Windows Search changes in Server 2019 RDS

Hi,

So nothing like being on the cutting edge......

I have been testing Server 2019 RDS and so-far-so-good apart from an issue with the Windows Search Service.

It appears that in Server 2019 each user gets their own search database EDB file in their profile path (appdata\roaming). e.g.

C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\S-1-5-21-3901271148-1553943383-1671037523-1629\S-1-5-21-3901271148-1553943383-1671037523-1629.edb

When they log on and log off; this is connected to the search service and the following event log is generated

Source:ESENT
EventID: 326
SearchIndexer (10896,D,50) S-1-5-21-3901271148-1553943383-1671037523-1629: The database engine attached a database (3, C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\S-1-5-21-3901271148-1553943383-1671037523-1629\S-1-5-21-3901271148-1553943383-1671037523-1629.edb). (Time=0 seconds)

Unfortunately it appears that this process is not very stable and on some logons the database in the users profile does not attach and the following error is generated

Source:Search
EventID: 3057
The plug-in manager <Search.TripoliIndexer> cannot be initialized.
Context: S-1-5-21-3901271148-1553943383-1671037523-1629 Application

Source:Search
EventID: 3028
The gatherer object cannot be initialized.
Context: S-1-5-21-3901271148-1553943383-1671037523-1629 Application, SystemIndex Catalog
Details: The specified object cannot be found. Specify the name of an existing object.  (HRESULT : 0x80040d06) (0x80040d06)

And a few more similar but related errors....

No subsequent logon/off will succeed in attaching the database until the Windows Search service is restarted

I am not testing with User Profile Disks or Roaming Profiles
There is no AV on the server

Any ideas?

Server 2016 Cannot install RDS

Hi,

I have been trying to deploy a server 2016 RDS and its weirdly giving me this error at this stage. I cant say I have had this problem before either!

I cant get anything out of event viewer which seems to point me at what is faulting.

The server has been rebuilt twice but still now luck.

We suspected a conflict with an older RDS in the live environment which we have also removed but still get to this point.

Is this likely to be a fault in the domain somewhere?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

many Thanks,

Steven Parsons

Remote desktop printing not working from windows 10 to window 7 pc

I am using remote desktop to remote from a Windows 10 client to a window 7 machine and printer re-direction is not working.  I have enabled this in the remote desktop connection setting but the printer does not get mapped.  I have ensured they are using the same driver.  There are no ports re-directed on the windows 7 machine (so no TS01 ports).  Any idea's?

Thanks

Shadow session - black screen

Hello,

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Multiple terminal server session

We have deployed windows 2019 terminal servers and found that user were return to parent windows of defferent session when closing child window. For example,

Session 1: User logged in to the server using published application. Opens child window from the same session.

Session 2:  Same User logged in to published application (which gives the same session on the server), launch the windows. Opens child windows.

Issue: when user closes child windows from session 2, it takes him to parent windows of session 1.

We never had this issue for windows 2008 terminal server session.

So is there any settings in the window server 2019 that should activate parent windows of the same session.

Thanks

remoteFX USB redirection

I have a Server 2012R2 VM hosted on hyper-v.

I can manage the VM, but not the hyper-v.

I want to connect to the VM with RDP (from a windows 10 computer), and redirect a local USB (some license dongle). And I hoped remoteFX could do that.

HOW do I get remoteFX to work? I have trawled througt a lot of guides and blogs, without luck.

It seems that the VM, being 2012R2, does not require vGPU, and hence the hyper-v host does not need to be able to provide that. I cannot determine if the hyper-v host MUST have the RD Virtualization Server role installed or not (I hope not)

It seems that all it takes on server VM is to enable remoteFX/USB direction, and to install Desktop Experience.

And to disable "do not allow supported plug and play device redirection" on on the server" and enable "Allow RDP redirection of other supported RemoteFX USB devices from this computer.”  on the client.

