Hi I have an ubuntu 16.04 desktop which I can connect via remote desktop connection from a windows 10 prp machine when I input the internal IP of the machine.The ubuntu is running xrdp.When I try to connect over the internet with the Ubuntu's domain name I get:

"Your computer cannot to the remote computer because the remote desktop gateway server is temprarily unavailable.Try reconnecting later or contact your network adiministrator for assistance"

When I try t connect via microsoft remote desktop I can't connect either from internal ip either from the internet getting:

"Couldn't connect.Make sure the remote pc is turned on and connected to the network and has enabled remote access"

or "Couldn;t connect. Your session ended because therre was a protocol error.If this keeps happening ask your admin, or tech support for help"

Any suggestion?

we're suffering from session hosts that produce black screen errors in a RDS 2016 farm.

already connected users can mostly work, all new connections end up with a black screen.

to resolve the error the server has to be restarted.

i can say that

- this error appears after error 1534 (Fehler bei der Profilbenachrichtigung des Ereignisses Delete für Komponente {709E2729-F883-441e-A877-ED3CEFC975E6}. Fehlercode: Das System kann die angegebene Datei nicht finden.) starts appearing in the eventviewer.

- upon checking the registry for this SID i end up at "ProfileNotifyHandler Class app id {E10F6C3A-F1AE-4adc-AA9D-2FE65525666E} inprocserver32, C:\Windows\System32\gameux.dll".

- starting explorer.exe per taskmgr does not open an actual explorer window although the process appears in taskmgr

- tskmgr, eventvwr, cmd can be started without problems

- affected users appear as active in RDS management

- no third party security software is installed

- farm is fully patched

- HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileGUID and ProfileList are ok (no old or .bak entries)

looking forward on how to resolve this without  rebooting the server or a permanent fix

I have an existing RDS deployment with the following servers:

• RD Gateway
• RD Connection Broker, plus RD Web Access
• Domain Controller with RD Licensing Mgr
• (3) RD Session Hosts

We want to deploy a new RDS environment with all new GW/CB/SH but we don't want to buy new CALs. We currently have 160 device-based CALs but we only use about 1/3 of them. Rather than try to reset/restore only the required CALs can I simply build the new deployment and re-use the existing RD License Mgr? Can 1 RD License Mgr host (be 'joined to'?) more than 1 deployment and CB?

My concern, obviously, is that I'm trying not to have *ANY* effect on the existing deployment.

I'm setting up an new RDS environment consisting of a server with the connection broker, rdweb and licensing role and 1 session host. All Server 2019 machines fully patched. I have a SQL server 2017 which has multiple named instances, no default instance. One of these instances needs to contain the connection broker HA database. I created an AD security group and added the CB server to it. Created a login in SQL server for this group and gave it the db creator role. I installed the SQL server native client 11 on the CB server. The servers are in the same subnet and firewall settings are OK. When I try to enable HA on the connection broker, it says the database is not available. It does not create the database. This is my connection string:

DRIVER=SQL Server Native Client 11.0;SERVER=servername\instance;Trusted_Connection=Yes;APP=Remote Desktop Services Connection Broker;DATABASE=rdcb

I have also tried with the latest odbc driver using this string:

DRIVER=ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server;SERVER=servername\instance;Trusted_Connection=Yes;APP=Remote Desktop Services Connection Broker;DATABASE=rdcb

When I create the rdcb database beforehand and try to connect to it by creating a dataset via odbc data resources, this works without problems.

I have a Microsoft Remote Desktop Services deployment in my company that is now configured, however I am still struggling with the firewall ports to open, and there seems to be no documentation on the web talking about it. (At least no up-to-date documentation)

My servers are all running on Windows Server 2016 Datacenter, and my clients are on Windows 10 Professional.

I have a server that acts as the Web Access, Licensing and Broker server (Let's call it RDWLB), another server that acts as the AD DC (Let's call it DC), and another as the RD session host. (Let's call it RDSH) NLA authentication is also enforced.

I have checked this link: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/16164.rds-2012-which-ports-are-used-during-deployment.aspx but not all ports I monitored are mentioned here.

