2012 r2 - terminal server - allow only 1 app to external user

$

Hi guys.

The idea is to allow external partners to be able to rdp on terminal server and use only 1 app.

We do not wish that users is able to open \\otherserver\share, or open any other apps on this terminal server.

First of all we will create a test domain user and test with it.

Probably the first step would be that we configure in AD that this users is only able to RDP on this Terminal server and no other Workstation/server in our LAN, true?

the next step would would be that we configure that this user is only able to open 1 app on terminal server.

Probably this test user will not even do RDP connection and he will open RDP to this app thru browser, true?

RD Connection Broker - High availabilty 2012R2

We have RD Connection broker HA configured on 2012R2 with 2 connection brokers. We noticed one of our connection brokers was using a lot more memory. On the affected CB  "NetworkServiceRemoteDeskptopPublishing" was using over 2GB of memory. On the other server it was only using a few MBs.

I've a couple of questions about HA Connection Brokers that I can't seem to find on Technet:

1) The documentation states that 2012R2 CB HA is an active/active configuration. Yet there is an option to "Set active RD Connection Broker server". This seems a contradiction. What are you setting it active for?

2) How can I see what percentage of users are being directed to each server? DNS round robin should make this 50/50 but load on one of the servers is a lot higher suggesting something isn't working properly.

Thanks in advance!

VDI 2012R2 ThinClient suggestion

Hi.

I know that similar questions have been asked before.

However, I have not found an answer that I like, yet.J

We are in the process of designing a VDI (Personal Desktops) solution.

We are running a POC project with Microsoft Hyper-V 2012R2 VDI.

Server side configuration is working fine, but on the client side we are struggling to find a solution that matches our base expectations.

  1. Easy to manage
  2. Totally controlled from management software
  3. Ability to configure kiosk mode / autostart of connection so the user just need to enter username and password to log on the right VDI collection

It’s mostly nr. 3 we are having problems getting to work from ThinClient management software, only using the out of the box options, we are right now working with HP and HP Device Manager, but we have to fall back to scripts and file copys, two get the configuration to work 90%, it's just not good enough, for and enterprise solution.

How and what software/clients are you guys using?

RDS CAL Licensing

Hi,

I have a few questions regarding MS RDS licensing. Can anyone help please ?

1) There are 700 factory workers, all sharing 1 common unique ID to log into 800 devices concurrently, every morning they come into work. How many RDS licenses do they need to procure ? User or Device RDS CAL ? Someone claimed that they only need to obtain 1 * RDS User CAL. Surely, that doesn't make sense, does it ?

2) Are you able to downgrade RDS CAL 2012 to RDS CAL 2003 ? If yes, how do you do so please ?

3) If I implement Citrix Xenapp, will there be a difference between RDS User CAL and RDS Device CAL ? Does the version of the RDS CAL affect the Citrix Xenapp functionality too ?

4) Lastly, how do I interpret this shown in Terminal Services Licensing Manager ? It says :-

  • Windows Server 2003 - Terminal Server Per Device CAL Token (Volume License)

       Total = 9999

      Available = 9299

      Issued = 700

  • Temporary Licenses for Windows Server 2003 - Terminal Server Per Device CAL Token

       Issued = 177

Does that mean I've purchased 9999 RDS Device CAL and have used 700 Device CALs ? What does temporary RDS CAL licenses mean please ?

Thanks.

Windows 2012 R2 RDS Licensing Issue

I setup RDS License Server role in our domain controller server and installed open license RDS User CAL. From the connection broker server, I setup RDS Deployment's RD Licensing to per user and added the domain controller from the license server list. RD Licensing Diagnoser output is ok and able to detect the license server. All servers are windows 2012 R2.

Now the issue is, when using RD Web access and launching the application, the license manager is still showing 0 issued license. Tried opening several sessions, more than the number of license seats available and still RDS still works fine. Wondering whether license server is functioning properly. Let me know if someone experienced the same thing.

Thanks!