Yet, it seems not to work. Any help is appreciated.

Getting 4 minute freezes on Remote Desktop Session Host VMs in Azure

$

In the early morning and occasionally during the working day we are experiencing lots of 4 minute freezes in our Remote Desktop Session Hosts (Windows Server 2016) running in Azure. The servers are quite big as they are serving Windows 10 like general desktop sessions to 30+ users.

Only some of RDSH VMs are affected on each occasion. Different hosts on different occasions. One host may be hit twice in a single period. A period of freezes may be spread out up to an hour. There are more VMs affected in the early morning after they all power on than during the day.

I have a background script running on the VMs watching for Audio service hang ups and its logging indicates the 4 minute freezes involve the CPU pausing. Essentially if the CPU wasn't pausing the script would be logging a message after just 1 minute. My guess is the Azure Hyper-V hosts are automatically rebalancing on changes in load and to do so are migrating VMs between hosts. As our VMs use a lot of memory I believe the 4 minutes is mostly the time taken to copy the RAM contents to the other Hyper-V host.

Is this a reasonable conclusion? Are there other possible causes?

Has anyone managed to prevent their VMs from being moved?

Renaming Windows Domain Name Breaks RDS setup

$

Hi Everyone,

Im new to this forum and unfortunately i do not have enough experience to move past the issue that im currently facing.

To give you an overview on the current task at hand. I have a domain controller(2016) with RDS installed on one of the domain joined windows servers(2016). Basically to protect myself from any unexpected issues i have cloned the servers into an isolated environment to test on the renaming process before actually performing on production.

I have went through multiple articles and blogs on the process of renaming a domain name ie. ABC.local to ABZ.local.

The main issue is when the domain name is renamed(completed successfully), the RDS deployment breaks as it still detects the old server vm1.abc.local instead of the updated vm1.abz.local.

Most of the blogs available mention that it might be necessary to completely remove the roles and then re-add them back, however from my understanding it looks like the issue is primarily the server not updating its fqdn in the RDS deployment

I would really appreciate any advice on this matter and in the mean time i will continue to try and solve it.

Thank you.

RDWEB Network Drive Mappings

Hi Guys,

We are setting RDWEB with Windows 2016 server.

From the RDWEB client session the drive mappings are displayed differently from what the user would see from their windows explorer on their PC.

EG. Mapped drivers from RDWEB show up as Driver letter followed by the clients PC name.

Is it possible in RDWEB to display the drive mapping as they would see on their PC?

EG.

So it have the share name in the mappings... Not the PC name...

Is this possible to fix?

Thxs Chris

Remote Desktop Session Host Server - RAID10 vs RAID1

$

Scenario:

VMware ESXi 6.7 U2 Server

-2 x 8 core CPUs with hyperthreading

-64GB of memory

Virtual Machine 1:

-Domain Controller / file server

Virtual Machine 2:

-Terminal Server (remote desktop session host server)

-10-20 users

Storage setup for ESXi Server

Option 1. Go with 4 x 10K RPM drives in RAID10

-Virtual Machine 1: domain controller / file server

-Virtual Machine 2: terminal server

Option 2. Go with the following

2 x 7K RPM drives in RAID1

-Virtual Machine 1: domain controller / file server

2 x SSD drives in RAID1

-Virtual Machine 2: terminal server

For the storage setup, is Option 2 a better setup than Option 1? I’m not concerned about the file server drive speed but more concerned about the terminal server drive speed.

Remote Desktop not working anymore on Windows 10 & Windows 7

Hi,

since a few days, we have issues while trying to connect from Windows 7 & 10 clients to a Windows Server 2012R2 RD Farm.

RD farm is composed of two RD session hosts + 1 RD Gateway.

Windows 10 clients are build 1809.

The clients and the servers are in different domains with one-way trust. It worked just fine until a few days ago, when clients started getting the below error message. In the TerminalServices-Gateway/Operational log file, I can find a lot of 312 and 313 events which indicate that connections are not authorized.

