1534 (Fehler bei der Profilbenachrichtigung des Ereignisses Delete für Komponente {709E2729-F883-441e-A877-ED3CEFC975E6}. Fehlercode: Das System kann die angegebene Datei nicht finden.) starts appearing in the eventviewer.

- upon checking the registry for this SID i end up at "ProfileNotifyHandler Class app id {E10F6C3A-F1AE-4adc-AA9D-2FE65525666E} inprocserver32, C:\Windows\System32\gameux.dll".

- starting explorer.exe per taskmgr does not open an actual explorer window although the process appears in taskmgr

- tskmgr, eventvwr, cmd can be started without problems

- affected users appear as active in RDS management

- no third party security software is installed

- farm is fully patched

- HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileGUID and ProfileList are ok (no old or .bak entries)

looking forward on how to resolve this without  rebooting the server or a permanent fix

New farm server won't allow logons

We have a remote desktop deployment using a connection broker and web access for virtual desktops and all server 2012 R2 machines.  We are trying to add a new server into the farm and cannot get it to work.
The new server is part of the domain.
The new server has been added to the farm.
Server manager can enable and disable logins on the server.  Using "change logon /query" confirms that the logon status changes.
Attempts to logon to the server results in a "Logins are not enabled" error message.
Quite often the event log in the server says it's in drain mode, however rebooting seems to resolve this issue.
We can log onto the server from the connection broker using remote desktop and a user account.  So there does not appear to be security or firewall issues involved.
Two things that we have been able to find.
With server manager if we attempt to re-install remote desktop it always fails with a non specific error message.
Reviewing the logs in the connection broker. There is an entry.  Event 802.
RD connection broker failed to process the connection request for user ... Error: Element not found

Not sure how to get any further with this

Server 2008 RDP Event ID 17

Hi all,

We have an old Server 2008 with TS/RDP services. This morning it started generating an Event ID 17 about a corrupted certificate, and has now completely stopped people from logging in remotely - even as admins.

I have reactivated the TS Licesing server (not made a difference), so now desperately need a workaround until I manage to build a new server, or a new solution.Is it possible to at least enable admins to log in remotely?Many thanks,

Random crash on RDS Server

Hello,

I have two Windows Server 2016 servers (RDS-01 and RDS-02) on one client, each with RDS in standalone mode.

The RDS-01 server has the roles:
- Remote desktop access via the web The server
- Remote Desktop Services License Manager
- Remote desktop session host
- Service Broker for Remote Desktop Connections

RDS-02 has the role of "Remote Desktop Session Host". There is no automatic load balancing configured.

RDS-01 publishes RemoteApp programs, on which RDS-02 comes to connect.

The problem I have is this:
- The RDS-01 server is randomly crashed. That is, you can not open new TSE sessions (black screen, then server kick)

When this happens, I systematically have such errors in the event viewer: "An error occurred during the transition of CsrConnected in response to EvCsrInitialized. (Error code 0x80070057)"

Although we search the net, many people encounter this problem but no resolution was found.

The RDS-02 server does not present any problems with RDS session connection, like the one described above.

The updates installed on both servers are identical.

Has anyone ever encountered such crashes?

Windows Server 2019 RemoteApp audio problem

Hi all,

I have a little issue with RemoteApp. I installed a session based desktop enviroment. I made the collections with the rights users group and add a few apps.

The RD Web Access is correctly working and i able to login, see the apps. One of the apps is need to use microphone, but thats not working. In the GPO I enabled theaudio and video playback redirection and audio recording redirection. In the collections properties checked all chekbox in the client settings.

Any idea?

Upper Case and Lower case switching randomly

Hi all,

Since applying latest 1803 Windows 10 update and latest upgrade to solve back screen bug, a lot of my user tell me that on their rdp session, the keyboard switch randomly from upper to lower case and vice versa.

Before 1803 update no problem, they only comes after.

Client run Windows 10 Pro 17134.137

Server run Windows 2012 R2 6.3 9600

RDP stuck at "Configuring Remote Session" WS2016

Hi. We have a new WS2016 RDS deployment (VMs on Hyper-V):

 - 2x WS2016 RDGW in NLB

 - 2x RDCB in HA configuration

 - couple RDSH servers

The problem is that in 30-50% of the connection attempts via these gateways, the connection is stuck at the "Configuring remote session" message. The connection is never successfully estabilished when this happens and it is closed without any error couple minutes later. When you try again (or just immediatelly cancel the connection and reconnect), the connection may or may not go through.

When this problem happens, I can see there's single HTTP connection on the RDGW that accepted the connection with 0 bytes transferred in either direction. There are no related errors at this time.

Can anyone help? Btw. this problem also happens when connecting to a different single-host RDS deployment through these gateways.

I suspected the problem might be in the NLB, but removing either of the gateways from the NLB configuration (and from RDS farm) doesn't help, the issue is still there.

Rebooting the gateways helps for a short while (hours), but then the issue is back.

There are some other errors on the gateways, but these don't correlate to the connection attempts (event 210, source terminalservices-gateway: "Http transport: IN channel could not find a corresponding OUT channel" with no other details).

RDP clients are various ... W8.1, W10, Mac...

Error on login after upgrade to Server 2016

I am running published desktops in an RDS environment on Windows 2008r2. I am testing an upgrade to Server 2016 for the published desktop servers. We are using the FsLogix profile software so they retain their settings.

When users login to Server 2016 for the first time, they get the following error popup just before the desktop appears

"" has been removed from this computer. Do you want to clean up your personalized settings for this program?

Yes/No

Selecting Yes prevents the error from appearing again unless you log into the Server 2008r2 desktop again.