Windows 2012 RDS and NLB with 2 NICS

$

I have been looking around and I haven't seen a direct answer yet so I thought I would ask.

I'm looking for the correct configuration to separate NLB (heartbeat) and RDS (aka HTTP, RDP) across 2 NICS.

For example - A NLB cluster is configured.

Server 1 has 192.168.1.1 (ETH1) and 192.168.1.2 (ETH2)

Server 2 has 192.168.1.3 (ETH1) and 192.168.1.4 (ETH2)

The NLB cluster consists is assigned 192.168.1.5 with 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.4 as members of the NLB cluster.

I only want NLB traffic to utilize ET2 on each server and all other network traffic to use ETH1 on each server.

Right now, traffic will only pass through one NIC when both are enabled because they are all on the same subnet.  Any thoughts?

understanding the output of win32_TSIssuedLicense query

HI there,

I am trying to understand the terminal server license related the WMI classes and i ran a "Select * from Win32_TSIssuedLicense" on one of our license servers and can't make sense of the output. the user is in the administrator group and i ran it from the powershell administrator mode.

a couple of problems:

1. on one terminal server, i can see the license was provided by this license server from the "Remote Desktop Session Host" configuration tool, but this machine isn't in the output of issued licenses

2. multiple temporary licenses are issued to a machine which doesn't have terminal server role enabled

3. licenses issued to other machines without terminal server role enabled

As above stated, I can't make any sense out of this output. Any insight is appreciated.

thanks

Is it possible to get Remote Desktop Services running when in Sysprep Audit mode in 2012r2?

$

Hi,

I'm setting up some images for 2012r2 and personally like to be able to access the machines via RDP. I have broken out of the OOBE by pressingCTRL+SHIFT+F3, however, even though RDP is enabled (System --> Remote Setting) and running (Services --> Remote Desktop Services), when I run 'netstat -a', I cannot see any process bound to port 3389, as such I cannot connect. Have restarted the services just in case, but no dice.

I most the other OS setups (Windows 7, 208R2) this is fine (assuming you update either the password in audit mode or enable RDP login with a blank password), but the fact that nothing is listening on 3389 means that no matter what I do, I will not be able to connect.

Is there any reason why this is the case?

Cheers

Chris

Server 2012 possible to prevent Printer Drivers from being installed ?

$

High guy´s

what im trying to Archive is a Terminal Server with a fixed Set of Printer Drivers like HP Laserjet III and Easy Print Driver. when is set the Group policy to use Easy Print Printer Driver first, all the redirected Printers are created on the Terminal Server with Easy Print Driver -> Simple and Easy, but sometimes very Large Print Jobs and Quality issues. So I  have installed a HP Laserjet III Driver on the Terminal Server, an disabled the Use Easy Print Printer Driver first, witch resulted in a Printer on Terminal Server created as HL Laserjet III -> funtastic, but after a few Day´s i have a lot of Printer Drivers installed on the Terminal Server. How can i prevent the "out of Box" Printer Drivers from beeing installed ? I have no Printservers in my enviroment.

Security Settings\local policys\security Options\devices:prevent users from installing Printer Drivers set to Enabled

Administrative Templates\Printers\Disallow Installation of Printers using kernel-mode Drivers set to enabled.

Administrative Templates\Printers\Extend Point and Print Connection to search Windows Update set to disabled

Administrative Templates\Printers\Package Point and Print - Approved Servers is set to fake.Company.com

Windows components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote DEsktop Session Host\Printer Redirection\Specify rdsh Server fallback Printer Driver behavior ist set to "Default to pcl if one is not found"

so what am i missing ?

RDS External Connector installation confirmation and Event ID 4106

$

We purchased external connectors and I have activated a 2012 R2 RDS License server per instructions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887432. Those instructions are for 2003 - 2008 R2 but I did not find any RDS External Connector instructions specific to 2012 and the 2008 R2 instructions matched my options. All RDS session hosts are in per user mode and pointed to the license server via group policy. Users are able to logon to the RDS session hosts successfully. This is a new deployment.