I have no clue what changed as compared to when the connections where working fine.

We introduced the Microsoft Remote Desktop app as a workaround, and strange enough that works, but it is not liked very much by our users cos it has some drawbacks.

Can anyone help me, or point me where to look at?

Thanks,

RDS Print Redirection Does Not Work After Reconnecting to RDS)

$

Hi,

AWS Windows Server 2016 Datacenter, a production Server for my client is impaired. The client has computers and printers at their office location, users RDS into AWS Cloud Server and print using RDS print redirection.

Since a few days ago the RDS print redirection stopped working reliably. No error message after hitting "Print a Test page", the print job shows up in the queue and disappears after a couple of seconds.

Print redirection often works and some other times doesn't work for everyone in that location. The only time I know for a fact it works is after rebooting the server. It takes either one or few times of disconnect/reconnect from RDS that the RDS print redirection stops working.

I did everything I can on a local machine and network. They all work fine 100% of the time. I restarted Win Server 2016 Spooler and it still doesn't work. One other condition the RDS printing worked is when I reinstalled the printer driver on local machine newly but it stops working after one or few RDS disconnects and reconnects.

It is so frustrating, I bought a brand new hp laserjet pro-MFP m447fdw printer it didn't help. I bought a new Cisco SMB router, it didn't help. Apparently, it only has something to do with Windows Server 2016.

Move RDS from Windows Server 2012 to Windows 2016

Hello everyone,

I'm currently analyzing the best way to move my Remote Desktop Services from a Windows Server 2012 environment to  a Windows Server 2016 environment.

What I currently know about the scenario:

- Connection Broker and License Server are in separate servers

- There are 3 RD Hosts

- All server run Windows 2012 (not  R2)

What would be the best course of action in this case? Having the minimum amount of downtime

Thank you in advance for the help.

RDP latency from Windows 10 to Server 2016

$

My desktop is running Windows 10 v1803. My servers are running Windows Server 2016. All devices are connected through the same switch. All devices are patched, running the latest supported drivers and have the Windows Firewall disabled.

Ping latency is <1ms and file transfers are hitting gigabit speeds between Windows 10 and Server 2016.

I can successfully initiate an RDP connection (using MSTSC / no 3rd party software) from Windows 10 to Server 2016. However, the responsiveness of that connection is disturbingly sluggish. 1 mouse click takes 3-5 seconds to register.

In comparison, if I RDP between servers (2016 to 2016) I can stream YouTube smoothly This is not achievable from Windows 10.

Any ideas on what might be causing this behavior?

RDweb Web Client 1.0.18.0 Text Issues

I just updated my RDWeb web client to version 1.0.18.0. The upgrade went smoothly, but I'm experiencing a strange issue. My RDweb is in a load-balanced cluster using NLB. When I connect through the NLB cluster, some of the text in the interface appears to use placeholder values as in this screenshot:

However, when I connect directly to one of the nodes, the text displays as expected.

Can anyone offer a suggestion to fix this?

About RD Vulnerability CVE 2019 1181-CVE 2019 1182-CVE 2019 1222-CVE 2019 1226

$

Hello

Given this newly found vulnerability I have a question.

We use Remote Desktop Gateway to accept connections, but we are not exposing port 3389 (is blocked in our perimeter FW). Instead, we use a certificate and a secure 443 connection to access from outside our network to the RD Gateway, which then internally process the request.

Are we "covered" with this configuration, so we can carefully plan the patch roll out?

Thanks!

Windows 2019 Server set up for remote using CAL but giving 60 minute session error message

Hello.  I just migrated from Windows 2019 eval to standard and purchased an open license.  I did edit the group policy to reflect that I do have a 3 user CAL.

I am getting a 60 minute session warning.  Why is this warning coming up?  Is this a configuration issue?