Unless you wait 5 minutes or so, you need to use the keyboard to make a selection, the mouse doesn't work even though the pointer is present.

In the event log I only see one message that might relate to the problem:

ID 1534,

Source: User Profile Service,

Text: Profile notification of event Delete for component {709e2728-f883-441e-a877-ed3cefc975e6} failed, error code is The system cannot find the file specified.

I want to avoid having my users need to click on the message to get in the first time and I cannot reset the users profile.

Has anyone encountered this before or can you point me to the proper place in the registry so I can remove it before they login?

VDI Connection Stuck in remote connection both publish and pooled

Hi Experts,

We have an issue with our VDI client. some users are unable to connect with the connection broker as authentication. but sometimes they've connected. the design of VDI is Internal client is directly pointing to Broker Session and RD gateway accepting External client only. We have tried to Un-check the bypass rd gateway server local addresses , it is impacting the client connection and they need to re enable the proxy which doesn't need anymore. All internal client has go through to RD gaetway before directly go to broker session host.

HTML5 / licensing / connection policies questions

Hi,

I have a question about HTML5 webclient.

Right now we have several collections using the licensing settings thats configured for the deployment, per device call.
For one collection, we want to use HTML5 so we need to use per user call. I made a server policy for the servers in the (HTML5) collection defining to use per user call. This works great, the default rd deployment licensing setting is overwritten with the policy setting to use per user call. So everyone that logs in with the HTML5 client connection to that collection gets a user call.

Now here is the problem / my question. We have 100's of users connecting to several collections, if the word gets out / someone share the URL for the webclient we have the possibility that someone logs in to a collection not configured for per user call but per device call by HTML5 webclient. We dont want every per device call to be consumed like MS warns for.
Is there a way to limit access to the HTML5 Webclient? For like lets say only that collection is allowed to connect by HTML5 so we are sure its a collection with configured per user calls?

RemoteAPP after windows 10 update 1803 are slow and right mouse button is not responding (it reacts only sometimes)

Hi,

our workstations with Windows 10 pro are in this weekend updated to version 1803. For main system we use RemoteAPP aplications on Windows server 2012R2 (Windows server 2012R2 is full updated). After update on client station are RemoteAPP slower, and  right mouse button is unresponsive, or react verly long time... 

It is a big problem for us.

PS: after replace mstsc.exe and mstscax.dll from older version Windows 10 is all OK. but this is not a solution.

adding more licences to a windows 2003 server

Hi,

i am trying to find out if it is possible to add more remote desktop/terminal server licenses to a windows server, 2003 version. We currently have 2 licenses for the server, but are looking to increase this.

is it still possible to even buy more of these licenses for windows server 2003?

Problem issus to logon to server 2008 r2, freeze on the grey screen after the CTRL+ALT+DEL

Hello,

In our infastructure we have a logon problem in a physical windows server 2k8 R2 which the the screen froze on the grey screen of windows 2k8 R2 after CTRL+ALT+DEL and thats through RDP or through the console, and the problem resolved after a hard reboot but he reappear every once in awhile. when we restart the system its provides a temporary fix but we would like to find a permanant solutions. And when it happend all the provide services from this server works perfectly. please can anyone have any ideas about how to solve the problem.

Trouble while migrating RDS License Server CALs

Hello,

I have questions about migrating RD license server from 2012 R2 to 2019, I have

1 x Server 2012 R2 RDS license server with Server 2012 CALs (Enterprise agreement)

2 x Server 2012 R2 that do RDCB, RD gateway and web access roles.

13 x Server 2012 R2 Session host servers.

I want to upgrade them to Server 2019s.

First I created a Server 2019 with RDS License server role, and tried to migrate CALs to it, it asked for Enterprise agreement numbers, so I added and selected "Server 2019" CAL type and the migrator complained that it could not delete the CALs from the source server.

So I removed it and Added again as Server 2012 Types and it removed the CALs from the source license server.

I added the RD License server to RD License server group and License server role from RDS Deployment over view.

I stopped RD license server service from the Server 2012 R2 RD license server, removed the 2012 R2 RD license server from the RD license server group, and RDS Deployment over view. When I connected to the RDS, License usage did not change but I was able to connect. As if RDS does not know about the new RD license server but still let me use it.

Questions:

1. As I have Enterprise agreement, I can use the CALs for 2019 type? What do I do to make sure I can add the CALs as server 2019 type.

2. Why the RDS license usage count did not change? I rebooted gateway/web/connection broker servers but the usage count did not change, what am I doing wrong?

Remote connection does not work

Hello,

I am trying to remote connect my laptop with Windows 10 pro edition to my office work station through Sisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility. I am able to connect to secure VPN but after when I tried to connect to the wok station I get the error "your credentials did not work". Please help to find a solution.

Windows 7 Pro RDP works on all pc's except one

Hello All,

I have a few Win 7 Pro pc's that users remote desktop into via vpn from home.

One pc will not connect to the users pc at the office but can connect to the server and every other pc at the office thru rdp.

I can ping the users office desktop but rdp will not connect even with the firewall disabled. The pc at the office is accessible via rdp because I can remote to it with no problem from my pc.

Any ideas what could be stopping my user from connecting to that one office pc but all others he can connect to?

Connection problem RDS 2016

Hello.
I have the following problem on a rds server farm 2016. When a user wants to connect, he lands on the server's authentication page, enters his password.A very short loading takes place and it lands again on the authentication page.He gives a second time his password and there, the session opens.
This happens regardless of my connection method (IP, FQDN, ALIAS DNS).
In my DNS I have several A entries:
farm1 = IP 192.168.1.1
farm2 = IP 192.168.1.1
Where does this problem come from?