Here are the ports I have identified as potentially being used when a client tries to login to a remote desktop. (X -> Y : TCP 123 means that the host X sends a packet to host Y on port 123)

RDWLB -> RDSH : TCP 135, 1317, 1322, 1535, 1537

            -> DC : TCP 88, 135 & UDP 53, 389

Client -> RDSH : TCP 3389 & UDP 3389

         -> RDWLB : TCP 3389 & UDP 3389

         -> DC : TCP 88 & UDP 53, 389

DC -> RDSH : TCP 1025, 1036to1039, 1041to1046, 3035

RDSH -> DC : TCP 88, 389, 3389 & UDP 53, 389, 3389

I am OK with the ports not in bold, but would someone please be able to explain to me what the ports in bold are?

If I block some of them, it slows down the connection process, in particular the 1535 & 1537 ones, where it gets stuck on "Securing Remote Connection..." for some time.

I published RDP(mstsc) over RD Web and once I am connected over RDP(mstsc) I can not use the microphone because there is no recording device found.

If I bypass RD WEB and connect to destination client over RDP(mstsc) without RD Web everything works as designed.

So my only guess is there is an issue on the RD Web itself. I tested on Win 2012 R2, Win 2016 and Win 2019 with HTML5 but no luck. When I am connecting to RD web to my Win 2019 environment with HTML5 enabled IE11 pops up the following »Audio is not supported on your browser«:

What I tried so far but no success:

• Edit the collection properties, client settings tab, uncheck audio recording and other devices,  save your changes
• Edit the collection properties again, this time select audio recording and plug and play devices, save your changes
• Refresh the RD Web page and then test to see if audio recording shows in the prompt.
• If the above does not fix it please try editing a setting in deployment properties, saving it, then changing it back and saving it again.

Same setting with PowerShell:
Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration -CollectionName "XXXXXXXX" -ConnectionBroker "XXXXXXX" -ClientDeviceRedirectionOptions AudioVideoPlayback,AudioRecording

So no luck so far to get Audio recording device working over the RD Web and that drives me crazy!

Any help to find the solution would be appreciated.

We have a bunch of Server 2019 RDS machines, that until last weekend worked fine. For roaming the start menu we roam AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\CloudStore and so far that worked perfectly for having for examples Tiles saved that users put in the start menu themselves.

Since installing KB4519338 this weekend during our maintenance, the start menu is not working anymore. Only right-click works, but the start menu itself is not functional. We all know the start-menu terror from Windows 10 syspreps and what not. When I remove AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\CloudStore from roaming, the start menu works again, but of course customizations aren't saved. We've tried roaming AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Caches as well, as that's to be seen in some howto's, but we've never found that to be needed, and it doesn't help here either.

Anyone else with this issue? By the way the latest as of yet KB4520062 does not fix this either, even if that has some start menu fixes.

I'm having an issue on a single RDS 2016 server at the moment where the start menu doesn't open.  

I've gone though lots of steps including sfc /scannow  (No errors)   DISM with all the options (No Errors)

I've cleared the Registry in firewall policy\restricted services\configurable\system.

I believe the issue is that I don't have any applications registered in the get-appxpackage at all, it just comes back blanks where as on working machines I get a list of about 15.

I've tried to install the packages by hand using variations of 

Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy\AppxManifest.xml -Verbose

I can't seem to get the system to re-register those applications!

Open to any suggestions?  (Please no, have you restarted the server!)

This happens on all users including local admin and new accounts.  Happens in Safe and Clean Boot.

Hello I need some input on my RDS 2019 SSO issue. I have tracked down every article I can find about enabling SSO and I can not get my RDS SSO setup to work. I have double and triple checked all of the GPO and IIS config settings and they are all correct according to other articles I have read. Does anyone have any other articles or instructions they can point me to for RDS SSO so I can see if I missed anything at all?  My RDS is 2019 HA.  2 Brokers in HA, 2 Webapp/Gateways, 1 session host. All my certificates are correct. I have the SSO cert configured.

I have installed rds service using role-based services installation ticking roles.

My rds services runs fine BUT without option to shadow rds users.... 