The problem is we are seeing event id 4106 on the RDS License server with messages like "CAL reporting: Windows Server 2012 : RDS Per User CAL - Installed: 0, Issued: X" where X is an increasing number depending on number of unique users that have logged in since we activated. I ran a Cal Usage report in the RD Licensing Manager and it shows users listed under "Successful Per User License Issuance Detail", but Installed CALs says 0 and CAL Availability says 'None'.

Are we in some sort of grace period that will expire, or are we making use of our RDS External Connectors? How can I confirm?

Steve

Disconnected sessions get logged off

I'm struggling with a couple of 2012R2 servers within a domain which don't have Terminal Services Role installed but certain users need to connect to them for some dev work. What happens is even with my admin account a disconnected session (Remote desktop window closed) gets logged off after 1 min. Looking through the security log I see a couple of things I don't quite get. E.g. when I leave my RD window open but idle and it gets to the logon screen I can log back on not loosing my session yet in the event log I see 4634 "An account was logged off" then 4624 "Account successfully logged on" a couple of times followed by 4800 "The workstation was locked" and 1448 "A logon was attempted using explicit credentials". After a while I see 4634 again even though I'm still looking at the screen which I don't understand.

When I close the RD window and reconnect after 1min I see 4634 (log off) with logon type 7 followed by 4634 logon type 3. Then 4779 "A session was disconnected from a Windows Station" and a minute later 4647 "User initiated logoff" hello???

I checked gpresult and I found the setting I specifically set for the above not to happen so we've got:

Admin Templates:

  • Local Policy: MaxIdleTime: disabled
  • Local Policy:MaxDisconnectionTime: disabled

with the above repeated for user configuration. On top of that I have the following registry set

  • KeepAliveEnable: 1
  • KeepAliveInterval:

Where else should I be looking?

RDS 2012R2 RDP ClientActiveX has been disconnected (Reason= 4360)

$

We're getting random disconnects on one of our RDS 2012R2 Session Hosts. Client machines that get disconnected all have the same Event ID 1026 disconnect reason under TerminalServices-ClientActiveXCore: RDP ClientActiveX has been disconnected (Reason= 4360). I can't find any information on this disconnect reason, so I am hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. Based on some searching, it appears this might be network related, but, again, I don't know because I can't find any information on these disconnect reason codes.

A couple other bits of information:

1. On the session host itself under TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager, the Event ID 40 disconnect reason is always the same as well: Session xx has been disconnected, reason code 0.

2. All clients connect internally through the RDWeb portal. We have no Gateway at this point.

Remote desktop connection limit in windows 2003 administration as well as in the mixed environment of windows 2003 and 2008 servers

$

RDP protocol i.e. Remote desktop connection is configured to perfrom and manage  software administration of ORACLE application and database servers which runs on windows 2003 server.   Two sessions are allowed on each of these servers for database administrators. The question is:

a) if network administrators who perform window server administration (50+) are included in2 sessions limit or do they manage all these servers through Console Session which is separate from the remote desktop connection limits of 2 sessions.

b) How is the 2 sessions  limit prescribed by microsoft (more of a licensing limit) handled in the mix environment of windows 2003 and 2008 server where all these servers are managed on the VMWARE?

SBS 2003 RDP console session will not logout

$

We have an old SBS 2003 server on our test network which gets hacked about and rebuilt as needed.  After this latest rebuild it has started doing something a bit odd.

We can start an RDP console session and login as a user in the Domain Admins group fine and logout again. If we start an RDP console session and login as Administrator we can't logout of the session. The Logoff is logged in the Security event log but no logout occurs. The session remains open and active.

Has anyone seen this behaviour before and know a fix please?

Thanks

Disable installation of Windows Updates for users on RDS (Windows Server 2012 R2)

Hi, looks like a simple question, but I can't find the answer to it.

How should we disable installation of Windows Updates for non-administrators on Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS environment, but leave it possible to install them for administrators using Control Panel? WSUS is not used in this environment.