I should use "Remote Desktop Services Installation" to do it right... my bad :/

The question is if I will install it that way, it wouldn't broke my registered rds calls and rds services when users are using it ??

Hi, we have 2 servers. 1 is for AD (Windows 2019) and 1 is for Remote Desktop (Windows 2012). My question is where should remote desktop service manager installed?

Because we are currently having this Warning from Event Viewer on Remote Desktop (Windows 2012) on every users that are connecting to the Windows 2012.

The Remote Desktop license server cannot update the license attributes for user "SLD" in the Active Directory Domain "mycompany.internal". Ensure that the computer account for the license server is a member of Terminal Server License Servers group in Active Directory domain "mycompany.internal".
If the license server is installed on a domain controller, the Network Service account also needs to be a member of the Terminal Server License Servers group.
If the license server is installed on a domain controller, after you have added the appropriate accounts to the Terminal Server License Servers group, you must restart the Remote Desktop Licensing service to track or report the usage of RDS Per User CALs.

We upgraded a system to 1903 and immediately we are unable to remote powershell to that box.

Already done:

No available updates to install.

rebooted several times more.

Firewall is disabled.

disable-pssession and re-enable pssession, no errors.

This is the error we get when trying to connect:

The internet has a lot of stuff about broken SPN's on web servers and deleting or recreating:

http/host.domain.com  

but this isn't a web server, it's just a Windows 10 desktop. there are no existing HTTP SPN's on this box.

Domain trust is fine, computer account is fine.

Any ideas are appreciated.

I just configured RDWeb-access on the server by setting the PasswordChangeEnable as true (IIS -> Pages -> Application settings)

Page shows up, Users can login..all good.

The problem is, when they try to change their password, it says: 

Your new password does not meet the length, complexity, or history requirements of your domain. Try choosing a different new password.

No matter what password you put it, it would not take the password. I even tried something like A19G8fczAe!!W

** I have disabled password complexity in Group policy. ** still no hope.

BUT - when i go to AD and set the user to : Must change password at next login.

Then I go to RDWeb and try. It successfully changes the password..

So it only works when i set the user up to MUST CHANGE PASSWORD NEXT LOGIN..

is it how it should work?

Users want to change their passwords whenever they want..but it doesnt work.

am I missing something?

Hi, I setup a Server 2016 RDS server, activated the OS and installed the license for the RDS server but somehow even I installed the license, RD Licensing Diagnoser still shows that 

Licenses are not available for this Remote Desktop Session Host server and RD Licensing Diagnoser has identified licensing problems for the RD session host server

The licensing mode for the Remote Desktop Session host is not configured.

The Remote Desktop Session Host server is within the grace period, but the RD session Host server has not been configured with any license server. 

I went ahead and open RD Licensing Manager but I see the license is installed as per user. 

Any idea what's causing this?

Abbreviated Problem: 

As soon as I create a RDS application collection I am unable to use any remote desktop services.  Reboot has no effect. Security Layer is set to "Negotiate" and Encryption Level is "client compatible".  Prior to creating the collection standard RDP works; after it is created, however, RDP (including remote apps) fail to connect with the error :



Likewise, Immediately upon deleting the collection, Remote Desktop begins working again.

-This is a quick setup RDS deployment that exists only on one virtual Server 2016 instance.

Additional info:

The collection was working as intended for several months but I discovered that the above error would occur for all users and devices after a reboot of the RDS server or after a restart of the remote desktop services on the RDS server.  Heeding the advice of a RDS forum I deleted the application collection and thought my troubles were behind me once remote desktop began to work again.. wrong.. As soon as a new RDS collection is created the error returns for all connections.  I initially created the collection over an RDP connection and thought that might be the cause but the issue remains even when using a vmware console while creating the collection.  

Obviously my RDP ports are open from the client computers to the RDS since RDP works after the collection is deleted -windows firewall is also off.  

Hoping someone with more expertise and experience with RDS can help here.

we've a Windows Server 2019 RDP server and have the latest updates, we're having some trouble because all the sessions disconnected unexpectly and we can see that errors in event viewer:
